It was quite beautiful in a classical sort of way, the kind that made her think of the picturesque streets of old Prague or the towering arches of Rome's churches. She had always loved the classics. Somehow they had always seemed to be perfect, a metaphor for her herself as an overachiever and perfectionist. It seemed like buildings like this were meant just for her, but then that was her selfish side talking. A brisk wind tumbled her golden hair and pushed it back in front of her face. Anna tossed them over her shoulder impatiently as she crossed the road to the pavement in front of the museum, casually dodging the cars that were slowly making their way through downtown Valkyrie. It was around twelve o'clock, an hour after the exhibition had started, and about the time she should have been in front of those jewels planning away another job.
A small frown tugged her lips as she hurried herself up the wide flight of steps to the front doors. Around her groups of locals milled about while tourists wandered around with their cameras, knee high socks and ridiculous shirts. Anna winced upon reading a few but didn't stop as she maneuvered her way through the crowd. When she reached the top of the steps she quickly fished into her back to get her wallet out. She didn't notice the man who walked by smiling slightly as he swept his eyes up and down, nor did she notice the man's girlfriend who punched him in the arm and dragged him off in the opposite direction. Anna flashed a smile at the attendant selling tickets, bought one and with a murmur of thanks was on her way with a map to where the treasures were. The treasures. As the thought of her upcoming prize filled her mind her smile widened. There was always excitement when it came to a new job but this one was special. A couple of months ago an underground vault in Russia had been excavated by archeologists looking for a lost cemetery. In the vault there had been countless jewels and priceless artifacts that had made the news instantly.
Anna turned down a hallway, casually perusing the different rocks and stuffed animals put on display for the masses. As soon as she had read about the tiara's found in the vault, verified to have belonged to the last tzar of Russia she had almost squealed like a girl. Even though her job meant she had to be a mature grown up, she was essentially a very girly girl who was mesmerized by sparkling things. Sad she knew but she didn't care. She had accepted this part of herself a long time ago. So it meant that she was conscious of her clothes, her makeup and her hair. Her parents had always tried to instill in her a apathy to anything like that but they had been gone for long periods of time. In reality it was the only piece of her personality that hadn't been carefully crafted by her parents into being a perfect killing or thieving machine. Anna shook the thoughts from her mind as she focused on the job at hand. There was three tiaras among all the priceless jewels and she was going to steal all of them. She couldn't wait to feel them in her hands, the cool metal and brilliant stones.
Thank god they weren't a request job, no this was all for her which meant she could hang onto them for as long as she liked without having to sell it. Her parents would have disapproved but whatever, they weren't here were they? Anna pulled the loose edges of her jacket around her slim body. The day was overcast and from the chill in the air inside, the museum management hadn't seen fit to turn the heart on. As she rounded the corner, Anna picked up the sound of excited chatter and finally saw the newest traveling display. As soon as she saw the cases of diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds she couldn't stop herself. Anna clapped her hands together and laughed. It was short and sweet and very unlike her to show such public amusement but when you were looking at about three million dollars worth of jewels through the eyes of a thief it was hard not to. God, she thought with a now silent chuckle, this was going to be fantastic. Anna reached inside her bag and brought out a small camera.
Discreetly she looked around at the room and began to take stock of what she would have to take on. She had two days to prepare herself and on third she went in. She looked for the exits first. There was the one she had just come through and one at the opposite side of the room. There was also a beautiful sky light above the jewels. Anna almost laughed. It was going to be like taking candy from a baby! She silently reprimanded the museum's security as she was continued taking note of the security cameras, motion detectors, arm guards - of which there was five - and discreetly taking photos of everything. Later she would have to cozy up to one of them so she could find out about the hidden security. Anna smirked. A quick smile, a few compliments and a couple of giggles and they would be thinking she was a silly little girl there to look at the jewels. Too bad for them they didn't know she was one of the world's best thieves and assassins, if she said so herself, or that she had been trained for this her whole life.
