- - - - - - - ---SHE WAS HARDLY PAYING ATTENTION TO WHERE SHE WAS, or where she was going. her slender fingers were balled up, tightly jammed into her coat pockets as she strolled along the less than empty sidewalk. angry mothers tugged their kids around her, business men chatting the day away with their blutooth scowled. she didn't notice though, she was deep in thought. her eyes wandered, touching on a passerby's face before moving on to the next person. her eyebrows were knit together and she was frowning. she couldn't come up with a good enough reason why she had come to this little west coast town. why was she here in valkyrie? it was pathetic, the entire situation. everything had made perfect sense in her head when she had boarded her plane in boston. it had been crystal clear... but now, now it wasn't so clear anymore. there was some sort of haze over her mind, something that was hiding the linking mechanism she had used to justify her little trip. wherever that link went, it was gone now. nothing made any sense anymore, and it was frustrating her. part of her wanted to grab remy and leave. they belonged in boston. it was where they'd grown up, they loved it there, and they were welcome there. she should have stayed home. it wasn't too late. she could up and leave before anybody knew she had gotten into valkyrie, she could be out of there by nightfall. it was seeming more and more appealing. the only problem was she didn't like regretting anything, and what if she ended up regretting leaving? it would have made the entire journey a waste of time. if anything she should enjoy herself. she was here with her best friend. the beaches were warm. they had a nice hotel. the men were... well, that didn't matter yet.
that was why she was here though, wasn't it? she refused to admit it out loud, but it was the only possible explanation. remy knew it. her father knew it. she knew it. that didn't mean they had to talk about it though. she was in valkyrie, california for the men. or more appropriately, the man. a man. it was stupid, and girly, and she absolutely loathed herself for it. but, she couldn't help it, and when she'd gotten her best friend to come along with her, then it was settled.she couldn't handle the shady secrets, it had been driving her up the wall for months. none of it made sense. sure, there was the fact that he had family in valkyrie, and the earth quake happened, and of course he'd have wanted to come see if they were okay. the problem was that he didn't say goodbye. he never said anything. venny had begun to consider luca giovanni a part of her family, and a good friend. he was witty, though brooding, and quite easy to talk to. quite frankly, she liked him. even after the hit had been removed from his head she was sure he'd go home, but he didn't. he stayed there. could you really blame a girl for having mixed feelings? she got her hopes up without even knowing it, but then he'd disappeared. venecia had not even been informed of his departure until she got curious and had asked where the hell he was. friends told each other when they moved back across the country, usually, so that left them... where? she had no idea, and it was giving her an intense migraine.
hope was a vile thing. it was a spawn of the devil, slithering its way into the hearts of the unsuspecting only to tighten its hold on them until it stopped beating. hope was something that could shatter somebody, and that was why venny never really liked the whole idea of "hope." she didn't need hope, she was stronger than it. unfortunately, even after luca had blatantly rejected her the one night she tried to put herself out there, she still had a little bit of hope left. she knew it was childish and naive. she wished she could cut it completely out of her life, but that wasn't going to happen. she wanted to get the situation over with, and for that she needed answers, which was how she came to be on the picturesque oceanside town. she'd been here for a while though, and still hadn't gone to see luca. a part of her knew this wasn't going to end well for her, there was simply that instinctive feeling that she couldn't swallow back. it scared her, the very idea of it intimidated her. venny had never been the steady relationship type of girl. she had never really had feelings for anybody. she loved her family and her friends, but anything more wasn't something she was very familiar with. she was the cool laid back girl that all the guy's liked because she was relaxed and amiable. she liked to watch the game and drink a beer. she wasn't the crazy girlfriend or the stalker chick. oh god, was she? by being in valkyrie... did that make her the psychotic stalker girl that guys told their friends about? see. this was precisely whys he didn't do relationships. they never worked out well for her and she usually ended up making a fool of herself. she liked flings. flings were good. they were simple, detached. relationships were like chaining a thousand pound anchor to your foot and throwing yourself into the pacific ocean.
so why was she bothering?
