"i never told you you had to. he's just a friend, rock." rocco folded his arms across his chest. "i didn't like him at the fish fry, i'm not going to like him now." violet put her gloss in her purse and stood up. "got your stuff? time to drop you off with luca." rocco grabbed his backpack. "i don't know why i can't just stay home alone." rocco was ten, but there was a difference between staying home alone when she ran down the street to get some groceries in the afternoon, than staying home alone at night. "you loved hanging out with luca before he had to leave," she told him as she started to turn off all the lights in the apartment. they headed towards the door and rocco said, "but why doesn't he still live with aunt maggie?" violet, at twenty five, was just as confused as her ten year old son. violet turned around and locked the door before heading out down the hall to the elevator. "i have no idea, rock. that's a question you should ask luca." yeah, time to put him on the spot. maybe rocco could get some answers to questions everyone in the family had. violet's apartment complex was pretty much downtown, and lucky for them, so was the inferno. though months now have passed since the earthquake, sometimes it was still hard to navigate around the city. tonight though, it didn't take as long and her and rocco were in the inferno within fifteen minutes of leaving their apartment. violet knew which room luca was in, though he was using one of his aliases. the two got into the elevator and rode it all the way to luca's room on the thirtieth floor. they walked down the hallway and violet stopped in front of the room luca told her was his. "i think this is it." luca opened the door before they even had to knock. "luca!" rocco yelled and threw his arms around luca's waist. "how is my godson?" luca asked and shook his hand in rocco's hair. "we got so much to talk about." rocco told him and slipped behind luca and into the room. "bye mom, love you." luca watched his run into the room and looked back at violet. "talk? sure is a step up from coloring and playing g.i. joes." violet shook her head. "you have no idea. just remember, he's ten, not five. and no, strip joints are not next on the list from night clubs. yes, that came out," violet told him. she did hear from rocco probably two years ago that before maggie and luca became... maggie and luca, luca had to retrieve maggie at the bare night club, bringing rocco with him. violet had come that very next day to pick rocco up. maggie had been there, in luca's shirt. it was sketch, but it didn't make sense up until two years ago. "and here i was going to give him his first lap dance on me," luca jokingly said to her. "are you sure you don't want to come in for a minute." violet looked down at her watch. "sorry i can't. i'm probably already late. thanks, luca. you have no idea how much this means to him." violet rushed back down the hotel elevator and out the lobby, she didn't really realize that she was running a tad late. could she blame it on being a girl? sounded pretty plausible. she was going on a date with this man named jake. she actually met him when she was at the fish fry with rocco and gale. he had been volunteering at one of the games. they sort of hit it off. he was charming and funny, and he was really good-looking. he asked her out, and she said yes. apparently rocco did not approve, but rocco tended not to approve of pretty much anyone. the only men rocco let in was luca and gale. violet parked in a parking lot and walked across the street to bare, where jake was standing outside. "i'm sorry i'm so late. i had to drop rocco off with his uncle." jake smiled and hugged her, slightly kissing her on the cheek. violet couldn't help but smile. "trust me, you didn't miss anything." he led her pass the bouncer, who barely even looked at them. violet would admit, she wasn't a big partier. she never really had been, because she had been a mom for the past ten years, so she really didn't get into all of that. but, she agreed to meet at bare because, she never had a first date there, and she wanted to give it a try. try something new. yeah, she was at that point in her life right now. "oh hey, we should dance!" before violet could really give jake a response, he grabbed her hand and pulled her into the mass of the crowd. for a glimmer, she actually felt like the nineteen year old she was supposed to be growing up. not constantly looking over her shoulder in fear connor was there with a gun. it was a few songs they danced and they laughed, and violet was having fun, which she wasn't quite expecting. near the end of a song, jake leaned in towards her ear and spoke loud enough for her to hear over the music. "i'm going to get us some drinks." violet nodded, letting him know she understood what he said. he took off and after the song ended, she followed him too. right as she met him at the bar, he took the two drinks off the bar and handed her one. she wasn't quite sure what it was, she really only knew wine, and this was not wine. she sipped it anyway, it tasted fruity, so she liked it. they both sat down on the bar stools and violet sipped her drink. "so maybe next time, we can do something with rocco?" violet nodded, "i'm sure rock would love that," when it came to the beginnings of the dating world. it was like half of them mentioned rocco, and half of them not. violet always mentioned she had a son, because she wasn't ashamed of it, and it they didn't dig that, then she didn't dig them, simple as that. she wasn't going to get into a relationship with someone that wasn't feeling the fact that she had a ten year old. jake started asking her questions about what she did for a living and violet told him that she owned an art gallery on main street. they talked about valkyrie, and how long they had been living in it, among other get to know you conversation starters. about the time when violet was mentioning she graduated from vu a couple years ago, she felt immensely different. it was hard to explain. one minute, she was fine, the next, she felt kind of sick to her stomach, like she had one too many. but she had only just finished her first drink ten minutes before. coming from an italian, you don't get drunk after one drink. the giovannis were the type to break out the wine when company came over to each other's homes. though violet wasn't a big drinker, she could have two glasses of wine, and feel a-ok. one drink like this, no way. "i have to go to the ladies room," she announced and stood up, grabbing her purse. "are you ok?" jake asked and touched her shoulder. "i'm fine. just need to go to the bathroom, you know..." violet abruptly turned around and started heading into the direction she believed she had seen the bathrooms. as she staggered her way towards the bathroom, she squinted her eyes, a headache was on the brink of exploding into her brain. what the hell? the glowing lights blended in around her as she tried to find the door. opening the bathroom, she walked slowly towards the sink. there were girls in there, chatting, reapplying makeup, and using the toilets, but none of it really registered to her. she placed both of her palms around the sides of the sink and looked at herself in the mirror. she was sweating, but she wasn't hot or sick. then through the mush in her brain, she wondered if something was put in her drink. she opened up her clutch and dug in it for her cell. once she got it, she opened up her contacts. her initial thought was call luca, but as she scrolled down to the 'ls' she ran into the 'gs' first. gale's name was highlighted and violet pressed call. it rang a couple times before she heard his voice in the other end. "gale," she said clearing her throat. "i think something is wrong with me. i think i was drugged or... something... i'm in the bathroom of bare. can you please come and get me? i don't want to walk out alone... he's still out there." she clutched the phone to her ear as she backed herself up against the wall and waited. |