Anna wasn't shy or modest about her talents though she didn't spout them out to everyone. That would be lazy and careless as well as seriously damaging if anything went missing and they could link her to it, and that simple wouldn't do. Anna after all was a perfectionist. She smiled shyly at one of the younger guards, about twenty five she supposed, and obviously not one that had had a lot of female attention from the way his face started to mimic the rubies she so coveted. Silently she laughed, ah this was going to be easy.

NOTES: yay! --- JACKSON scratched the stubble growing on his chin lightly as he read the morning paper. he bypassed the pages dedicated to the crime outbreak, what happened in the past twenty four hours, and what police were trying to do to fix it. it was the same articles everyday, the journalists just spun it a different way. it was ridiculous. and it wasn't even organized crime was the only focus. no, there were more burglaries happening and assaults seemed to have doubled. as someone who had grown up in valkyrie, he saw the steady change from 'family-friendly' to 'you remembered to lock the doors?' yes, valkyrie turned into a much darker place as more criminals found their way to town. valkyrie was like mecca, pretty much. it truly had become a gathering. and everyone was out for themselves.
it was two days before jack and his teammates would rob the valkyrie county bank. to say he was high-strung would be an understatement. he was surprised he was able to sit still to drink his coffee and read the paper. the plan had long since been mapped out, family information on the bank manager had been gathered, the getaway cars were finished. but jack, he was still always constantly worried so close to a job. you'd think if someone was so nervous of getting caught, they wouldn't do it. but as much as jack was nervous, he also, like the rest of them, loved the thrill. to steal and get away with it? it was living the high life in the most untouchable way possible. it was like they were above the law, like most criminals thought as well. it was alluring, but jack believed only the clever could evade ever getting caught. he felt like that was them. there was six of them, and they each brought something special to the table. they had only been at it for three years, which relatively made them on the newer side of the crime life, but jack knew will, rocky, and he put together the best team possible. if they hadn't well, they'd probably be in jail by now.
his television was on a low volume as valkyrie's morning show was broadcasting. he looked up as a new story started with some b-roll footage of the museum in town. he picked up the remote and turned the volume up. "...the collection consists of a rare artifacts found in an underground vault in russia by archeologists last year. the exhibit is temporarily going to be shown here at the valkyrie museum of natural history through july. when we come back, what kind of prison time is former mayor birch looking at in...." jack turned down the volume. hm. the shots they showed of the artifacts looked very... expensive. crowns, jewels, gold. jack and the team's talents laid in the bank robbing/armored truck business, however they had done a job before of stealing some paintings. they had some connections to dealers of the black market. jack needed to get his mind of of the bank job, maybe checking out potential merchandise would help him relax a bit.
he didn't rush getting ready. what was the point? the exhibit was still going to be there by the time he got there. as he was buttoning up his shirt, his phone started ringing. jack walked over to his end table by his bed and answered it. "hello?" "oh, jackson, thought i might miss you." his mother. "yeah mom. what's up?" he trapped the phone between his ear and shoulder as he finished buttoning. "i want to see you. can you come over to dinner tonight?" "i'm sort of busy tonight. how about tomorrow night? i'm free then." jack had no idea what his plans were for tonight but tomorrow night was the night before they would rob the bank. jack always saw his family the night before... just in case. "tomorrow sounds wonderful, jackson. i'll call ryder and vivienne." his mother never used nicknames the kids usually went by. she was old-fashion like that. she was even like that to his friends, calling will william and rocky, rocco. of course his family knew how close he was to the guy and elise. they just didn't know that they were a team. "sounds great mom. yup, see you then." jack disconnected the call and grabbed his car keys and slipped his wallet into his back pocket.
he rode the elevator down and got into his car. it wasn't that long until he was pulling into the parking lot of the museum. he paid his way in and casually latched himself into a tour group that was heading to the russian exhibit. climbing the stairs, he gave little attention to the tour guide who was talking about russian history and czars. the tour guide should be talking about the russian influence in valkyrie. when the group he was in entered the exhibit jack immediately knew the exhibit was a big deal. the sure upped the security for this one exhibit. guess they were not taking any chances. the tour guide paused in front of one case and started talking about it, but jack had long since checked out and he looked around all the cases. he stopped when he saw a little blonde girl looking at some of tiaras. he watched as she took her camera out and snap a few photos. usually, people did that for mementos, but jack saw this as something different. he took a few steps away from the group and concentrated more on her. he watched her as she looked at each of the guards in the room, his eyes followed hers as she found the security cameras and the motion detectors. well, goddamn. she was mapping. jack knew she was because that was what he did. he ran a hand through his hair and debated what to do. he was intrigued, so he put his hands in his pockets and walked over to her. he approached the case and looked at the contents in it for a moment. "you forgot the heat sensors," he said before looking up at her. he tapped the black device on the cases' base with his foot. "wouldn't want to miss that."

