[/ul] ' ' Hugo had not really dated anyone since his wife died. It was not that he was not really ready or anything it was more, after she died, Ace got into college and he had to deal with the moving and then trying to get used to a new job as a detective in a new city and above all, trying to find a way to get Ace his heart transplant. With all of that on his shoulders, Hugo was really not in the place or time to be worried about dating. According to Ace, Hugo was blind when a woman was interested. A specific woman to be fair. Her name was Chloe. Hugo had clearly noticed how beautiful she was. It was actually rare for him to mentally note when a woman was beautiful. Around this town, it seemed like everyone was attractive enough to live in magazines but Hugo had barely noticed any of them. But Chloe and him met at a local coffee shop, just after he had been rejected once again, desperately needing money for Ace. But she had talked with him for a bit, even met Ace. The way Hugo remembered it was that the lady was actually a bit put off that he had a 13 year old in college, with a starkly clear problem with authority, but at the same time, the way Ace remembered it was Chloe checking Hugo out and practically... oh how did he put it... "her pupils were replaced with the words 'jump me'." Yeah... Ace was definitely a charmer. It might be genetic. Not so much the intelligence but truth is, before Isla died, Hugo was a bit of a smart ass himself, even more so if you had met him before what happened on the Bismark, but then again, what would you expect? He grew up on the streets of New York, he had been the smart alec pick pocket his son now had grown into although, Hugo had to hand it to his boy, he had taken it to a whole new level. But back on topic, Hugo had actually run into Chloe again a few days later. Ace's words wouldn't get out of his head, she did seem a bit interested but the way Hugo saw it, he was probably just projecting. And then he ran into her again, she definitely seemed interested that time but she is younger than him and very pretty and nice but I mean, Hugo has a hard enough time dealing with Ace and life and a million of other things. Ace nearly hit him when he heard he had seen Chloe yet again and did nothing. Finally the next time he saw her, Hugo had basically decided why not? I mean, he liked her. But also, Hugo didn't want Ace to feel like he was holding Hugo back, because he wasn't. Quite the opposite in fact. So, Hugo had asked her out on a date, finally. She had said yes and now here he was, picking her up to take her to the Pier. Yes the pier. Hugo was not the type of guy who could handle the strained awkward dinner at a nice restaurant, nor could he afford them. But even if he was the wealthiest man in the world, he could never do it. People need something to do to take pressure off, plus, what's more fun than carnival rides and junk food on a stick after dark? Oh right... not much. Hugo pulled on his leather jacket and glanced back at Ace who was on the couch with homework but watching his father before smirking and giving him a thumbs up. Hugo raised his eyebrows and nodded, "Yeah, don't hack into your school's mainframe... or anywhere, or you will once again see the inside of a cell." Hugo said only half kidding. He gave his son a smile before shutting the door behind him. Sucks trying to be the responsible dad type. Hugo got into his car and in a shorter time than was expected, was walking up to Chloe's place and knocking on the door, He waited patiently, his back to the door. A bit nervous, simply because he hadn't dated in... what? ten years. God he sounded old for a 30 year old. "yes, the one before i met up with you in vermont." she was pacing... again. at least she wasn't biting her nails, a common trait for yvette. "that's rough, sis. and you're staying in valkyrie? it thought you'd be in some other place by now." her younger brother was correct. it was unlike yvette to stay in a place where someone knew her real name. but, this never had happened before, so it was very... unsettling. "i would be, but i'm on a job already," she told him. "how deep?" he asked her. yvette bit her lip. the thing was, she could have left. she had only scratched the surface of this job. there was an easy out of this one because nothing yet had happened. "i'm going on our first date tonight." owen started laughing at her. she held the phone away from her ear as he continued to laugh. "one date? evie..." more laughter. "i'm about to hang up on you," she stated and the laughing ceased immediately. "i'm sorry. it's just that, it seems very unlike you." she trapped the phone between her shoulder and her ear as she went through her purse making sure she had everything she needed. hugo would be here shortly. "well, this is just how it is. i really don't think harrison is going to turn me in." she shrugged. "i played a game with him and if he thinks he can do that to me now, i'll make him believe he is." owen sighed on the other end. "be careful, alright?"
