TAGGED: KAT --- SNICKERING WAS COMING FROM THE COUCH. "what are you two laughing at?" riley asked and the eyes of his brother, reed, and his daughter, tatum, peeked out from the couch. "you, bro," reed said. tatum popped herself up even higher and leaned her elbow's on the top of the couch. "daddy, you got a daaaaate." reed got up more and really looked at what riley was wearing. "dude. what are you wearing?" riley outstretched his arms and shrugged. "it's a suit. i'm going on a date." reed got up, shaking his head. "right, a date. you're not asking her to marry you. here, i'll pick out what you're going to wear." reed walked back to riley's bedroom, tatum following after him. she jumped wildly on the bed as reed pulled out a button down shirt, nice jeans, and a coat. "this is what men usually wear on first dates." reed handed over the clothes. "what would you do without me constantly preventing embarrassment on your part?" riley pointed towards the door. "you two get out of here." tatum ran out and reed followed after her. riley changed into what reed told him to put on. he ran a hand through his hair as he looked in the mirror. ok, what reed picked out it wasn't half bad. when he opened the door to his room, reed was standing right there. "unlike baby boy, i don't sleep like a rock." riley moved past reed, fully knowing where this was going. "you're implying that you are staying the night." reed shrugged and followed right behind riley. "well... regan gave me your dirty play-by-play rendezvous with your russian." riley rolled his eyes, he saw that coming. his silence prompted reed to continue. "and i just have to say, it's very chivalrous what you're doing. taking her out to eat before you screw her again. or for you, the first time, since you couldn't remember the first."
riley stopped. "reed, it's not like that. i'm not sleeping with her tonight." |
reed slapped him in the shoulder. "i bet she's one of the mail-ordered russian brides. targeted you because she thought you were rich. now she's just going out with you out of pity. because clearly she saw the other night that you are not rich." riley shook his head. "do you hear yourself right now?" riley went back out to the kitchen. "what you watching out there tate?" he asked her, watching her watching tv. "i'm watching 'tangled' right now. but then, i'm going to watch 'cinderella', then i'm going to watch 'little mermaid' and then..." riley looked over to reed, "looks like you re going to have a fantastic night." reed rolled his eyes. "hey tate, how 'bout we watch something real." tate looked at the two of them "like what?" reed shook his head and hopped onto the couch. "like 'transformers'." riley grabbed his keys and started heading towards the door. "are there any princesses in it?" tatum asked. "ok guys, i'm heading out." he said. tatum screamed at the top of her lungs that she loved him before she asked reed what kind of princesses were in transformers. "hot ones," reed said right as riley shut the door to his apartment. even if reed was not exactly the best guy to be around right now with her addiction to alcohol, one thing riley could trust him with was tatum. he wished tatum was around him all the time because she brought out the fun reed. the one everyone wanted to remember. but riley was really looking forward to going out tonight with kat. despite everything reed was telling him earlier, riley liked kat. she seemed like someone he would want to be around. though in all honesty, he wasn't taking her out tonight in hopes that he would get with her again in the romantic sense. for him, he didn't remember, so for him, it was just like he was going out with her again. though, he might not have remembered, it was a lingering thought in his mind because she did. he had been nervous when he called her to officially ask her on a date. and he still was surprised when she said yes. so he was going to take her to one of the new italian restaurants, little italy, that had no relation to some of his family members from his mother's side, that participated in illegal activities. or, "allegedly." but everyone liked pasta, right? some of the other teachers at the academy told him he should take her there because it was really authentic italian food. riley drove down to the inferno and got out at the valet parking. he drove towards the end and asked one of the valets if he could just wait by the car and he would be out in a few minutes, he was just picking someone up. the valet said sure and riley ducked inside the main lobby of the hotel. walking up to the front desk, he told the receptionist to call ekaterina novikova's room because riley was there. the receptionist nodded and called her and then riley just waited for her to come down. when she did come down, riley smiled at her. he kissed her on cheek when she was standing in front of him. "you look beautiful," he told her. [/div] LET YOU HAVE YOUR WAY WITH ME

TEMPLATE BY KHRISTIAN @ CAUTION 2.0, LYRICS BY SAFETYSUIT

it was official. ekaterina novikova was going insane. that had to be the only explanation for why she was agreeing to this in the first place and liking the idea. yes she needed a cover but said cover didn't have to be someone she exactly got along with. fuck wasn't life going to be better if she actually had no attachment to her mark in the first place and could drop him like a bad habit the minute she didn't need him anymore? because kat was quickly starting to figure out that this wasn't going to be the case with riley and his kid. fact of the matter was that even after spending the useless half of one night at his place, waking up next to him, letting him think he'd somehow miraculously drunkenly screwed her brains out, and then watching made breakfast for her she still liked these two. for some strange, unknown reason she wanted to see him again and she might even take a crack at playing with that little kid. it wasn't like there had been any kind of earth shaking leaps and bounds made in that initial meeting either. nothing out of the ordinary had been said to really peak her interest but nevertheless she had agreed to see him when he'd called her up and asked her to and she had actually smiled while considering it. heck she hadn't even given him a lot of time to sweat it over. she had simply said yes and mostly due to immediate reaction. she had wanted to see him and had wanted to spend some time with him in a way that she couldn't quite put her finger on.