A couple of years ago she had stolen a crown from a Spaniard but this was very different. For one thing she probably wouldn't have to sleep with anyone to get what she wanted and for another these were tiaras. Actual tiaras. Worn by royalty. Which meant she was going to be able to wear them. Silently she shook the silly thoughts from her head with more than a little disgust. When did she become so silly? She had handled priceless objects all over the world, many far more expensive than this particular job. There was something about this one though. Maybe it was the fact that she had always wanted to be a princess. Or maybe it was because she was a silly little girl, she chastised herself. What had her parents taught her - no, drilled into her? There was no place in this world for silly day dreams. You had to be practical.
She sighed and pushed the thoughts away. Even though her parents had been away for more than half her childhood, their strict mandates on her life had molded her youthful mind into their idea of a perfect child - that is if you considered a child to be a criminal of the first class. Anna stepped around the case and looked at the other pieces on display. There were rules to researching a target. Rule number one: never ever tell anyone your real intentions. That was an obvious one and to date, she'd never broken it, but if she did she deserved to go to prison. It was a rookie's mistake. Rule number two: never think you're doing too much planning. That was a rule she believed strongly in. How many times had her ass been saved by a tiny detail that would have been overlooked by anyone less skilled than her. She turned her face up to the sky light, pretending to ooh and ah over the aesthetic dome shape of the roof. Though it was brisk outside, the sun was out and filled the room with the kind of natural light she loved. It was why she had chosen her present apartment. It had high ceilings, huge windows. It was airy, light and relaxed. Everything she wasn't.
Anna tilted her head to the security cameras over the doors she had come through. They were fairly simple, wired into the museum's security network. They could be overrun with a laser pointed straight at them if she was in a hurry or if she wanted the perfect clean break in, she was better off looping them over with footage of the room being empty. "You forgot the heat sensors." Anna had to force herself not to jump at the casual words. God fucking damn it. Someone had made her. She glanced briefly at him, her face falling into a mask of confusion. She followed the line of his leg as he kicked the heat sensor attached to the jewelry case. Fuck, fuck, fuck. How had she not seen that? Had she really been blinded by pretty jewels. God damn it. She could have been caught. Her blue eyes narrowed briefly before coming back up to the guy's face. He was attractive...in an arrogant kind of way. And he looked far too smug for his own good.
Anna smiled shyly, a mask again, "I'm sorry, I have no idea what you're talking about". She moved away from the guy over to another case of jewels, this one contained a beautiful Faberge egg encrusted with tiny diamonds and sapphires. She hoped the guy would remain where he was, and believe that he was mistaken in his identification of her. But still, god damn it. How had she been made? Had she broken rule number four: always be discreet. She must have.

NOTES: yay! --- HE was cocky. but only a little bit. it was a bit of the old jack combined with the new jack. so when he saw the young woman mapping out the floor plan of the museum, he thought he could have a little fun. when it came to other criminals, jack never really bothered with them. he wasn't a known criminal, and he would rather not be known as such. but, he was watching her do what he did. sure, he wielded a gun sometimes and stole stacks of money, but he spent the most time planning. he had an extraordinary attention to detail, his brain retaining even the smallest of morsels. if he didn't have this much attention, jack was convinced his plans would fall through or something would terribly go wrong. he was always on a schedule, jack was. and finding someone similar to him was a welcomed surprise.
