----LUCA'S HAND NEVER LEFT MAGGIE'S shoulder as they settled in their seats. what he found more surprising than anything was that his own friends seemed to have history with maggie's. small world, huh? even for all their histories. sure, they may be all criminals and paths were bound to cross but all of them? what the fbi would pay for a picture of the situation that was going on right now. but when you led this kind of life you only had criminal friends. it sort of conflicted if you had civilian friends who were always asking questions. but jamie's little friend wasn't asking any questions. jamie even look irritated at everyone. "you brought her, jamie. you deal with her. tell her we locked the guns in the closet if that'd make her ease up or something. come on, everyone. let's play another round." luca was aware that he wasn't actually talking to the girl. but he didn't really care. he hadn't heard her speak more than a word since she came. if you were to ask luca if he was happy right now, he wouldn't lie. he was happy. even if he didn't show it all the time, he really appreciated the life he used to have with maggie. in the beginning of his life in the mafia, he was skeptical about having someone romantic in his life. he thought it would just be easier if it was him against the rest of the world. but after he got married to maggie did he really... need that. was the one he knew would be there when he got home, after he had a terrible day, or after doing something that makes you lose a little bit of your humanity. it was an anchor.
he leaned a little back in his seat when lore told them that he should take a picture of them to remind him that they didn't always fight. "yeah, make sure it's my good side," luca commented and squeezed maggie's shoulder. he knew they fought, maggie did too, it was when other people pointed out the couple's first major flaw showed they didn't keep the fighting behind closed doors. everyone started to settled back into chairs as maggie ordered lore to get another deck of cards. people were still making comments on conversations maggie and he must have missed when they were talking so luca took the opportunity to turn and ask her softly, "i was thinking... maybe i could stay here for the night? you know, to talk?" he didn't want wandering ears like allie or bella to hear him, it was a conversation between him and maggie and he already felt like the two would be breathing down his neck for a long time now. but luca threw in the 'to talk' as way not to sound like a douchebag. nah, he knew they would talk. then again, he shouldn't be asking to stay the night in his own house. the inferno suite he was in now was nice... but it was nothing like this.
everyone was now crowded around the table, ready to play a game that was only used to pass the time. it wasn't like it was high stakes. the dealing started and as luca was dealt his cards, he took another drink from his beer and squinted his eyes a little bit at jamie, allie, emmett, and bella. he kind of pointed at all of them, beer in hand. "so, wait. how do you all know each other?" he asked. given, he didn't know all the nitty gritty details of either jamie or emmett's lives, but he rarely heard them talk about women. he felt like they knew more about his lady problems than he did theirs.

-----------------------------------------------------------JANUARY 2012. EVENING. GIOVANNI LOFT.
----------------------------------------------------------- ,THIS WAS JUST...he didn't even know. the original plan had been a casual boy's night, a day off from the fucked-up lives they all lead. you know, cigars, beer, poker, crude sex talk. he had expected it to follow the stereotype perfectly. he wanted it to. something easy, something he didn't have to think about. but when does that ever happen? he, jamie, should have learned long ago that nothing was easy. stereotypical. expected. boring. boys night is a nice thought; just not when rivaling criminals were involved. he needed russian friends. but when maggie and her lovely band of sluts decided to ring into the situation, he was looking for a window to crawl through. maggie giovanni was about as peaceful as luca had always described her. allegra - she was hotter when she kept her mouth shut. and bella rovens didn't deserve a second thought. add carly to the situation, and what do you have? a circus that he really didn't want to be a part of.
the chain-smoking and beer and poker and dark humor helped. sort of. the thing about this brand of criminal...none of them had emotions. not really. they were barbed wire wrapped in black velvet, always on the defence. it made things bearable, to be around people like him. even if they made him want to crash his car into a stiff cement wall. it was a comfortable change. he just didn't count on anyone actually getting along. the hopes of another legendary maggie-luca fight were dim hopes of escaping. was that a bad thought? probably. but it was true. deep down, all jamie really wanted to do was get drunk by himself and sit at his own bar. but that's not a good thought. fuck. reluctantly leaning back into his chair, the ash still smoking on the end of his endless string of cigarettes, jamie watched. just watched. he had long stopped following the endless conversations. this couldn't actually be real. just...do it. he could do that. part of him was amused, almost happy he hadn't darted for the door. yes, he wanted to be in alcohol-induced oblivion with only himself as company...but it was oddly comforting. to be around people like him, remember?