this was so incredibly confusing. biting her lip, her dark eyes focused in on the starbucks she was approaching. what the hell. she walked in, surprised by how busy it was. this was good, a distraction. she needed a distraction. coffee wasn't really her favorite thing, but the smell was purely intoxicating at the moment. she could barely keep herself away. pulling out some cash, she overlooked the menu, but couldn't seem to decide what she wanted. a young girl in front of her, probably in high school, seemed all too comfortable with the place. she was smiling and bubbly, and the cashier greeted her by name. she ordered something complex, but it sounded really good. as soon as the girl moved off to the side, venny smiled sheepishly at the cashier, "um, could i just get what she did?" she gestured towards the girl. he laughed and nodded, taking the order down again as she paid. she proceeded to move behind the girl again, waiting for her drink to be finished. the dimly lit room bubbled with quiet chatter. some mellow music played in the background. being inside starbucks was like... well, it was like being at a spa or something. there was one on practically every corner in every city. in airports they were basically every other store. "miss?" a girl interrupted her thought process, nodding towards her drink. venecia smiled and grabbed it, comforted by the warmth it gave her fingers. she looked around for an empty seat but couldn't seem to find one. outside there were some tables to sit at, and the weather was nice, so she figured it would be preferable anyways.
the sidewalk was still busy, people going to and from work, cars passing by. she liked the noise, it reminded her of home. with all her brothers and her one precious little sister, her house had never been quiet growing up. there was always a fight going on, or a joke being told, or a game being played. it was loud, and she loved it. it reminded her of the warmth of her home. she couldn't help but smile to herself, thinking about her siblings. poor mona, she had never been the only girl. she was probably dying something miserable without venny their to clean up after the boys when they made a mess in the bathroom. or johnny, she definitely missed his witty humor, though she was still a little grossed out to know he slept with her best friend. if it had been anybody but remy she would have been furious, but well, she should have seen it coming. it was bound to happen eventually, a good looking girl like that, and a handsome guy like her brother. her mind wandered to boston, to her obnoxiously loud home filled with the aroma of italian cooking. her mom always calling out in her native tongue, her dad helping her cook. she missed it terribly. maybe she should just go home, get up and leave right this second. she was accepted there, and you know what? luca giovanni wasn't the best damn guy she'd ever met. he was her friend. her friend she had a stupid crush on. there were other people out there. she should just... she should just go home. it was final, she was going to leave. the young woman pulled out her phone, dialing in remy's number and hitting call. on the second ring, however, her mouth fell open, her coffee halfway to her lips in her other hand.
my life is god's joke, she thought frantically, her eyes practically popping out of her head as she clicked the end button and shoved her phone back into her pocket. "luca?" she said out loud in disbelief, automatically standing up from her chair. normally she would have smiled, but she was astounded and embarrassed, and she could feel her face growing hot. she wasn't sure what else to say as she watched him approaching. she took in his appearance. he looked good, happy even. clean cut as always. and what was that on his hand? ...a ring? a god damn wedding ring. what the hell. it must be something else, right? she ignored it. if he was married she'd have known. husbands raved about their wives when they'd been separated for so long, and luca had never mentioned a significant other. he never mentioned much really. it was something else. yeah. she grinned at him finally, shaking off her shock, "oh my god, hi!" she finally said. well this was awkward. just as she had made up her mind to forget about him, up he walked. this had to be some sort of joke. punk'd t.v. was waiting around the corner. they were going to pop out at any moment and show her surprised face to the nation. that seemed to be the only plausible explanation. that, or this was a seriously stupid coincidence. and then her mind began to doubt her previous consolations. uh, what if that was a real wedding ring? it would explain is abrupt absence. why he didn't... kiss her that night. oh my god. she couldn't help it, she found herself staring at the ring, the fading smile on her lips.