and ever still she had gone around most of the day excited for this little event to happen. maybe it was for curiosity's sake. maybe she just wanted to see him outside his element. after all it hadn't been easy to get a super decent knock on this guy what with him being blackout drunk and waking up partially sober next to her in the morning with a little kid to worry about. maybe she was curious to see just what he would be like with a night of no rules and no responsibilities. was he really as straight edged as she had pegged him to be in the first place and if he was, was that something he could easily be persuaded to go against or was it only with tons of booze in his system that he would go a little crazy? it was all a big question and kat was going to start finding out some answers tonight. to top it all off she was planning on having a little fun. why the hell not right? this was a date after all. she had all the lies to cover the bases about family and whatnot and why she was living in valkyrie and why she was living in valkyrie alone. she had answers to everything and that wasn't the problem. the problem was seeing him outside of all that and just what it was going to be like. she wanted to test him because if he gave way in the slightest then he was worth giving the extra time. this was going to be a night of multiple answers no matter what.
she'd kind of been looking forward to this all day for a few reasons, one, she was just plain excited which was something that was beginning to irk her. two, she was wondering who he'd get to watch that little girl and wondering just how crazy it was at his place as he got ready. it was strange. she usually didn't think this way. hell it was a rarity for katerina to even give a crap about anything other than herself. she'd thought she was completely dead inside and one of those types of people to actually had to initiate real, human emotions when the time was right. usually she would remain deadpan and no one would know whether or not she was all there up top but things had changed now or at least they were beginning to. kat could feel a hint of excitement and she could feel her body unexpectedly smiling on occasion. it was strange and it felt completely foreign but at the same time it was a nice change to not only have a smile on her face as her family's blood was dripping in ribbons off her body. oh if only riley really knew the person he was taking to dinner but then again if he had known he sure as hell wouldn't have given her the time of day. she could see it now. even in his drunken state the moment he realized she was a mass murderer he would have gotten up from his spot at the bar next to her and would have stumbled back to some stripper. why did that bother her so?
kat was just methodically picking up her makeup and putting it back into her case when the hotel phone rang. "show time." she said as she walked out of the bathroom and answered the phone. she'd already known what the woman on the other end of the line was going to say but she wasted a few seconds of her life to listen regardless. "mhm." she said simply before clicking the receiver in place. she grabbed her mini and slid it onto her body, the dress being the only thing her body was missing at this point, and grabbed a cropped leather jacket to go over top that. once clothed she was ready to go and grabbed a clutch with all her necessities in it before heading to the elevator. she stepped out of a crowd of people as they hit the lobby, happy to be free from the mindless chatter as her eyes focused in on her target. she walked right up to him, baring a slight smile as he kissed her on the cheek and told her what she already knew. somehow though she liked his words. "thank you. you look great too." she took his hand and lead him out of the lobby, being the type of woman to take charge. she recognized his car as the one she'd had to help him into a few nights ago and stopped by the passengers side as the valet opened up the door for her. "spasiba" she said lightly under her breath as a little thank you as she slid into the passenger’s seat and waited for riley to hop in as well. "you hungry?" she asked as he slipped into place and pulled away from the hotel.

TAGGED: KAT --- WAS HE NERVOUS? the way his breath hitched when she came into his view, or the clammy feeling along his hands were surely signs of nervousness. he was twenty seven dammit, a grown man. suddenly, he felt like he was back in high school trying to impress the prom queen. everything was different now, though. he was an adult and riley found in alarming he had to continually remind himself of that. he had been out on the dating loop for a very, very long time. even before tatum, he was just focused on getting his teaching degree. and it wasn't like he dated coco or liz, and after coco left, riley just focused all of his attention on his daughter. his schedule left little room for getting into any kind of relationship. he wanted to change that, he did. he wanted someone that he got along with, and that tatum got along with most importantly. but kat just had this way of making him feel like sixteen again.