she was caught off guard. so would he if the situation had been reversed. heat sensors were a bitch. they looked liked motion detectors, but were an added security precaution. you couldn't fool your body heat. jack was seeing more of them popping up in places. with an exhibit as expensively priceless as these russian royalty items, jack could see why the security was a little over the top. no one of high criminal status would be stupid enough to try and rob the place in broad daylight. this would be a night job, when only the technology was in the way. with people in the way, it would only get messy. especially guards who probably failed the police exam and had resorted to being security guards at a museum. their drive would always be to prove themselves worthy of being a big dog. emotions like that could get someone hurt. people trying to be 'the hero.' jack and the team had to deal with that every time they were on the job. jack believed that really they were stupid. could one person really take down a team with three people armed with guns? fifteen minutes of fame wasn't worth a goddamn life. they were just jealous. they were jealous that they didn't think of this first, they were jealous the robbers would automatically be rich while the common man continued to work the nine to five job.
when she smiled at him, he knew she was probably secretly thinking how he made her. no one else in the exhibit knew what she was up to, but jack was just that good. there was that cockiness again. jack knew that stuff like this probably happened everyday in valkyrie. criminals stealing things, making plan, etc, but it was just interesting to him to find another doing it. "I'm sorry, I have no idea what you're talking about" he nodded. so this was how she wanted to play it. she would be stupid to think that he wouldn't follow her, because he did right to the next case. he looked back at the case they just left. "curious," he continued as if she didn't try to leave him at all. "the... egg might be of worth, but i imagine the tiaras are for you?" he asked with a smirk. he looked around at all the people by themselves or with their friends and family looking at the prized jewels with awe. commenting how pretty they were or mothers telling their daughters these were what princesses wore. the tour guide he was a part of was still giving a history lesson to her group, commenting at a painting of russia on the wall. everyone was going about their business while two criminals conversed in front of a case. jack wondered if she was from around here, or (like most of the criminals these days) found their way to valkyrie because of the rumors that the city seemed to hold. "my name is jack," he said looking at her again. "and it seems like you and i have something in common, wouldn't you say?"

Somehow she knew she wasn’t going to be able to get rid of him. Maybe it was the smirk or the confidence in his body stance as he made her. She didn’t know and she didn’t care. Okay, that wasn’t totally true. Any other day she would have flirted a little, had some fun, but jobs weren’t for fun. A mistake she had already made today. Anna frowned but quickly turned her face back to one of a girl enjoying the jewels of a past age. As a person she was a perfectionist. She always had to do everything just right or it was a mistake. Perhaps it was too much pressure to put on her self but she had always been like that so she didn’t feel like she had to start changing herself now. She was who she was and she wasn’t going to fight it, hence the mental reprimand she was giving her self.
It was hard being in a town full of thieves and killers. They all knew the same tricks, or at the very least a weak variation, so a lot of people had the skills to recognize other criminals. It was one of the down sides to Valkyrie but there were also perks. For one thing there were a lot of petty thieves and thugs that could be played as the fall guy so she could save herself. There was also the fact that she had a lot more jobs coming in from the mafia families outsourcing. Lately she’d had more jobs than she could deal with so she’d forwarded them on to a few colleagues. This job was like a break for her, not having to worry about a client backing out at the last minute, or not paying, or hiring someone to kill her after she gives it to them. God, in her line of work there were a lot of different land mines one could step on. "curious, the... egg might be of worth, but i imagine the tiaras are for you?" She was right, he hadn’t intended on leaving her alone.
She glanced behind her she saw the smirk on his face and felt herself bristle in annoyance. Even though she was arrogant herself she was always pissed off when others showed the trait. Probably because she knew she was better than this guy. So there. Yeah that was a bit childish but it made her feel a little better. Her eyes widened in pretend innocence then quickly changed to glaciers, ”Honestly, I have no idea what you’re talking about. I’m just here to enjoy these beautiful jewels in peace.” She emphasized the last part of her sentence to make sure this guy got the message of ‘fuck off, you’re not wanted here’. Her voice was frosty to say the least and her nose was stuck up in her rich bitch telling the pauper to get the fuck out of the way, which she would have had to have done anyway since this guy was taller than her. It was rude definitely and Anna’s more polite side winced at it but frankly she didn’t care. If she was going to get this done, she wanted to do it in peace. If that meant being deliberately obtuse, fine, she’d be obtuse.