--- LUCA WAS RIDING HIGH. he moved out of the inferno, and was back into the loft. he was home. finally. now, maggie was pregnant, they were happy again, like, really happy. for the first time in four and a half years, he was in a good place. luca was still in shock that maggie was pregnant. he didn't understand how... well, he knew how, but it was just so sudden. he just wasn't expecting her to get pregnant so soon? and if they were being honest, it was an awkward time to start a family since they were having marital problems, but at the same time, it sort of... helped them in a way. everything now, was instantly better. that could come back around and biting both of them in the ass, but it was whatever right now. all he knew was that every morning he was waking up next to his wife.
he had been working since he got back to valkyrie in january, but now getting up in the morning was a burden to go to work. waking up in an empty hotel room was one thing. it was easy to leave, but now, it was especially hard. he just sucked it up, kissed his pregnant wife goodbye and went to work. neither of them had a conventional lifestyle. they didn't have a nine to five type of job. maggie would go work to at the m lounge and luca did his business downtown in the back rooms of the italian eatery. luca still wasn't all too keen on maggie working as much as she was going to. one kid was one thing, twins was another. it was more stressful, more prone to complications. luca wasn't going to press his luck when talking to her about it. maybe he'd wait to bring it up until she couldn't see her toes anymore. yeah, he'd do that.
besides maggie, and their unborn kids, one thing luca really loved was his job. he loved working for his family, no matter how many illegal things they did. luca was the head of the illegal gambling ring the giovannis had. from card games to horse races, luca dealt with it all. the staff that worked under him dealing with the bets and the money collection, and luca made the final says, dealt with small situations that turned into big situations, and organizing gambling nights. it was a long way from when he was a collector. it was funny almost. he wouldn't have met maggie quite like he did if he wasn't in charge of this branch like he was today. luca didn't collect money anymore. he had people that did that. he was curious to see what would have happened if maggie and he didn't meet under the circumstances that they did. would they have liked each other if fausto and juan sr. just threw them together? no, they probably still would have hated each other. luca wasn't ready to settle down with a girlfriend let alone a wife. oh, how things have changed since then.
luca had been looking over the books all morning in one of the back rooms of the italian restaurant that giovannis owned. they did have a bookie that did this stuff, but luca liked to look over it too. kind of like a crossing your t's and dotting your i's sort of thing. after a few hours, he needed to stretch his legs out. he got up, and walked through the restaurant's dining room as he made his way to the restaurant's front entrance. the place wasn't as busy as it could be, it wasn't quite the lunch rush yes, but when people saw him walking through, they knew. all the rumors they knew, and they still came to the restaurant. even though everything that surrounded the giovannis was "allegedly" some people just knew. right as luca was stepping out of the restaurant, his phone was ringing. he pulled it out and saw that it was one of his collectors. "yes?" he spoke. "so.. we might have a problem...?" luca stopped momentarily and sighed into the phone. he hated problems. "what is it?" the phone was silent for a few second before the collector named ricky spoke again, "i need to collect five grand from someone and they want an extension. and you see, boss, i've already given him one last week." oh, luca remembered those days. "break his kneecaps," luca said simply and kept walking. "that's the thing, boss... he's in a wheelchair... and you know i-i-i just don't know if i can hurt a cripple." luca laughed dryly. well, this was something new. he started heading towards the starbucks to get a coffee, it was only a few stores down from the restaurant. "ok, well, let's see how well he can function without a few fingers." luca could hear ricky sucked in a deep breath over the line. luca shook his head as he grabbed the door to starbucks and swung it open. then, he heard someone yell his name. when he looked back up he stopped. through the crowd of people he saw someone he never thought he'd see again. venny moretti. the infamous girl from boston that was the reason maggie and luca got into such a big fight. he couldn't even avoid this; she was looking right at him.
over the line he was hearing ricky say something along the lines of 'boss, i can't hurt a cripple.' but luca cut him off quickly. "look ricky, i don't care if you have to push him down a goddamn flight of stairs or saw his goddamn legs off, i want my fucking money by the end of the day, so do something about it. i got to go, bye." he disconnected the phone and pushed it back into his pocket right as venny stood up from her chair. "oh my god, hi!" "venny, hey!" he said in disbelief. what the hell? "what are you doing here?" he asked her. he was aware that she was looking at his left hand, at his ring. yeah, well this awkward. not only did he leave boston without saying goodbye, he was married. something he had never told her.