riley wiped his hand on his pants right before she took it and led him out of the lobby. either she was eager to go out with him, or eager to get it over with. riley was hoping on the former. she spotted his car right away and pulled him towards the end of the valet. at first, he wondered how she knew what car was his. well, duh, because he was so beyond inebriated, he probably would have killed himself if he got behind the wheel that night. the valet opened the door for her and riley hopped in on the driver's side and drove off, navigating through the slightly busy hotel traffic. she asked if he was hungry. "yeah," he told her, his nerves were killing half of his apettite though. "italian still good?" he asked her heading towards the main street where the restaurant was located. riley wasn't planning on talking about the other night. she said everything he needed to hear the morning when they woke up. he wanted to start fresh. he knew he acted like a blubbering idiot when he was talking to her at the bar, so he wanted to really get to know her tonight. he felt like he drank and filled her with his entire life story with tatum and the absent coco that he didn't know much about her besides that well... she was russian, and he kind of liked her. obviously, because he was asking her out again. when kat had first left that morning, it wasn't long before not only did reed catch wind of it, but his college friends were calling him asking him if he was still alive. and riley simply said he somehow brought a girl back to his place. they of course, laughed and couldn't believe that golden boy brought back a girl. he was pissed that they didn't stop him from leaving the strip club. apparently, he had been asking a stripper why she stripped minutes before leaving saying he needed to call someone. it was always strange having to hear what people said you did when you didn't remember.
of course, reed made him feel like a total girl when he asked when she should call kat out on a real date. he didn't know if he should do that supposed three day wait. reed said that that was ridiculous because one, she was from russia and they probably aren't chickenshits like the americans. two, from what regan told him, the girl was hot and you don't hold out on a hot girl, and three, riley was a grown man and not in high school. so... the brothers decided to call two days later. yeah, the irish boys were dumb but that call got him here in the car with her. they made common small talk about their day during the short ride to the restaurant. riley managed to get a parking spot on the street and got out of his side and hurried over to her side to open the door for her. "this place just opened up," he told her. "only good things had been said about it." riley had the feeling that since the restaurant was new, he might need to make reservations in advance so they didn't have to wait around for a table. so, after he had disconnected with kat he called the place up and scheduled a reservation for 7:15. riley did all the good things, opened the door for her and guided her to the host's post. "you have reservations, sir?" riley nodded, "yeah. turner?" the host looked down at his book and nodded and looked back up at them. "turner for two. right this way." riley looked around. good thing he did do the reservations. there was already some couples and a family that were waiting to get seated. good thing he checked all his bases.
they were seated in a table for two in the middle of the restaurant. and a server immediately came over with some red wine. he poured them each a glass and said he'd let them look over the menu. once they were alone, riley looked up from the menu, "this is ok, right?" maybe he was unsure, but he wanted to impress her that he wasn't a drunk, single dad, and that he actually was a decent human at some things. "though, i don't quite remember, i have a feeling that all i did was talk about myself the other night. so, what about you? you said work brought you to valkyrie? what kind of work?"

katerina had never gone through anything like this so she really didn't know what to expect. what she didn't think we going to hit her was the nerves. katerina had practically never been nervous about anything in her life. this was a woman who made a living out of being a stone cold killer, doing what other people asked her to, and making, dealing, and stealing bombs. this wasn't the type of woman who would get nervous going on a date with some nobody who she was willing to use as a cover. none of this seemed right but at the same time a selfish portion of katerina didn't want to let him go. this was fun, this was certainly interesting, and she was already half way in with this cover thing. she'd been to his house and he already thought he was sleeping with her even if that wasn't really the case. it didn't matter. she was already a portion of the way in and getting out now only to find a cover she did find emotionally detached and suitable was going to take much longer than she cared to invest in the subject. she had her eyes on him, she had her nails in him, and that was good enough for kat to be happy. plus it wasn't as though she was hearing any complaints from his end. riley seemed more than happy to be taking her out tonight which was something kat wouldn't usually consider cute, but did. heartfelt and cutesy little things never really tugged at her heartstrings before to the point where kat figured there was no realy heart to tug anything from. she'd always been considered heartless. it had pretty much been her mark to be able to go in and do anything she needed to do without the interference of some conscience of sorts. the only time her conscience had ever interfered with anything was when she had debated shooting her sister and though it hadn't ended well, seeing as how svetty wanted nothing to do with her, she was still justified in knowing that what she'd done was right. she hadn't killed someone who didn't deserve it.
problem was she had known svetty all her life. she had grown up knowing the girl and knew that she wasn't in the slightest bit capable of anything her parents had been blamed for. svetlana had been an innocent simply caught in the crossfire and kat had known that which gave her ample argument for when she'd been confronted about leaving a witness behind. still kat knew that what she'd done was right because she'd been around svet all her life and she knew that she'd done very little that needed to be judged so harshly. could the same be said for riley? she was going into this date with a similar approach. sure riley was not her sister and she was very glad for that but she was treating the situation like he was an innocent with absolutely nothing to hide when the fact of the matter was that she didn't know all that much about him. she didn't know that his hands were completely clean and just because he had a daughter and lived the golden life didn't mean that he didn't have some sort of past, one of which that kat really didn't know about. it was possible that they were more similar than they thought but at the same time whenever kat looked at riley she just couldn't see it. she couldn't see this man as being capable of some of the things she'd done or feeling that kind of smear on your soul one felt whenever you took a life. who really knew but she just couldn't see it. this nervous wreck in front of her didn't appear to be a killer like she was. she stopped letting her mind wander as her ears registered riley's voice. she couldn't step back into her usual detached mode around him. around riley she had to be ever vigilant because he wanted to get to know her. that all tended to start in the car ride over. "italian sounds fine." she said with a smile as they pulled out onto the street and headed toward their destination.