"you're telling me you aren't carrying then, luc?" an uneasy smirk crossing his features, jamie watched as luca shuffled and dealt the cards. couldn't they be playing hearts or something he wasn't so fucking bad at? still, he picked up the cards and studied the shitton hand he'd been given. thanks. arching an eyebrow, jamie only half listened as he spoke to maggie again, the irritating voice of love setting in around him. that was what he never understood about the italians - all the affection and love and never quitting on each other. how could the same level of crime function on such a different level? russian internal affairs were worse than the external work. it was almost as lovely as listening to this. but he paid his attention to the giovanni lovebirds. it was easier than listening to whatever allie and bella were getting up to. it was a really bad idea to bring carly into this. especially with the trio of hoodoos hanging around. she seriously didn't need to bond with them.
he was still studying his cards when he heard someone speak again. who? i don't know. he'd long stopped paying attention. arching an eyebrow again, jamie looked up to see luca pointing at him with a beer bottle. so, he'd invited people over and had no idea how they were aquainted. nice work. "you don't pay attention, do you? i know the good doctors through you." there was no other way a russian like moody james here could know someone without getting shot in the head. the rumors of his dirty alliance with luca were bad; kind of liking the other italians? great idea. "and bells here is just a little sweep of dirt from my past. i would have rathered never seeing her again, but what can you do?" he was looking at his cards again, refusing to look at carly. she wasn't giving him daggers as often anymore. so she was making friends, that's good. he'd rather not have this conversation. see? when he didn't know what the fuck was happening, he was happier. SOME SAY YOU'RE TROUBLE BOY, JUST BECAUSE YOU LIKE TO DESTROY ALL THE THINGS THAT BRING AN IDIOT JOY SO WHAT'S WRONG WITH A LITTLE DESTRUCTION. . . . . . . LORENZO PURSED HIS lips, trying to refrain from laughter, but so obviously failing as he chuckled a little, “Please Emmett, like you can handle all of this,” He motioned all over the general area of his body. Lorenzo couldn’t help but to enjoy this light, airy feeling of the room. It also helped that Maggie and Luca weren’t trying to claw each other’s throats at the moment. This is what bliss must feel like, minus the gambling and the big elephant that was the likelihood that every single person here was armed and very dangerous. “Keep my sister happy, Luca... I know where you work and live.” He pointed, a serious look on his face before breaking character. The moment after he said those menacing words, Lore ran towards the cabinet, grabbing the cards and running back to the table, a new game, and a new chance to win, “All right you nasty criminals... and Carly, high stakes, anything goes, may the odds be ever in your favour....” Lorenzo announced, placing his dog on the floor, his eyes following Kitty until he curled up on the sofa where Lorenzo was. With a big grin on his lips, he unfolded the box of cards. His fingers glided over the crisp new cards, the waxy coating slipping under his fingerprints. As the rest of the group began to talk again, he kept looking at the new cards, his thoughts jumping like impulses in his mind. Flashbacks from the last collecting he performed played in his head, it was surreal. Normally, the cartoonist was happy go lucky, charming even... But it alarmed him when he had to go collect for his family. However, it was Bella’s voice that brought him back to reality, and he smiled slightly looking at the wild Brazilian, “Haha, I’ve seen that suitor of yours, doesn’t know the meaning of hygiene... or ‘that’s enough grease in your hair...’ Leave it to you to get betrothed to scum.” Lorenzo shook his head, shuffling the cards faster than any blackjack dealer around. It was also partly because of his childhood memories with his father, shuffling and dealing for his friends at the end of the day.