- - - - - - - ---AWKWARD MOMENTS. they were something that gave life a little charm. it was what gave people stories to tell ten years later over a thanksgiving feast and have a nice laugh over. sometimes they were even hilarious when in the moment. venny wasn't opposed to them. in fact, she loved awkward experiences. she and her best friend remy had often gone out of their way to make people feel uncomfortable or to give birth to an awkward silence. she was the type of person who lived for little moments like that, the types of memories that would bubble up in her brain as she was standing in a crowded elevator and would just laugh out of the blue while people stared at her like she was crazy. life was like a meatball, but awkward moments were the herbs and spices that gave it the entire razzmatazz flavor. even that metaphor, if said anywhere but the inside of her head, would probably make people stare at her like she was a little off key and then start laughing. she was the type of person who could embrace it rather than be embarrassed by it. that and her best friend was as crazy, while being mentally healthy, as they came. it was bound to happen, and it was bound to happen quite often. but this sort of situation she found herself in right now... with luca. she wasn't sure what to make of it. this was so stupidly coincidental that it seemed to fly off the awkward scale into a whole other ball park. seriously? did she do something in the last week to offend god? because she was sorry. she'd go to confession or whatever she needed to do to make this go away. if he could zap her out of here with his lightning shooting fingers, she would be ecstatic. she'd help her mom do dishes next christmas, which was a serious sacrifice if one knew how big venecia moretti's family was. she would give an orphan a hundred dollars. whatever, she would work hard labor in northern siberia with no clothes on in the winter if that’s what she needed to do. just, lord almighty; get her out of this situation.
maybe one day she would look back and laugh at this. maybe she and luca would end up being good ole pals and poke fun at the time when she had a childish little crush on him. his wife would turn out to be this extraordinarily kind person, the type of person you couldn't hate no matter what, and she would laugh too. venny would have her own guy, somebody way better looking than luca she hoped for consolation's sake, and they would all just laugh it off. hah. yes, that seemed very likely. this would probably end with venny red as a ripe tomato, uncomfortably finding an excuse to leave, going home and calling her mom, and watching old movies and eating ice cream with her best friend who was going to attempt to make her feel better with sexual jokes. then she would grow old and alone with a lot of cats. ew, wait, no cats. maybe a dog or two. it didn't seem like remy would settle down either. maybe they'd both end up old and alone, in which case they could just move in together and then children would be extra scared of them on halloween because it would be two crazy old women yelling at them to not run on the grass. they'd probably eat all the candy themselves, actually. remy would be some old cougar, venny would make sure they were of legal age, and that was how they would spend the rest of their lives. it seemed plausible, likely even. venny wasn't opposed to it. she had never considered herself the settle-down type either, why start now? maybe she would end up in jail or something, or a corrupt detective. she could go to italy. become successful and rich, have men begging to sleep with her but she'll turn them all down. hah, now she was getting ahead of herself.
venecia loved the people in her life, however dysfunctional or demented they may be. remy had been her best friend since they were little kids. they were the type of girls who weren't whiney and didn't ignore each other for their boyfriends. venny couldn't even think of a single serious fight they had. or even a mildly serious one. then there was mona, venny's little sister. mona was a girlier version of venny. she was high maintenance but a sweetheart. venny adored her. then there was all her brothers, who venny had always been close to. she loved them all with her entire heart. she loved that her family was able to get better after one of her brother's died. it still hurt to think about it, but it didn't hinder her anymore. he was still with them, and she knew that. her parents, lastly, were the best parents a person could have asked for. they would have done anything for any of their children. they were wild and friendly, and when they fought they yelled at each other in italian, then would stop and stare at each other before bursting out in laughter. they had a million quirks that made venny loved them even more. she knew a lot of people weren't as lucky as her to have an amazing family. most people had some crappy childhood with an abusive dad or corrosive mom. she never had that though. and she wasn't really exposed to it first hand as a kid. remy's parents were good too. sure, maybe a little on the mentally insane side, but they were lovable people. and if they weren't the way they were, then remy wouldn't be the way she was, so of course they were fantastic parents. venny considered them her second family. so with so many people she loved and that loved her in her life, why on earth would she ever need anybody else? she already had more than most people ever even dreamed of.