kat scanned her surroundings at they landed at the restaurant, watching riley high-tail it around the car so that he could open the passenger door for her. kat was ashamed to say that she found it absolutely endearing that he would do such a thing. she took his hand and stepped out of the car, listening to him speak in the process. "well then i suppose we'll have to see for yourselves then." she said with a smile as they stepped across the street and into the building. once inside kat was hit with a wave of delicious and foreign smells, all heavy with cream and cheese and pasta. it would be a carb-fest tonight for sure and it had been a long while since kat's last carb binge. she stood relatively silent, if not too silent, as riley engaged the hostess and got them their table, her arm linked in his as they followed after the woman. kat sat perpendicular to him at the table. it was closer so she didn't have to talk across the table and it was nicer to be closer to him than it was to be closer to the flow of waiter traffic. as they were seated they were greeted by their waiter with two glasses of red wine. well that would do her just fine. as she held the glass and spun it in her hand she heard riley speak. had she been too quiet? "this is wonderful riley. thank you." she said as she reached out to him with her free hand and gave his thigh a little squeeze of encouragement. she took a sip and tasted the wine, setting her glass back down with a nod as riley asked her another question. kat smiled at the memory of the club. he had talked about himself but that had been the idea. he didn't have to remember it that way though. "i work for the government." she said, letting him pick which government she worked for which usually lead him to the u.s. one. let him think that. "honestly, i can't really tell you what i do." she said with a chuckle in a mock whisper. "and you? other than being what i can see as a terrific dad, what do you do for a living?"

TAGGED: KAT --- RILEY was more of a beer guy, but he tried the wine anyway because it was... italy. and they were in an italian restaurant and it seemed fitting. he felt her hand on his thigh, squeezing it a little, pretty much telling him that he was doing fine. so, he was sure his nervousness was hitting her in waves. even though he was twenty seven, he had permission to get nervous on a date. he wasn't necessarily a pro at this. case in point liz and coco. even the ones that followed them, which could be counted on less than a hand, he was still equally nervous. despite being the oldest turner boy, the one that was the golden boy, the role model, riley was still the shy one of the three. reed was always so obnoxiously loud and regan did anything reed did, so that was two loud brothers and then riley, who always just passed his shyness off as his focus. and, of course, he was also the sensitive one of the three. always caring about everyone else, in tune with his feelings and all that great stuff that made him his mother's son. even if some of his attributes were slightly embarrassing to admit, he was proud to say he was mature and responsible and being able to raise tatum as a single dad was a pretty good accomplishment this far. he still had a long ways to go since she was only five, but he had such a good handle on it that he felt pretty good about the years to come.
the years to come. since tatum was born, he had to look at dating another way. he wasn't just trying to find something he really liked and being around, his number one priority was fining someone that got along with tatum. he wasn't asking this someone to be her mother, but someone that tatum could look up to. someone riley could trust leaving tatum with. of course, it didn't seem too hard to find someone that liked kids. tatum was cute and riley wasn't completely hopeless. he'd get looks of 'awww' at the grocery store as tatum stood in the cart directing riley what cereal to get and what fruit snacks she liked best. or at the park where they'd play 'sand monster' and riley would be the sand monster over and over again. women would come up to him with their own kids telling him how adorable tatum was. they wouldn't come up to him if he was being a bad dad, right? so riley just always took it as a compliment. he's was doing as bad as some days he thought he was.
"i work for the government." she told him. he eyes brows lifted in that 'oh?' face and he was about to ask her doing what but she spoke again before he could ask. "honestly, i can't really tell you what i do." riley knew she wasn't joking, so he didn't say anything. must be something secret. well, the government seemed like a "good," occupation, more or less. never met someone that worked for the government. he assumed the united states government, even if she was clearly russian. he learned from movies that brought other people in all the time. even if he had to take those kind of movies with a grain of salt, there was always some truth to it. a few days ago when he was asking her out on this date, she did mention that work had brought her here and she was hoping she'd stay here. it made sense... a little. those government people were always able to move around, that probably was the same deal with her as well.