She glanced around them, making sure no one else was suspicious of her or the guy. There were lots of women around, carting around husbands or boyfriends or friends so that they could ooh and ah over the jewels that would make any woman happy. "my name is jack, and it seems like you and i have something in common, wouldn't you say?" Her eyes flew back to Jack, an interest lighting the blue of her eyes. So this guy was a thief too? Strange, she hadn’t seen him before and usually she knew pretty much anyone worth knowing in the business. For a second she measured the pros and cons of continuing on with her façade and then relented. ”Anna,” she replied warily, ”and if you say so Jack –“ Anna cut herself off as she realized something. He was a thief. He was here. He was trying to snake her job!
Her anger returned in force as she moved closer to Jack and poked a finger at his chest. ”Hey! If you’re here to move in on my score get lost. You’re right, the tiaras are mine so if you touch them I’m going to have to kick your ass.” While she spoke she continuously jabbed her finger at him, her eyes flashing with anger. There were times of course when thieves came together on the same job accidentally but this wasn’t going to be one of those times. She had dibs on those tiaras god damn it. She was here first! And yeah, her threat seemed weak, especially since it was coming from her, and she didn’t really look dangerous, but she would live up to it if she had to.

NOTES: yay! --- DENIAL. jack found that the young woman was so adamant about not doing what jack knew she was doing. then again, he would have been kicking himself too if someone had made him from across the room. she looked much younger than him, maybe he just knew to cover his tracks better? he was curious to know how long she had been at this. stealing russian jewels? that was pretty high up there on the difficulty scale. from the motion detectors to the security cameras, jack wondered how she was going to go about doing this. did she work alone? or did she, too, work in a team like he did? from the looks, he was going to guess she was doing this job solo. maybe it was just the way she came off. defensive and denying everything. she should have known better that jack was just going to drop this and move on. no, he was definitely interested now. especially since she was trying to get rid of him. he could only smile. he found... entertainment that he could make her feel uncomfortable.
he would blame his life in los angeles for his arrogant behavior. it usually never came off so strong when he was with his friends, because he knew he had nothing to prove with them. but after he graduated from college and moved to los angeles, everyday you would wake up with something to prove. every time you thought you were ahead, you were really ten steps behind. it was cut-throat brutal with the other young guys his age trying to one-up each other to get their supervisor's approval. it was competitive. jack won out in the end, but look what headache that caused him. framed, fired, and laughed out of los angeles. but it reminded him a lot of the criminal world, too. you were always trying to win, trying to take, and trying to have it all. not so different at all. only difference he saw was that it was more dangerous to be a criminal. living the life of crime was risky, secretive, and almost made it impossible to let people in. his team and close friends aside, he couldn't even share with his family this big part of his life. relationships? forget about it. in the past three years, jack never engaged himself into anything long-term with women. there were flings and such, and a couple that could have gone somewhere, but fell flat when jack couldn't be honest. maybe it was more his fault because he couldn't trust someone that easily. he was friends with jude. well, a secretive friendship since she was close friends with his little sister. but, jack wanted more, and maybe it was best she kept stonewalling him. she would want nothing to do with him if she knew the truth about him. what she did... was technically legal, but what he did, was not.
”Honestly, I have no idea what you’re talking about. I’m just here to enjoy these beautiful jewels in peace.” oh. she was completely trying to ditch him. since she was saying it loud and clear to him, jack remained standing where he was. "i think the silver one would suit you best," he said of the silver tiara. he was pressing her buttons and thoroughly enjoying himself. she looked around, to either see if anyone was picking up on their conversation, or maybe she was signalling to a teammate? jack took his eyes off of her for a moment, but he didn't see anyone out of the ordinary, or trying to blend into the ordinary. would other thieves flock to this place as well? it was always tricky to know if anyone else was planning a job you planned on doing. it wasn't like you advertized it. no, you just went all in, hoping for the best and hoping that when you arrived someone else decked out to look incognito. he would have to keep his eye on the papers in the coming weeks. to see if a.) anyone stole anything from the museum, or b.) anyone tried to steal something from the museum and was caught. it would only go one of the two ways.