maybe it was just the fact that it was every girl's fairytale fantasy to meet mr. right and have him sweep her off her feet. granted, it didn't usually happen that way, but some girls got lucky. it was one of those little secrets no girl wanted to admit. they didn't like finally saying out loud that they did crave that sort of affection, because they it was all the more pathetic when they didn't find it. with venny's luck, if she ever got married it would be to some abusive asshole which her older brother would end up feeling inclined to murder. that or she and remy would kill him. she could see them doing it, pulling an "earl had to die" by the dixie chicks moves. they could easily be mary ann and wanda. poison him, and throw him in a lake. that'd be a nice story to tell their family at the dinner table. she could already see her dad given them both bear hugs and telling them he was proud, or johnny giving them kisses on the cheeks and saying they'd finally received their manhood. well, he'd probably just make out with remy right there. but regardless, it would happen. mona would think they were kidding and then probably never bring any of her boyfriends home. venny's mom would roll her eyes while drinking wine and watching the food channel. she could see the entire situation in her head. even married to an alcoholic abusive asshole, it ended well for her. her life was perfect, in a way. yes, she had her issues, everybody had them. but she was, overall, happy. she liked who she was. why did she have to go out of her way to impress some guy?
half her mouth pulled up into a forced smile, uncomfortable laughter bubbling from her throat. she would throw herself into a burning volcano right now. or maybe, maybe she would get lucky and some drunk driver would pull up and run her right into the starbucks she was standing in front of. then, at least, if she lived she would have bigger problems than luca. or maybe world war three would start and valkyrie, california was where the first physical act of war would be made, or maybe hurricane katrina would take over california's shore line. anything was better than this. she didn't want to do this, she didn't want to explain this, and she didn't even want to be here! suddenly, coming to valkyrie for any reason seemed completely idiotic. that’s what she felt like, a complete idiot. luca looked like he couldn't believe she was here, and why should he? she was officially the class-a stalker girl. bravo, venecia. shall she take a bow? "luca, this is crazy," she said, the expression of her face was like somebody was torturing her but she was surprised they were doing it. god, zeus, whoever... hit her with a bolt of lightning. please, if she'd ever done anything redeemable with her life, just strike her with lightning now. she was okay with dying. he asked what she was doing here and her false grin fell, her eyes widening, "Well," she began, laughing a little to herself. i just figured you might have had a thing for me, so i came back to conquer you. haha, yes. that was good. or maybe well, i thought we were friends and you never said bye, so i came to kick your ass. hmph, that was a little better. but no, she needed a real reason, one that would make her look less crazy. "remy!" she suddenly blurted out, orchestrating her words carefully, "remy missed jamie. so did i. i mean, we're still not used to him being in boston... all the time with us, and so we got on a plane to come see him, especially with everything that happened, but you know, so we came here. because he's our best friend. and we were curious what sort of slum hole he was living in..." her words died out when she realized how much she was saying and how fast she was saying it. "we missed jamie." she concluded. it wasn't really a lie. he was one of their best friends since they were kids. she unglued her eyes from his left ring finger. she couldn't bring that up. then she would look like a psychopath. she sat back down in her share awkwardly, and maybe if she was lucky he was too busy to stay and chat and would just... leave. "so," she started, looking anywhere but his hand, "how've ya been?" she but on her best i'm trying hard not to vomit smile.

--- ONE THING HE WAS NEVER QUICK TO TALK ABOUT now that he was back, was his time spent in boston. that's where he met jamie collins. a friend, more or less, considering. but, when luca was sent there by his uncle, he set up shop in another italian mafia that was allied and old friends with fausto. he did hold a high rank like he did with the giovannis, but he was dirt in boston either. he kept quiet, head always down, and stayed by himself for the longest time. he helped with books because what luca knew was illegal gambling so that was where they stuck him. he befriended his boss' daughter. venecia, or venny who he had come to know her as. to him, she was just a friend. he would hang out with jamie, and her, and remy tremblay. they were friends, he would drink with them, but to luca, it wasn't like valkyrie. he had been in such a dark place after he was force to leave maggie that filling the void with human interaction was what he needed. venny was a friend though. he was always mysterious in the fact that he never revealed anything personal about himself or his history. so the fact that he was actually married? that never came up. he should have said something the night she tried to kiss him. he was so deep in his own hole he didn't even see that venny actually... liked him more than a friend. luca was just caught off guard, but he still never mentioned maggie. he did this only to protect his wife who was thousands of miles away from him. if he got in trouble in boston, he didn't want people to know he had a wife back in valkyrie. even when they were separated for four years, his decisions were always for her. after the almost-kiss, it wasn't long before the earthquake had happened that sent luca immediately back to valkyrie and sadly, never looking back. he did feel bad that he didn't say goodbye to her. he knew her for four years.
