men who were easy. they had been like it all her life. ever since she’d hit puberty all she’d had to do was bat her lashes at a boy and suddenly they’d be as malleable as clay. it was rare for her to find a male who wasn’t willing to do anything for her as long as she slept with him. kay had always looked down on men who were so easily swayed by a woman’s charms. usually, they could not be trusted because their head was easily turned by any beautiful woman who walked by. all of this did not matter though, because she was an independent woman who did not need men. still, she had to admit, they did have their uses. she batted her lashes at the bartender who instantly ignored another customer and rushed over to take her order. he winked at her as he mixed her drink order. kay turned to look around the dark club and smiled. the attention wasn’t that bad either. in fact after a hard day she actually welcomed it. her smile faded into a frown. over the past month work had been getting harder and harder. it had been strange because it wasn’t the assignments that had been getting harder, it had been jamie. jamie collins was her cousin, bravata partner and trainer. he was also her close confidante but for some reason lately he had been…different. whereas before he had been cold and in control, kay had recently noticed that he was more likely to lose his patience and become frustrated when on a job. a hand nudged her shoulder and she turned to see that her drink had been placed in front of her. she smiled her thanks and paid the bartender before picking it up and slowly sipping her russian cocktail. jamie was beginning to worry about her and kay didn’t worry about anyone unless they were really going off the rails. her frown trembled. she wasn’t used to being close to anyone and it was scaring her how close she had come to jamie. usually she would have held him at arm length but jamie had been the only person to actually comfort her – in his own way of course – when she had been forced to join the bravata. her eyes narrowed slightly. that had been a rough time for her, especially when she had been introduced to her future career as a contract killer and body guard for the russian bravata. mentally she shook off the memories. she didn’t want to think about the past tonight. all she wanted to do was let loose and have some fun, preferably with a handsome guy who could show her a good time. kay brushed a lock of blonde hair from her face and surveyed the people crowding around the bar trying to get the bartender’s attention. many of the men were quite cute, though none of them seemed to be very bright. kay turned back to the wall behind the bar covered with shelves of alcohol. slowly she sipped the cold liquor. the vodka burned her throat but she ignored it. her face remained indifferent as she took another sip. kay swiveled slightly on the stool she was sitting on so that she could watch passersby as people either moved towards the bar for a drink or towards the dance floor where most of them grabbed a partner and proceeded to shake it up. indie music blared from hidden speakers around the darkened room. nonsense wasn’t exactly kay’s scene but at least it was better than the more popular clubs. even back in russia she had hated them. there had never been any room to stand and it had seemed like every time she tried to move from the dance floor to the bar or vice versa she was the property of any man in arm’s reach. it was the only thing that could explain the constant butt slaps and the arms trying to wrap themselves around her waist. she suppressed a shudder of repulsion. she was all for a man in control but as soon as they got some sort of leery grin on their face she instantly wanted to pull a knife on them. at least then she would be able to wipe that look off their face. with one hand still gripping the stem of her martini glass, her hand brushed against her where a silver handled knife was hidden. since becoming a member of the bravata, she had taken to carrying some sort of weapon on her at all times. there had been several situations when that weapon had saved her life so she ignored any lingering thoughts that told her she was crazy. kay sipped her drink again though this time it was with an uncomfortable set to her shoulders. over the past three minutes or so, she had begun to feel as if someone was watching her and it was making her uncomfortable. though she was used to male attention, and hated to admit she liked it, intense staring discomforted and irritated her. a frown turned her mouth downwards as she tried to ignore the feeling but she couldn’t. kay sighed quietly, picked up her purse and drink and slipped from her chair. she wasn’t going to sit at the bar like a wall flower trying to ignore some perve’s stare. she also refused to turn around and give that perve a death stare. she wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. kay took one last sip from her drink, placed it on the counter and turned on her heel. she wanted to go and dance with someone not sit at the bar looking lonely. kay had barely taken a step towards the dance floor when someone wrapped a strong arm around her waist and pulled her towards them. |