her name was anna, as she revealed after moments of silence when jack introduced himself. she started to speak again but she stopped mid-sentence. he turned down to look at her and suddenly she closed the distance between them and started poking him in the chest, hissing at him to back off of her job, and he better not touch her tiaras. his eyebrows shot up, "kick my ass?" he asked her sarcastically and laughed. a couple walked by them, eying them curiously as anna continuously poked his chest. "simmer down, darling. no one said they were taking anything of yours." jack never did anything solo himself, he was a packaged deal with his teammates. and considering they had a job themselves coming up here, they probably weren't going to rush into another one so close together. but... anna didn't have to know that. he gently pushed her hand away from his chest. "i don't know... because those tiaras of... yours are looking very appealing to me now. i think i might just have to take them."

She was obviously telling him to get lost, well she thought she was being fairly obvious about it but he was sticking around. Usually all she had to do was give her frosty frown and she could send men scurrying on their way, even ones who thought they were God’s gift to women, like this one obviously thought he was. She smirked up at him. It was ironic that she disliked arrogance so much that she was driven to actual anger, when she was the kind of person who was unashamed of talking herself up to clients. In her opinion she was one of the best despite her young age. She had around five years experience where she had crammed every job she could. Anna wasn’t the type to sit around and twiddle her thumbs relaxing on a beach somewhere. No, she was the type to continuously seek out jobs. It was how she had been made, or so to speak. Everything her parents had done had been to make her better, faster, stronger. They had taught her to always work, that relaxing was practically a sin. Yes, they had been workaholics. And yes they had eventually died on the job, as criminals were prone to. ”The silver one would suit you best.” She flashed a glance at him and then down to the tiara he had mentioned. Personally she had thought the same thing, but she would never ever tell him that.
Sure she’d just met this guy but already she had a feeling she was going to end up smacking him one on the head and she never did that – ever. Anna ignored him, but when she realized he must be here to take her score and started poking him in the chest, she forgot her intention to remain calm as her eyes narrowed on his face. She watched as his eyes shot up, ”Kick my ass?” His sarcasm and laugh had her clenching her jaw as she poked his chest again. Even though she knew she wasn’t the toughest or meanest looking person, and the fact that she deliberately cultivated the rich girl look, she didn’t like being underestimated. ”Simmer down, darling. No one said they were taking anything of yours.” She glanced briefly around to see that no one was taking too much interest in them and forced herself to calm down. There was no use in blowing her cover. Anna placed the hand she had poked him with on her hip when he brushed it away. She glared up at Jack, ”Don’t call me darling.” She was going to say more, like what he could do with his smirks, but then he continued, ”I don’t know…because those tiaras of…yours are looking very appealing to me now. I think I might just have to take them.” Her eyes narrowed on him. She wasn’t sure if he was teasing her or not but she didn’t like it either way. He wasn’t obeying her and she hated that.
Why on earth her ice bitch facade had decided to leave her at that particular moment she would never know. That she had actually lost control for a moment and poked him in the chest was without a doubt stupid and she didn’t like stupidity. God, what was wrong with her? She hated that she had somehow found within herself the kind of anger that could make her irrational, have her make mistakes, and fail the job, and that simply wouldn’t do. Anna took several deep breaths to calm her self and pulled her best ice bitch frown into place. ”I think not. After all, I hardly think these are your style, unless I was initially right in that you have a personal interest in this exhibit.” Yes she was suggesting he was a cross dresser and yes goddamn it she was being a bitch about it. She knew he wasn’t one, and that it was a cheap shot but it felt good. All of this was because of him, as immature as that sounded. Something about him had her riled up and ready to fight with him when usually all she had to do was glare and the problem started running in the opposite direction.