luca knew his wedding ring must have been sticking out like a sore thumb. it had only been now four months since the earthquake. even he could see how that probably looked ridiculous coming from someone she thought was single all these years. he didn't even mean for this to happen. he remembered when london found him engaged to maggie. that must have been even more shocking since he had just recently slept with her, and here she came to valkyrie to see him and luca was "showering" with maggie. everything back then was so crazy, but now the situation seemed oddly familiar, even if venny was only his friend. he knew she had wanted more, and that was the awkward part. looking back though, there wasn't ever a good time to reveal that luca was, in fact, married. and even then, it was just too hard for him to talk about. he was very depressed, but he just hid it from everyone very well. he didn't want to talk about maggie to someone. it was just too hard for him to even say her name out loud.
the last time that venny was mentioned prompted the marriage counseling session with dr. banks. jamie had opened his big mouth the night that luca attempted to talk to maggie by turning their loft into a boy's night. all he did was mention a girl from boston and it set maggie off like a fucking bomb. maggie didn't even know her name but she was convinced that luca must have cheated on her even though it wasn't true in the slightest. maggie screamed and kicked him out again with not so much as a goodbye. even though luca believed that maggie and he were past cheating allegations, he wasn't sure how maggie would take it if she knew that the infamous boston girl was here in valkyrie. and the fact that maggie was now pregnant would trigger a wave of hormonal outbursts, luca half thought that maybe he just wouldn't mention it to her. even though, maggie was bound to find out that she was here and even luca didn't want to be caught in that crossfire. that was another thing. not only was he in fact married, but his wife was now pregnant. this just showed how fast life can change. luca barely made any progress in the four years he was in boston, but here he was four months back in valkyrie and he had twins on the way already.
venny just bursted out with remy's name. saying she was the reason why venny was in valkyrie. that and jamie. he didn't doubt it. jamie washed up in valkyrie not long after luca did. luca had the giovannis, and jamie had the russians. valkyrie was now just a place where everyone was hanging out and starting shit. luca laughed when she said they were looking to see where he was living now. "i saw him not too long ago. he was over at my house." luca was still bitter about the last time he was with jamie. again, if it wasn't for him, maggie wouldn't of even of known about venny. not that there was anything to hide. venny sat back down at her table, he watched as she looked away from his ring again. she was sitting at a table for two and luca wasn't about to be rude. he had known her for four years. she wasn't just going to poof away in his head just like that. he had known her longer than he knew maggie, technically speaking. "how've ya been?"
ha. if she would have asked him that question a couple months ago, the answer wouldn't of been good. that was when the reconciliation between him and maggie was at it's worse. it was hard to even believe that she was secretly pregnant when they were bitching at each other. even last month when they were seeing someone about their problems his answer probably would have been frustrated. but now? he was actually really good. he was working, he was being a good husband, and he was finally living at home again. "i've been good," he answered and pulled out the chair across from hers and sat down in it. "what about you?" he asked. he was sort of aware that this felt weird. it was probably a combination of a lot of things including the elephant on his finger, the fact that he just left boston, and because she looked a little flustered. like she knew he was here but didn't think she would run into him like this. "i'll just say it," he said and lifted up his left hand. maybe just getting it out of the way would lift the tension. "i'm married. i have been since two thousand and eight. i never mentioned anything in boston because it was kind of hard for me. i had to leave her here in valkyrie when the russians ordered the hit on me." it felt like weight lifted off his chest as he told her. it wasn't that hard and maybe it would have been easier to say something in boston. venny and her father knew about the hit, but really? that was about the extent of his past that he revealed. "her name is maggie," he added even though he wasn't quite sure why. seemed more real, he supposed. "and we're expecting."