yvette huffed over the phone. "yeah, you're telling me. please tell me you did way with the cock fighting? you could get yourself killed." yvette walked into the bathroom to see if any of her make-up needed a touch-up. "everyone has to make a living, sis. i can't rely off of your money forever." she looked down. she did constantly send her little brother money when he needed it. "you know i don't mind. sometimes i have too much myself." the money she got from her jobs went to an array of different things. it went into getting the documents for her next persona, money to buy herself a new wardrobe in the style of the next woman she would play, and renting a place, like the upscale apartment she bought when she got here. not to mention, the furnishings. money went to owen, and of course she indulged herself in jewelry. sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and of course diamonds. she liked the glittery stuff. she was still a girl at heart, no matter the personality that was currently attached to her.
"i know you don't, but i do. i can't mooch off my sister forever. i have to go though. good luck on your date. the harrison thing will probably work itself out eventually." she smiled. then she heard a knock on her door. "i have to go too. hugo's here. i'll talk to you later." they both disconnected and yvette pulled her hair up into a ponytail. she was looking casual... for once. it took every bit of her to put the tight skirts and form-fitting dresses back into the closest and choose something more dressed down. she could not ditch the heels though. they were a crutch. she grabbed her purse and headed to the front door. in truth, yvette was dangerously close to giving up on hugo. after the first failed attempt to get or giver his/her number, she thought for sure the second "run-in" would be a slam-dunk. think again. but then by the third time, he finally asked her out. yvette was rather relieved when he asked her, because she didn't think she would ever see their first date. now that she had to look behind her shoulder since harry was in town, she needed to speed this relationship of theirs up. but, she knew she had to do it carefully. something was up with hugo that she couldn't put her finger on quite yet. his slow on the asking either meant he was just in a long-term relationship, or maybe a divorce? his son said a lot. she opened up the door right after she glanced at herself one last time in the mirror by the front door. "hugo," she greeted him with a warm smile and stepped in and hugged him. she shut and locked her front door. "where are we going? i'd be lying if i said i wasn't looking forward to seeing you again."

[/ul] ' ' It was a bit on the strange side that he had grown up to be a cop. Well, detective technically but growing up, Hugo hated cops. He hated them with a passion. In his mind they were all just hypocrites who hurt more than they helped, greedy bastards who would let killers go after being paid a pretty penny but would hunt down an eight year old pick pocket who was simply hungry so they could fill their arrest quota and get paid because it didn't look like they were sitting on their asses all day. They were constantly just trying to put Hugo either into Juvy or with a new family, usually ones that just wanted that government check. I swear, if you had changed the setting to 20th century London, Hugo's young life would have been a Charles Dickens' book. He stayed like that on the street for a long time. Just him and a few other homeless kids. Learning to pick pocket like a pro, doing a few errands for local Bloods, some Sirens and Crypts too. Anyone really. Anything to get by. Hugo as a kid, was so angry all the time, he felt like life was hopeless so acting any other way was useless. But he learned how to take care of himself. he knew how to get by on his own, even if it meant ever once and a while eating from the garbage can and snatching hot dogs from the street venders and running like hell. He got into a lot of bad situations and almost died more times than I could count. Once, him and this group of kids were hiding out in some old abandoned warehouse. What they didn't know was that the place was rigged to be demolished. They heard the security check and tried to hide. Hugo was one of the only ones that hid by getting out of the place. You see, when they do those checks, the people just call out to see if anyones in the building. If you don't respond or get out, they assume it's clear. About three kids died in that demolition and it wasn't until days later when they cleaning up the rubble that they found out. The media surrounding the company in charge of the demolition tried to play it off as some big tragedy but believe me, hugo and the others all knew no one really cared. That was just so people sitting in their living rooms watching the news could say "oh what a shame" while they ate their