Well this problem of hers was not going anywhere any time soon. Do you really want him to though? A small voice niggled at the back of her mind. Aren’t you having fun? No. She most definitely was not. Anna stuck her nose in the air, tossed her blonde hair over her shoulders and stalked past Jack, her foot expertly stamping down on his toe as she passed. It was a pity she wasn’t wearing heels so she could really hurt him but her solid flats would have to do. She hoped it hurt – a lot. Anna walked casually away; fuming inside as she blended with the crowd and headed towards the next case, one filled with cut jewels that had not been placed in a setting. They were beautiful and of such rich colours she couldn’t help but forget about Jack for a second. The best thing about being a thief was she was able to indulge in her love of jewels.

NOTES: fuck, sorry this is late. my jack muse was shot for like a week. --- SHE could technically leave at any time, and maybe jack would actually let her walk away and they'd both move on to whatever they were doing before. but, since she moved from one case to another, she was still only walking several feet away from him. even though jack knew there were eons of criminals living in the city, he felt like he was in a bubble. the only criminals he knew well, were of course his teammates. he knew carter was associated with the italians, and there were some italians they did business with to get firearms needed for their heists, but beyond that, he knew nobody. he sort of liked it that way. the less you knew, the better off you were seemed like the motto of the town. jack didn't know if he wanted to surround himself with a lot of criminal friends. the last thing he would want to do would be to put his family in danger. he knew they were safe now because jackson sharpe wasn't a known criminal. his parents kept pressing him for what he actually did to make money. they knew he hadn't used the money in his trust fund since he was living in los angeles. his mother was just confused how jack could still maintain his kind of lifestyle with no "real" job. his family was right to question him about that. he still wore expensive clothes, drove a nice car, lived in a big apartment, he would be confused too if he saw one of his siblings doing this with no job. so, jack just lied and said he and his friends were... freelance investors or sorts. silent investors that gave money to small businesses and projects that needed some money backing to get off the ground. it was the only thing jack could think of that made some sense and could explain why he hadn't actually done anything since he was laughed out of los angeles.
jack laughed when she mentioned he must have a personal interest in the exhibit. he ran a hand through his black hair, it had grown a few inches longer than he was used to. his brother told him he needed to get it cut. "you know as well as i know that money is money no matter the gender the item might be intended for." it was true. no one ever not stole something because it clashed with their outfit. and even if he were to steal the tiaras, he wouldn't keep them. he wasn't in the business of keeping things as trophies. the few times the team had stolen artifacts, they had buyers. they just wanted the money. supply and demand was the trade, it didn't matter if it was illegal or not. they had slowly become more wealthier the more jobs they did. even if they split it six ways whatever the take would become, they had been doing this for three years and that adds up over time. at first, they all had their own reasons why they needed the money. jack had nothing, will had debts, rocky also had nothing to come back to when he was released from prison, and elise could easily pay off her student loans and get herself through school. but now they were in that transition where they probably didn't need the money anymore, but they continued to do it because one, they could, and two, it was fun. if they were smart, they should just get out now. they had enough to sustain themselves, build a life, grow old and die. none of them mentioned this aloud though. maybe because for their own personal reasons they just weren't ready to take themselves out of the game. maybe they were all just fools. they could go and go and go, and maybe five, ten, fifteen years down the road they'd get caught.
he was getting on her nerves and he didn't care. though, when she walked by him she drove her foot into his. hard. he bent over for a fraction of a second hissing, "shit," under his breath. oh, so we got ourselves a fighter over here. jack danced in place for a moment, trying ti shake the throb. regaining his composure he looked up to see an older couple looking at him a few feet away, their eyes ignoring the case they were standing in front of and staring at him. he smiled at them, and shook his head. "just a... disagreement," he told them pointing at himself and then to anna, who was ignoring him at the next case. he shrugged and shook his head. "she doesn't like being wrong." the old man nodded at him, clearly he must have dealt with his lovely wife when they were younger. he turned and slowly walked over to anna again, ignoring the fading throbbing in his foot. "well-played, but you just can't seem to get rid of me, can you?" he was feeling a bit bolder than usual, so he put his arm around her and leaned in, pretending to point at one of the jewels so people around them wouldn't cue in. "and you wouldn't want to cause a scene, would you? now, this just might be me, but when i'm mapping a place out, i try and be discreet," he said to her, his voice light and slightly teasing. he liked this a little too much.