- - - - - - - ---VENECIA MORETTI WAS NOT A VINDICTIVE PERSON. she wasn't vengeful or generally angry at all. she was very cool and content through almost everything. it took a lot to upset her, to sincerely toy with how she felt. she'd always been a voice of reason, of sorts. by nature, she was very accepting, and very forgiving. she would always remember, though, and the trust of venecia was not something earned lightly. she was wary of most of the people she met, and it took a while for her to open up to them. her list of trustees was fairly short, consisting of her family and remy's family, and luca... but he'd been recently snipped off. like thirty seconds ago. venny wasn't good at handling her emotions though, because even when they were the slightest bit overwhelming, she was the one who put on her brave face and pretended like it wasn't as bad as it felt. even for her family she wouldn't show what she really felt, if it was negative. she bottled everything up until the last moment where she would have a mental breakdown and go over everything that had gone wrong recently. she couldn't ever be very open, even with remy. but it was nice, because her best friend saw right through her as through she was nothing but feelings and opinions held together by a thin layer of ceran wrap. remy knew when to talk about it, and when to keep quiet. she could see when venny was at her exploding point. at least she had one person who knew her that well. plus all her siblings. they knew venny wasn't the grudge holding type, or the vengeful one. that was probably why people figured they could mess with her and not have to worry about it later. well it wasn't like she was a push over. she would forgive people, but forgetting was something she could never do. she wasn't about to try and find a malicious way to get back at those who had wronged her, but they weren't going to be able to walk back into her life like nothing had happened either.
luca wasn't an exception.
when luca showed up on her family's doorstep, venny didn't like him. they had just lost their son and brother, and here came this new comer with baggage that nobody had the energy or heart to deal with. her father had put on his happiest face though, and welcomed luca in. her mom was glad to have somebody new to worry over. as much as she hated to admit it, it was like filling in the gap. it was nice to have the empty space at the dinner table filled. it helped them forget. luca was no replacement though, and they all knew it. venny resented the very idea, and she'd refused to be friendly at first, but when one worked every day with a person, it was hard to keep up that charade. she spent all her time with either remy or luca when she was outside of classes. he was part of the family. he was there for five years, listening to her stories, her complaints, her amusements. he knew everything about her life, from her best friends to her experiences at boston university. the only thing she really hadn't shared with him was her feelings about her late brother. she didn't mention him once, because even now the wound was still there. she'd spent so much time making sure she was cleaning out the bloody infection from the rest of her family that she'd forgotten to tend her own. she had remy though, and remy had lost her brother too. remy had always been her confidant. at least, on a bright side, she could be grateful it was luca who was leading a double life and not her eccentric best friend. it was a good thing this wasn't a movie, because if it were she would have probably lost everybody. she was okay now, though. this wasn't such a big deal. but it hurt; she couldn't deny that it hurt. she'd considered luca one of her very best friends until he up and disappeared. sure, he left just after the awkward moment when he'd rejected her kiss. that was somewhat embarrassing, but venny had never dreamed that this was the reason.
and so yes, he was cut off from her trust. she would forgive him, in time, but right now she felt like the biggest idiot in the world, and like the human population as a whole could see it all tattooed onto her forehead. she would hide it away though; swallow the betrayal so it wouldn't arise until later. on the brighter side, with luca out of the picture, her dreams of marrying a famous quarterback were still in the running. it wouldn't have worked out anyway, she knew that. venny had always had a problem committing to people. especially romantically. any guy who had ever been interested in her as more than a fling or friends with make-out privileges, she pushed them away. she couldn't give herself up to somebody else; she probably never would be able to do so. she couldn't explain it either, because it wasn't like it was hard to walk away. once things seemed to be getting serious, she would simply lose all interest and attraction, turning to walk in the other direction and never looking back. she never regretted it, either. maybe that was why this situation with luca was making her so distraught. this was the first time she'd ever really been rejected, because usually it was a mutual decision, or she was the one walking away. not now, though. now it was somebody whom she was not only physically attracted to, but somebody she'd considered her good friend for the past five years. the girl he was married to must be amazing, gorgeous, completely intoxicating. she'd minored in psychology, and all that stuff about "distance making the heart fonder" was complete bull, as studies had clearly proved. to love somebody that much that he still cared about her after five years of absolutely no contact? it had to be something infectious, something nobody could walk away from. it was an epiphany, although it was obvious, that she'd never even had a chance with him. it wasn't that she was defective, but he loved somebody else. he loved whoever this mrs. giovanni was first. she'd never even been a competitor.