steaks and continued on with their evening to make them think they still had an ounce of humanity in them. It was pathetic. The newscaster covering the story even said "luckily, the kids didn't seem to have any families out searching for them." That always stuck out to Hugo. For some reason that one line from the news anchor was lodged permanently in his memory. I mean he got it, their were no mourning parents suing the company, well you know what? good for them. But it wasn't lucky for kids who died. They lived alone, on the street, the closest thing they had to family were the kids sleeping next to them in the dirt, after having not eaten in days. They lived and died alone. If that seems lucky to the average American, than this country is fucking screwed. The truth was after what happened on the Bismark, Hugo had just wanted to help. It was why he got into the police academy and worked his way to detective. It was why he was a volunteer fireman. It was why Isla had always had to push him, despite his sometimes questionable views on the law, he had a bit of a hero's complex in him. He had seen too much death. Kids shot in drive bys and the demolition as a kid, the Bismark as a young adult, Isla just in the past year or so, and now his son was dying because Hugo couldn't afford his heart transplant. It wasn't going to happen, he was determined. But all of that anger, all of that sadness, it was probably the reason Hugo was glad Ace pushed him into asking Chloe out, maybe spending some time with a nice interesting girl could be... therapeutic in a way. Hugo turned around as he heard the door open and saw Chloe, looking beautiful as always. "Hey, you look great"He said hugging her back, he leaned back up standing up straight as she shut and locked her door. "where are we going? i'd be lying if i said i wasn't looking forward to seeing you again." Hugo grinned and nodded, "Likewise" He replied putting his arm out for her, "And we are going to a place with water and moonlight so you'll think I'm sensitive, but where I can still maintain my male ego by throwing something and winning you a stuffed animal." He said in a sarcastic, playful tone. He gently dropped his arm and stepped ahead a bit to open the door to his car for her. so, she was a criminal, and clearly a good one. but in this town? she knew she would rank below most of them. all she possessed was her conning skills. she never killed anyone, her fighting skills would be laughable, she didn't carry weapons around in her purse on in a garter underneath her dresses. nope. she was just a simple common criminal from viriginia. she didn't make too many friends or hang out in the dive bars frequented by criminals. yvette had no interest in getting to know them. what was the point? she'd get her money from hugo and high-tail it out of here. then, go north probably. los angeles was too close, but northern california showed some promise. she glanced at hugo for a moment. he really had no idea what game she was playing. yvette didn't feel bad, though. once you start to feel, then you start to care, and you can't have either of those things or you'll find yourself in one big mess. that was usually when she knew she had to get out of a job. she was an exceptional faker, but when she was with these men six months to a year... once she felt even a scratch of feeling she sped up her con and within the week, she was gone with no more than a note. she always left a note. she didn't want these men thinking she was kidnapped or something.
yvette took his arm he offered to her. gentleman. "And we are going to a place with water and moonlight so you'll think I'm sensitive, but where I can still maintain my male ego by throwing something and winning you a stuffed animal." the pier? she was a little surprised, but it was very thoughtful. this was why she wore jeans. yvette smiled. "well, in that case, you better win the biggest stuffed animal there is for me," she said jokingly. she hadn't been to the pier yet since she moved here, but she knew it was a popular place to go. year-round ferris wheel rides and carnival games was the attraction. this was why she found the west coast more exciting. well, it probably was because she was so used to the east coast, but california so far had already met all her expectations. he led her to his car and she got in. she put her seat belt on and waited for him to get in. he started the car and started heading towards the pier, which from her apartment, wasn't that far. "you know, if we ran into each other one more time, i think i would have had to ask you out myself." yvette knew he probably needed some push to finally call her after three run-ins with no date. hugo's push must have come in the form of his teenage son. which had to be a first for her. "do i have ace to thank for tonight?" she asked, angling her body towards him in the car and smiling teasingly.