"and you? other than being what i can see as a terrific dad, what do you do for a living?" riley laughed a little and took another sip of the wine. "nothing nearly as interesting as you," he said before adding, "i teach english at the academy here in valkyrie." it did sound so average, but at least he enjoyed his job. riley couldn't really remember why he wanted to become a teacher. maybe it was by the time he was a senior at the academy, he was wondering what the hell he wanted to go to school for. he was decent in sports. he started for both football and basketball, but he wasn't one of those athletes that was going to go to college to play ball. he was good, but not that good. besides, he didn't even want to continue sports in college. he enjoyed it because it had kept him fit, he was with his friends, and he liked to win. what he did like though was school, oddly enough. he did like literature which helped him decide sort of what he wanted to do, and eventually, he just thought he could be a teacher. his brothers laughed, his parents were surprised, but he went to ucla for a couple years in the education path, then transferred back to vu for the remaining to years to student teach and graduate. things had gotten bad with reed back then too, so riley felt like he should come back to valkyrie to be with his family and help reed.
the waiter came back and asked what the wanted to eat, and riley ordered some spaghetti, because it was an italian restaurant. after kat ordered an the waiter left again riley asked, "so have you been in america long?i moved here with my family when i was thirteen. i don't know what it is, but this place sure has a hold on people, so you have been warned." he smiled, and it was true. riley left, came back. reed has wanted to leave, but never has been able to. regan left, but came back as well. coco left... and well, she was still gone. eh, another thing he should apologize for. 'by the way. i'm really sorry if i was blubbering about coco the other night. tate's mom left her when she was around two... so it's been a little hard on us, even though it's been a few years now."

katerina knew that not telling him the truth was in the best interest for him. for one thing it would have been highly illogical. tell your cover that you're actually a bombs expert? well there were ways to get around that. maybe she could have said that she worked that sort of thing for the federal government but all in all it just seemed to farfetched. sure she was a munitions expert but to say that she just had a job in the government and that it was highly classified was enough to intrigue him but know that he couldn't really ask her much about it. riley seemed the curious type but never when it came to pushing boundaries which was why she felt it was okay to tell him anything in the first place. riley was easy to get along with and one of the reasons why was because though he asked a lot of questions, he didn't pry. he wasn't looking to word the same question five million ways til sunday until you accidentally fessed up. he wasn't looking to know every little intimate detail of your life right off the bat. he wanted to get to know you over time and that was what kat was finding to be the most appealing right now. she liked that he could settle for a vague answer and move on from there. she liked that he didn't push and that the pressure with him was far less. basically she just liked him. kat didn't really know why she had settled on riley that night at the bar but it had been one of the best decisions she'd made. he was the perfect cover and mostly because he was so carefree. of course he was a thrill to be around and he was great with his daughter but he didn't need to know what was going on every second of every day. he hadn't needed to try and find some proof that they'd slept together. he had just taken her word as truth and let that be that. he had been happy, well probably not that happy, to let her word be the truth and didn't need something else to tell him what he thought he already knew.
katerina figured it was because he didn't know who she truly was that he didn't question her. if he'd known her to be the vile, heartless killer that she was well then he would have questioned everything and would have likely politely demanded she leave his house at once. that would have been disappointing. she was really starting to enjoy his company and probably a little too much so. it wasn't likely to be a good thing that she got this comfortable in a situation that was so new. they had just started "dating" in the first place. she shouldn't feel this comfortable to begin with. wasn't really her fault. he made it far too easy for her to feel that way about him. he was just so happy. kat could tell that he'd been through a lot in his life. he'd had a lot of stress and he'd dealt with a lot of pain but he still came out of it all with a positive attitude which was far less what kat could say. her family had done the russians wrong and she'd not only turned them in but she had taken them out one by one. she wasn't exactly the poster child for forgiveness. riley though appeared to be so. kat had a feeling that if the mother of tatum was to magically reappear that riley would welcome her back for the sake of his child. she had no doubt that he might be a little reluctant to do so and certainly reluctant to let her back into his heart but that he wouldn't be able to fight it after long enough. if the mother looked like she was back for good riley would put up with it for the sake of his daughter and after long enough would just forgive and forget. he was a good man and it was in his nature to be forgiving. kat actually envied him for his ability to do so because she so lacked the capacity to do so.
"i wouldn't say it was interesting. government jobs are ninety-nine percent less dramatic then they're made out to be in television shows and books. trust me." she said as she added to the lie. whatever. she made it convincing if nothing else. "see now that's daring. shaping the mind of annoying, hormonal teenagers? you're the one who deserves a pat on the back." kat said with a smile. it wasn't average. it took a special brand of person to deal with the likes of that day in and day out and kat admired him for doing so. the waiter interrupted them and kat had to fight the urge to give him the death glare as she picked something to eat, angel hair pasta in a four cheese sauce. sounded good enough for her. "a few months, but i plan on sticking around. i'm starting to like it here." she reached across the table to take his hand, giving him the best warm smile she could manage which was actually not that difficult to do, her fingers brushing over his, "you've done so great with her. she doesn't look like a child who has missed out on having a mother figure around. whatever you're doing, you're doing right. be proud of yourself riley. not everyone would have the guts to do what you've done." kat said honestly. god only knows what kind of damage she would inflict on her future, unlikely, spawn. that child would be the most profoundly screwed up in the world by far. riley was a genius. whatever in the hell he was doing was perfect seeing as how tatum was neither dead nor suffering.