that made it easier, at least. because it would have been significantly worse to her pride if he had been completely single and still had zero interest. then it would prove that she just wasn't appealing. at least here she knew he had some bond with another woman that was significantly stronger than whatever he felt for her. but that didn't change that fact that he had kept it from her. if remy was married and never told her, venny would probably slap her upside the head and not speak to her for a few weeks. this was more than just a crush, this was friendship.
she laughed breathlessly as he talked about jamie. her throat felt like it was clogged. she was drowning, her own body was drowning, and she couldn't stop it. her chest was tight, and she was struggling to breathe steadily. wouldn't it be a miracle if she fell over and died right now? because it seemed better. she's rather face jamie's hateful glare than have this conversation with luca. couldn't they go back to eighteenth century england where he could have written her some letter about how he was married and they would never see each other again? at least then she would suffocate in the comforts of her own home rather than outside of a starbucks on the other side of the country from where she hailed. "that's good, i've been worried about him," she managed. it was true, too. probably the most truthful thing she said so far. jamie may have been a waste of good oxygen, but she'd known him since she was a kid. she'd grown up with the guy. he could be as mad at her as he wanted, but it wouldn't change the fact that they were childhood friends. but it didn't change the fact that she felt like she was going start projectile vomiting all over the place. it felt like her stomach had dropped to her knees. she was the awkward character in the movie everybody laughed at while they cheered for the leading couple in their odyssey to find eternal joy and a happily ever after. there would be a couple of people who liked her, and rooted for her, but she was the underdog nobody could remember the name of after the movie ended. the character everybody forgot existed until she appeared on screen again, and then they impatiently waited for her to take her exit.
calm down, she told herself sharply. she needed to get a grip. she needed somebody to slap her across the face. she inhaled deeply, closing her eyes a second longer than she would have had it been a blink. it was the embarrassment that was eating her alive, the complete mortification that had painted her cheeks a light rosy color. she managed a small smile when luca said he'd been good. he seemed to really mean it, and well, at least that was nice. he'd always seemed slightly miserable in boston. it was just another confirmation that she'd never been in the running. she was starting to feel more and more pathetic. take her back to boston, or maybe give her a bat and pitch her a ball, because driving it out of the park would probably make her feel better. she felt antsy, like she needed to go on a run, but at least her lungs were cooperating more than they were previously. she wasn't breathing like she'd just run a marathon. think of all the positives. "likewise," she retorted. she'd been okay. not bad, not especially good. just normal. she'd be normal again in a few days too, given some time to recover from being made a complete fool out of. she realized that whatever hopes she had for luca were dead and gone. the sun had set on that, and that sun was never going to rise again. she would find her happiness somewhere else, something else. she could always infatuate herself with the saints. she would marry the team as a whole. luca suddenly broke her reverie with a firm statement, that he would just announce it. he confirmed it all, made it so even the slightest bit of hope left was lit on fire and nothing more than ashes, doused in water. it took a bit of effort to maintain her composure when he mentioned his wife was pregnant too. so he just came back and jumped in bed then, did he? how nice. she didn't know how to feel; mad, sad, surprised. nothing seemed to be winning over, so she settled with pretending. she put on her most winning smile, and stuck out her hand in the most natural way she could manage.
"nice to meet you, i'm venny." she had to be a big girl, because he was happy. wasn't that her eternal job, anyway? to heal everybody around her? well she could do it. she could pretend this wasn't an issue. she would grow up and put forth a new chapter of friendship, though she'd be angry, but she had to be understanding.