[/ul] ' ' Hugo had never been one for the fancy dinner dates at nice restaurants. One, he had never been able to afford them but more than that he wasn't that type of guy. Hugo was the guy who was happiest with a beer, pizza and watching the game. The nice dinners just seemed to be pretentious and annoying to him. After all, should not more money get you more food? Wouldn't that make sense? But no, the higher the amount of stars a food joint had, the less food you get in each dish and the more money it costs you. After what happened with the Bismark, Hugo had been getting offers from tons of different news papers and they all seemed to take him to the same five star restaurants like this would be an effective bribe for someone who had lived on the street for so long, but let me just tell you, if you've lived on the street, if you've been dirty poor and someone wants to spend 100 dollars on you're dinner? What you want is a lot of food that will last you for a long time. Have some to take back with you for later, something that will fill ya up and keep ya going but no. Instead he got less food and less filling food than he could have got at mC donalds with a buck that he earns begging. I mean what is the point of that? and it doesn't even taste that good!! It usually tastes weird... and foreign. No, Pizza, burgers, mac 'n' cheese with ground beef in it(also known as the poor man's hamburger helped which is sad seeing as hamburger helper is usually seen as a poor person food anyways). But there it was. Those foods fill you up, get ya going, taste insanely wonderful and are very cheap. Will they clog your arteries? Yeah sure, but at least you won't be hungry. Even their salads are only a bit larger that 3 inches in diameter. I mean really? So for his dates, Hugo wanted them to know that he was not the guy to be with if they wanted fancy dinners with teeny portions and quiet voices. He would not want them to think he had the money for that kind of thing either. He wanted them to know who he was. He was a down to earth, casual cop. He would have some strange hours for his job. He was never going to be wealthy, although his kid probably will. He would never really want to be too wealthy. Just wealthy enough to always be able to take care of the people he loved, a money amount he was not able to get at this very moment. But he just, he didn't want chloe to go out on a date with a man who wasn't actually Hugo Burns. Or okay, technically Robert Hugo Burns. Yeah yeah Robert Burns like the poet, apparently his parents, whoever they were had a bit of a sense of humor. Or they were just poorly educated and had never heard of Robert Burns, which would be pretty bad seeing as Hugo had never had the greatest education or schooling and he knew who the poet was. Ace's mother picked an unfortunate name for him too. Ace's name was Dennis. Hugo thought it fit, Dennis the Menace and all that but he did agree with his 13 year old genius, Dennis was a bad name. Ace was a nickname the boy had picked up beating people in black jack on the street, how he made the money to find Hugo when he was eight. It had stuck ever since. Counting cards like a professional at eight... sometimes it astounded Hugo that his kid could be so naturally gifted. Actually forget sometimes, it always surprised him. Especially since Hugo saw himself as so ridiculously average, if not below. So to the pier it was. junk food, moonlight, candy, rides and a beautiful girl? If that wasn't enough to get his mind off his worries for at least awhile, than nothing was. "well, in that case, you better win the biggest stuffed animal there is for me," Hugo scoffed, "Pssht course, that's a given with all this raw... manliness." He added sarcastically gesturing at himself. He was clearly kidding. He was not a super buff guy. I mean he wasn't chubby or skinny or anything, he could run fast and had slight abs but he is not a guy you'd look at and see pure testosterone. Again, he screamed average. He shut the door for her and jogged around the front of the car to get to the drivers side. He got in and placed the key in the ignition and soon they were on their way. "you know, if we ran into each other one more time, i think i would have had to ask you out myself." Hugo laughed, "Maybe I shouldn't have acted so soon then, I love being the askee." He replied, only half kidding. Nothing wrong with a woman seeing what she wants and going for it. In fact, those types of women were the one's he usually went for. Strong, independent, they needed a kind heart but he liked fire in that heart with it. He also didn't think it made him less of a man in any way to like a woman who takes a bit of the control. He doesn't like to feel powerless, but one of the best things about strong women is that he could relax a bit and let them take the reigns. "do i have ace to thank for tonight?" Hugo smiled sort of guiltily. She did sort of actually. "He may have nudged me, I wasn't sure if I was... good to go." He said, tone casual but his eyes kind of serious, "I haven't actually had to go on a first date for... well... awhile, 9 years to be specific." He added as they pulled into the parking lot by the beach where they could easily walk to the pier. tagged; lainey/evie outfit; nice casual[/ul] [/div]

as they drove, her mind drifted back to the conversation with her brother, owen. he had every right to question her motives right now. he knew her better than anyone. why was she staying in valkyrie when someone was here that knew her true identity? she must have tripped and hit her head, because yvette was aware this was not good, but she didn't stop herself. she blamed hugo. if he wasn't so goddamn interesting, she would have left already. it wasn't like they had built some sort of relationship by now. yvette could have left and hugo probably wouldn't have thought twice about it. but he wasn't like the rest somehow, and that was what kept her interested. her uncle would probably kill her for staying. this was how she was going to end up in prison for sure, he would tell her. she would be foolish to stay since she hadn't made the connection yet. but even if she was distracted by thoughts of harrison being in town, she wasn't worried about the cops. perhaps she was being a bit bold here, but harry was more concerned about getting even. cops couldn't be involved.