TAGGED: KAT NOTES: little fast forward. hope you didn't mind. --- SHE might not think it is interesting, but the way he saw it, her russian accent was thick enough to show she lived in russia most of her life. so in his opinion, the united states must have wanted her for a reason. but she was right, riley had seen too many spy movies. it made him wonder, but he wasn't one to pry in someone's personal life. sometimes he was shaky on answering certain questions as well. she told him how his job was the most daring. he shrugged with a smile. it had been nearly ten years since he walked the halls as a student at the infamous valkyrie academy. when his family moved to america, he was thrown into high school. but it had never been just a high school. "that" kind of high school was only in the movies and tv shows. but it was parties every night, winning big at games, and all the alcohol you could get your hands onto. riley had been the slightly awkward irish boy that fell into the "in" crowd because girls found him cute and he was decent at most sports. though he was nothing like his brothers that followed into the academy, they were also pretty popular. though riley wished they didn't get as addicted as they did to the party lifestyle. riley had no idea where his thought of to become a teacher was. it sort of just made sense and when he student taught at the academy, he knew he had made the right choice because it was actually pretty good at it. it was interesting to see the different group of kids that filtered into his classes every year. riley knew he wasn't too terribly old yet, he could see a lot of his different friends in the kids sitting in front of him. people didn't change much in his opinion. personalities were recyclable. "i still get their age group. some of the other teachers sort of forget they were teenagers once too," he told her. it was true. demeaning kids didn't get them anywhere.
riley found himself frowning when she told him she was staying in valkyrie for a few months. that's it? she reassured him that she was planning on sticking around, but he knew as well as any, sometimes plans don't work out and you're forced to do what you're told. kat reached her arm across the table and touched his hand with her fingers. riley smiled and lifted his fingers to meet hers. "regardless, we'll have to make the most of it then." despite his nervousness he had at the beginning of the night, he thought that the date was going really well. and it seemed like she really liked him as well. it was always nice to here from someone else that they thought he was doing a great job with tatum. raising her as a single parent was tough and he always believed he was doing a decent job, but it reassured him when he heard it from someone else. "thanks. my family's half the reason though. helping me out when i need it." when coco left, help from her family sort of stopped there. they were never really happy about riley getting coco pregnant. rightfully so though. but wanting to see or help their granddaughter out, riley would never have objected to that. tatum did deserve to know the other half of her family. "her mother and i were never together," he explained to kat. "we just sort of..." he stopped for a moment and chuckled, trying to word what he wanted to say. "we ended being friends to raise tatum. it worked for awhile. and then well... here i am." it was always weird how coco and he were able to remain friends through everything they went through. he had people telling him something would happen or they couldn't be friends, but they proved everyone wrong. they had actually developed a very strong friendship. riley thought they were going to be able to make everything work. they were confident that they could remain friends and raise their daughter while also having relationships of their own.
the waiter came back with their food and riley let go of her hand. they continued to talk about an array of different things, and the more they talked the more riley thought running into her drunk off his ass had been a good thing for him. he wasn't expecting them to hit it off as well as they were, especially since they slept together first and then decided to try and get to know each other. he laughed at different things she said and riley even got her to smile a few different times. when the check came, he didn't pay right away because they were still talking and he knew that awkward moment in the night was coming up and riley knew he was probably going to get nervous in typical riley fashion. when he did finally pay and tip the waiter, riley led kat out of the restaurant, hand-in-hand. the night had all the signs to lead up to them going back to someone's room and sleeping together, and riley would very much like to remember the other night, but it still hadn't come back to him. "i'll take you back to the inferno," he decided to say. no, he was doing this different. he drove back to the inferno and before he pulled into the opening entrance, he parked along the curb. "look, we could do back to your room and believe me, i want to," he explained and turned to look at her. "but i really like you, so... i think we should wait," he finished with a nod, their heads unknowingly growing closer int he small car.