“Some collect cars, others buildings, I’ll start to collect humans, how about that?” Allegra glanced up at Emmett, subtly cocking her head to the side. She narrowed her eyes, not in a suspicious manner, just out of shock. Allie didn’t know how to feel, it was odd, inexplicable... this warm feeling in the pit of her stomach resurfaced like the time where they worked together in the emergency room, leaving their argument in the middle and helped a patient. She didn’t understand it, she only had the physical symptoms to go by, this warmth she felt when they would rarely agree. Clearing her throat, she went back to her paperwork, pursing her lips to the side, attempting to get rid of this unsettling feeling, “She should be lucky I didn’t do to her what I do to people in the family business. Just roughed her up a little...” Allegra mumbled a little, shuffling the files back into her leather purse. Sighing a little, allegra shuffled towards the table, sitting across from her work colleague, crossing her legs and stretching her arms slightly. She could sense the adrenaline beginning to course in veins. Competition was never healthy for her, she had a habit of getting way too into it. Slamming her hands on the surface of the table, Allegra raised her brows. She slapped down a few hundred dollar bills in the center of the group, “Shut up and deal, Gio.” She glanced at her cards, looking around the room, a dead look on her face. She was pretty competitive, and it helped that she could contain herself, much to her dismay as she looked around the room. “Come on people, let’s slap down some pocket change, make this game worth while.” She smirked, running a hand through her blonde waves.

VALKYRIE, CALIFORNIA, GIOVANNI LOFT, EVENING, JANUARY 2012 -----this certainly wasn't something you'd see every day. an a-list celebrity sitting down and playing cards with an assortment of valkyrie's baddies. funniest part was that carly was slowly getting used to these people and their...quirks. they threatened one another like compliments. they talked about the past in both conquests and whatnot like it was just some fond memory. in a twisted way it was kind of cool. this coming from the girl who had been shaking in fear some few minutes ago. call it desensitizing or whatnot but she was getting to the point where she could be more comfortable around strangers. she could certainly do so with alcohol in her system and a beer was certainly helping her get there. she looked around as people started getting back into the original game, the one that had begun before the other women in the room had entered the loft. hmm, playing cards with card carrying criminals...it certainly wasn't something a normal person did every day.
she sat down at the table, thankful she had a few hundred with her. "why the hell not right?"
she offered as she settled into her seat beside...which one was it? lorenzo right? she threw her money on top of allie's and grabbed her beer again, reducing it's volume by a third. this was going to be interesting and carly would rather be at least buzzed by the time something happened or by the time people started losing their hands. she looked over her shoulder to jamie, her eyes locking on his as she made a little gesture with her head. a silent 'get your butt over here and play' kinda motion. -------------------------------------------------------- -----despite letting go and letting herself be happy, maggie was still on guard. she may have hid it so well that no one noticed but she was still there just waiting for the ball to drop. it was so easy to just assume that luca meant every word he'd said and that he did indeed want her forgiveness and for everything to go back to the way it was, but maggie still knew next to nothing about his time in boston and the fact that he'd yet to spill really anything about his trip unnerved her. she didn't want to believe that he wished to do her harm by severing all her nerves and all her trust in him, but after so long and just having nothing in her life and everything being so completely, utterly bad it was easy to assume that something else was bound to happen. hopefully it happened later. much later. maggie wanted to just enjoy this and to feel at home again. she liked having that genuine, good-hearted smile back on her face and she liked feeling on top of the world again. it was something she wanted to feel for years to come. -----she watched the back and forth banter between the boys and laughed. honestly maggie knew next to nothing about emmett. she knew that he was the bane of allie's existence which meant that he got under her skin which, let's face it, no one else had ever managed. it was interesting to see what would happen there. she looked over at lore as he spoke to luca, her face lighting up as he referred to her as his sister. and rightly so. lorenzo was the closest thing maggie'd had to a brother since j.r. gave up on everything family related and beat feet out of valkyrie. it was nice to see that she still had people to rely on, people she held so dear. she winked at him as he spoke, looking over at luca with a smirk. "you know he'll back it up too." she said with a smile. the talk at the table then turned to the cards exactly as maggie had wanted it to. "hell yeah." she said as she reached into her pocket and dug out some change, which in the case of criminals was a tasty roll of hundreds, "lay 'em down bitches." she said as she eyed everyone with a mock serious look. -------------------------------------------------------- status • finished words • 782. tagged • lainey, asia, gurms, becs ! clothes • carly & maggie ! notes • --.