"Maybe I shouldn't have acted so soon then, I love being the askee." yvette gave him a smile. "well, looks like i'll be asking you to go on a second date at the end of the night, won't i?" she chuckled a little bit, but was still serious. she really thought ace was a neat kid, but she just didn't know how to take hugo's thirteen year old prodigy. yvette liked to think she was decent with kids, when she had been around them regularly. she was one of the babies in her family growing up, but she had lots of younger cousins she always saw definitely at family get togethers. and as she grew older, she didn't mind when one of her aunts passed their toddler off on her to entertain. but, she never played any of her cousins, she wasn't really a criminal back then. and sure, over these past five years she was around nieces and nephews of a man she was conning, but that was just different. Conning their uncle was one thing, conning their father was something differently entirely. yvette... she didn't know. felt bad or something. she'd like to stick with 'or something' because feeling remorse for anything she did was a sign she needed to leave.
"I haven't actually had to go on a first date for... well... awhile, 9 years to be specific." and there hugo went again, making it increasingly harder for her to cut the little ties they had and walk away. she looked over at him as he stated this. yvette had a feeling that maybe this was just a little bit of what yvette was trying to figure out about him. nine years, huh? well, fuck, no pressure, right? the possibilities behind this were truly endless. it could be ace's mother. did she recently leave? divorce? did she die? yvette had worked with a man who lost a girlfriend who left him a couple years ago. in this sort of case, she didn't feel as bad conning him. she was able to be that rebound who wasn't but was a rebound at the same time. she wasn't offended that he used her to get over the previous girlfriend. technically, yvette had been using him right back. she liked to think she helped him get over the past love. but with hugo... maybe something happened nine years ago? and he had just been doing the single dad thing for the past nine years. shit, she felt even worse if that was the case. despite everything she did, she did believe every person deserved someone who loved them unconditionally and who was in it for the long-haul. yvette was silent for only a moment as she tried wording her words as carefully as possible as they pulled into a parking space right off the pier. "did you... just get out of a relationship? or..." but then she shook her head as she took off her seat belt. "you know what? nevermind, you don't have to tell me anything if it's too soon." she passed him back one of her sweetest smiles. "come on, let's go find some shooting game. i want the biggest of all teddy bears." yvette hopped out of the car and walked over to him, and tugged him by the arm towards the pier.

She was spunky and loud and funny with a laugh that could catch on like wildfire. Isla was this redheaded, spitfire. She was passionate and loving. Hugo had never met someone like her. And her family, they were amazing from the way she told it. Her parents had died a long time ago but she still kept in close contact with her siblings and her cousins. They all accepted Hugo, he had gotten to know them all, he still stays in contact with them. Him and Isla were making a family. Most girls he had been with since the Bismark Tragedy would run out after the first few nights. Hugo was too depressed, He was too angry, he was too "emotionally stunted" as one girl put it. Although the fact that hugo would wake up sweating and yelling every night from dreams of what happened, I guess that didn't help. Now Isla? She laughed and said, "What were those bitches complaining about? I think you have a right to be a bit pissed off at what happened? Talk about being self centered. I would eat them but they would probably taste like condescension."