katerina novikova surprised herself. she never thought that she would be sitting in a restaurant with a cover and having a decent, or better, time. honestly she always figured she would somehow end up alone. it wasn't hard to let her train of thought lead to that inevitable conclusion really because kat could think of a million reasons why that much would be true. first and foremost she was a killer. people such as herself weren't meant to grow old in a happy home unless it was beside another killer. there wasn't a wide assortment of people who would find that appealing either. if she put that up on a dating website she was more likely to get a date with valkyrie p.d. then she was with someone from town. normal people just couldn't handle the real world and the real world contained a whole lot of people who would be seen as unsatisfactory. if she'd ever really cared about finding "true love" then she could have tried crimmies.com or some kind of criminal dating website. wouldn't that make tons of money! but really there weren't a lot of people who would have wanted anything to do with kat had they known who she really was. so why did riley? because everything he thought he knew about her was a total and complete lie. just about the only thing he knew to be true was her name, her only thing she hadn't cared to change. it was just too hard to go from one name to the next so she'd just stuck with what she was familiar with. it wasn't that she couldn't pull off the lie. look at her. she was a world champion liar. it was just that she hadn't cared whether or not the truth come out. so what if riley found out? he'd run for the hills, maybe tell the cops who she was, but kat had yet to do anything really illegal in valkyrie. at the most they call in the feds and then she had to go into hiding for a while. she was a dangerous broad. even the feds couldn't come into valkyrie without a well-devised tactical plan and all that, something that would take a long, long time to figure out and by then kat would know what was going on. was she cocky about her smarts? you bet your ass. but that didn't mean that she didn't still look out for numero uno. there was never a time in life when kat wasn't thinking about herself over anyone else.
but really the only people who were ever supposed to find her attractive were those of the same make up, those of the same species. yes if you got technical there was only one species of human, but that didn't mean that they weren't classed differently. besides it wasn't the the physical being that was under question, the type was. there were individuals who were sane. these were your everyday type of humans who fainted at the sight of blood and lived their life in a happy bubble of normality. they were the type who shook in fear or pissed themselves when they faced the barrel of a loaded gun or caught sight of a dead body. they were the type who always joked about making money illegally but never had the balls to do it. instead they worked themselves to the bone and never enjoyed one moment of relaxation. they were approximately 99.9% of the human population, at least in the states. then there was the other breed, the rarer breed. those who weren't afraid to let their moral compass point a hair south in order to get ahead in life. they were the diehard criminals and rule breakers who didn't do so out of desperation but did so for the entertainment factor. they were the ones excited at the thought of shedding blood or who got pissed off when a gun was pointed in their direction. they were people like katerina and the mass of russians that she worked for. the psychotic sons of bitches who saw life as a series of challenges that had to be won, all of her competitor's dreams crushed in the process.
they'd chatted and finally were ready to go. kat really had no plans for him after the dinner. whatever happened, happened which was certainly out of the norm for katerina who was a major planner. still she wasn't sure she would have cared what his decision was though she had to admit as they pulled up to the inferno and he said goodnight in a manner that didn't include anything outside of the car, she was a little disappointed. she'd had fun and she didn't want it to be over so quickly. "you surprise me riley." kat said with a smirk as he faced her, telling her they should wait, "one drunken night does not make me that kind of girl." the smile on her face made the joke come across. she didn't want him freaking out on her. "but, if you insist." still she wanted to tempt fate. she wanted to see what he would do if she kissed him. so she did just that, leaning in and gently brushing her lips against his one moment, fiercely kissing him the next as her fingers gripped the hair at the base of his neck and held him against her hungry lips. she was a woman who got what she wanted after all, none of which lent itself to her being a meek, shy kisser.

TAGGED: KAT NOTES: mmm --- IT was true, riley didn't really want the night to end either. he knew that the first date had gone really well, and that was a good sign because now he wanted to see her again. kat was a woman he could see himself getting into a serious relationship with. she had already unknowingly passed the first test, which was getting along with tatum. tatum very much liked kat and riley would never end up with someone that didn't get along with his daughter. he thought about tate, who was probably still watching a movie with reed, or maybe she had capped out and was sleeping while reed watched the movie. reed was expecting his older brother to either bring kat back to the apartment or just not come back and spend the night at kat's place. riley was actually surprised reed hadn't texted him once with words of encouragement because he wouldn't put it pass either of his brothers to make this first date such a big deal. or maybe they were just excited that even if he hooked up with her, he liked her enough to take her out. as everyone knew, riley didn't really date. he didn't really hook-up either. he was just so busy working at raising tate. he knew other single parents could balance it, but tatum was going through those crucial child years, and he felt like his attention should be on her first. not to mention coco left out of the blue. that also was a setback in many ways as there were readjustments and he wanted to make sure tatum was doing ok with that. she seemed better about it now. even though riley knew coco was out there somewhere tatum had recently started talking about coco in the past tense, like she died. sometimes when he'd be reading her a story before she went to sleep, she'd asked for a story about coco. and riley really had no idea what to say. sure, they had been really good friends, but in high school she was... yeah. so he tried to focus on those couple years before she left or a couple of the funny stories when she had been pregnant like the time she made riley do that pregnant yoga thing with her and riley had provided most of the physical comedy for the entire class because he had just been terrible at it.