And when Hugo woke up screaming, she would sit up, rub his shoulders, kiss his on the cheek and give him tea that he would never actually drink. But she was taught that when someone was upset, you gave them a hot beverage. She made tea a lot. More tea than any of us ever drank. Isla would literally make tea that would just sit around their apartment. Hugo was a coffee drinker, she liked tea but only slightly, really Isla just liked making tea, it made her feel comforted somehow. She encouraged Hugo to find my passion and quit his job at the paper. She even helped him figure out what it was he was supposed to do, and he began his training at the police academy. It was everything she did, even when they fought, which they did, but there were literally moments they would go from yelling at each other red with anger to rolling on the floor laughing at a funny face one of them made, or if spittle had fallen out of the other's mouth as they yelled. He had loved the way she scrunched her nose in her sleep if you tickled her shoulder. He loved this high pitched little sneeze she had. He loved her spontaneousness. He loved and fought against her hard headed stubbornness. He loved that she would google car terms so she could trick people into knowing that she knew anything about cars, just to laugh at their face when they realized she didn't know what she was saying. He loved that he could not open the skylight in his old car with out her hand immediately being raised above her head so she could feel the wind. Hugo, not being a dumbass, knew what he had with her, so one night, he married that girl. She changed his life. He went from being the alone, forgotten hero of the Bismark shipwreck, to being a man with his whole life ahead of him. To this day, Hugo still felt as though he owed her his life.
She even stuck by him when the whirlwind of trouble Ace came into his life and turned it upside down. He had won the lottery with Isla. He could say the general things everyone says. She was smart, funny, kind but honestly? There were tons of smart, funny, kind people out in the world, none of those things make us who we are. Hugo was a good guy who had been given a fair many raw deals in a row. There were plenty of good guys given raw deals what made Hugo hugo were the details, the face that he loves brussel sprouts cooked with bacon, that tomatos make sandwiches taste rotten to him, that he will now make tea at the end of a bad day and just let it sit next to him until it gets cold. Those things, those make him Hugo. And honestly, he was glad Ace pushed him into this date. Chloe seemed to be smart, funny and nice but hopefully he would get to know who she actually was, through the details. "well, looks like i'll be asking you to go on a second date at the end of the night, won't i?" Hugo grinned and scoffed slightly, "Hey now, I still have time to screw this up, not smart to make that kind of promise just yet." He replied, his tone light and sarcastic.
Hugo did feel much older than he actually was, despite being a thirty year old on a date with a woman in her early twenties. I mean, Chloe seemed mature to him so honestly it didn't bother him at all, she was half plus seven which according to Ace was the rule with dating younger. He told him earlier that night when Hugo had been a bit apprehensive and had been trying to use age as excuse, Ace told him he couldn't because the rule was that you can date someone who is at least half your age plus seven years, so a 40 year old supposedly could date no younger than 27 to be culturally sound or whatever. Hugo didn't really get it but there it was. "did you... just get out of a relationship? or..." Hugo breathed deeply for a moment, he should have seen that question, great first date conversation, Hugo. He mentally scolded himself. "you know what? nevermind, you don't have to tell me anything if it's too soon." Hugo smiled and shook his head as he got out of the car, "If it was too soon I would not be on a date." He said, with a small laugh in his voice to attempt casualness. "I was married. She, uh, died, last year. Ace has been ready for me to date a lot longer than I have been although honestly, I just thinks he wants me to stop bothering him so much." Hugo added with a small chuckle to try to lighten up his last sentence.
He followed her towards the pier as she grabbed his arm, fattening but delicious foods, rigged games that make you spend 30 bucks for a teddy bear and a few fun rides, maybe a cheesy wish granting arcade game that will make him... what 60 would be the Big correlation... year he was old. But it all sounded good to him. He looked over to the stunning woman on his arm and gestured, "Now, I do have my favorites but since I'm trying to act older than seven, I feel like you should choose, food, rides, or games? Personally I always feel like cheap fried food should always come before rides so you get that wonderful sick to your stomach feel that brings you right back to childhood." He added sarcastically with a grin. Him and some his friends would sneak into Coney Island each summer, steal food and tickets and have a blast.
((longer than expected since I just saw a new Grimm, lol, no need to match))