as they sat in his car at the inferno, it was hard for him to say no, since he did want to go to her room with her, and he was even second guessing. maybe he should have said yes. at least he knew she had been thinking the same thing. "you surprise me riley." he smiled and shrugged at the same time. "hopefully in the good way? he offered with a small laugh. he nodded towards her when she said she wasn't that kind of girl, but she was smiling, so he knew she was just joking with him. maybe if he was noticing that he was leaning it, he would have known his body wanted a completely different thing that what she was telling him. and then her lips brushed his and he was surprised. before riley could process it, her hands gripped his neck. his hands found their way around her back, pulling her towards him as best he could in the small car. since he couldn't remember the night he took her home, it felt like he was kissing her for the first time. and if this was what it was like a few days ago, then he must have definitely enjoyed it. one of riley's hands started to get tangled in her hair as they pressed closer together. he unbuckled his seat belt when he noticed that it had been restraining him. his breathing started to grow haggard as his lips tried keeping up with hers. there was another little minor adjustment on his part before his hand started traveling up her leg and the hem of her dress brushed against his knuckles.
that was where his mind finally caught up with his actions and he remembered that he had just told her he wasn't going to do that because he liked her too much. well sure, it was nothing more than a good make out in his car, but something heated definitely would grow to something else. and that was where he didn't want to go. well, he did, but not tonight. "wait, wait," he said pulling away. he laughed nervously and looked out the front window. he was contemplating whether to just say fuck it and go park the car. but five seconds later he turned back to her and said, "i think we should wait. i like you, ekaterina. and i want to get to know you more." riley was hoping that he wasn't ruining things now. but he just didn't want kat to think that he was only interested in her for the sex. "can i call you again?"

katerina wasn't at all surprised when he responded to her kiss. it had been exactly what she was looking for. she hadn't really kissed him at all the night riley thought they "slept together". really she'd helped him into the house, yanked off all his clothes, and fell asleep next to him so this was like that virgin moment for her as well. she had wanted to kiss him though. originally he was just a mark but he was beginning to mean a whole hell of a lot more to kat. she wasn't supposed to feel this way after a few days and one date either. honestly this whole situation rubbed her the wrong way. she didn't like having these feelings. she had gone about living her life totally void of feelings. that was one of the reasons why letting svetlana live had been such a big shock to anyone who knew her, was still alive, and had heard about what happened. everyone thought she was a stone cold killng machine and that was the way they were supposed to feel about her. they were supposed to think of her as a killing machine. they were supposed to fear looking at her funny at the risk that she would want to see their insides on their outside. she was beginning to learn that maybe underneath all the layers of ice that there might be a heart in there and that concerned kat. she didn't need a heart. she was good having little to no faith in anyone but herself and her boss. hell the only reason kat answered to staz in the first place was because he was her boss. if he hadn't been she would have just seen him as some other snot nosed brat who thought himself a entitled to some kind of special treatment. had he been anyone else kat would have found tremendous pleasure in putting him in his place. it would have been the highlight of her day.
unfortunately riley and his little girl were putting a whole new line of sight in her perspective. she didn't like it. it didn't sit well with her. it made her stomach turn and made her question things. she didn't like questioning her motives. she didn't like questioning her job. and yet here she was, practically in riley's lap with his hand on her ass and she wasn't thinking one bit about the job at hand or that she wasn't supposed to get attached to her cover. she was making rookie mistakes which was also driving her mad. kat was methodical. she was practiced. she was the stone cold killing machine everyone feared her to be and yet here she was making the mistake of a first year. this was ridiculous and yet she couldn't help herself. though she kissed him back, inside she was reeling. even as she kissed him she knew the mistakes she was making. kissing him wasn't the problem. if he was a proper cover that she wanted to keep around for more than five minutes she would have to at some point kiss him. the problem wasn't kissing him, it was what kissing him was doing to her. it was the warm, tingly, excited sensation that she felt when she did so and the desire to yank the key from his engine and tell riley he wouldn't be going home until he went upstairs with her and made her totally and completely satisfied. she even found her hand stretching out for the key but caught herself and retracted her hand. riley was too busy to notice, thankfully. she sat back a little, her eyelids so heavy she had to will them open. her lips stung from kissing him so vigorously and his lips mirrored her own, with a smear of her makeup from nose to chin. kat reached out and brushed her thumb over his chin, cleaning him up a little as he fought to speak.
"good answer." she said in a husky voice, giving his cheek a little pat. kat sat back in her seat, stretching the moments before she finally gave him an answer as she tugged her dress back into place and picked up a few items that had spilled from her clutch as he'd dragged her across the car. kat had to admit the whole caveman thing was a turn on. she'd remember that when she was trying to sleep tonight. once she was all packed up kat threw open her door, still having not given him an answer. she leaned in and kissed him hungrily once again, biting his bottom lip and giving it a little tug before she sat back, her eyes locked on his. "you better call me tomorrow." she said confidently as she kissed him again and backed out of the car. she closed the door and wiped her lips as she walked away. she fought the urge to look back and see what kind of state he was in but lost. just as she reached the lobby doors kat turned around to take a look back at riley, giving him a little wave. boy she certainly would miss him in her bed tonight.
