VALKYRIE, CALIFORNIA, THE VALKS, WYRNN’S APARTMENT, JANUARY 2012
-----being back in valkyrie, california was like some dream come true. unlike her first hometown, valkyrie had been the place where everything had seemed to go right for carly. it was like getting up and moving from keizer some six years ago had been the refresh button on her life. suddenly things started working for her. she’d made friend again, she’d started a job that had inspired her dream, and she’d gotten used to being around people again unlike in keizer where she’d been secluded, alone, and depressed. valkyrie had washed every bit of that away like a long overdue shower that she’d needed. now things were so much better despite the things that had happened to the town itself. carly had to admit that valkyrie was a mess. the earthquake that had happened on january 7th had devastated the town as a whole. roads were now under construction, houses were reduced to rubble, and people had suffered loss everywhere you turned. yes the place was indeed begging for a fixer upper but even that couldn’t dampen carly’s spirits, as sad as that may have sounded. carly would admit she’d been lucky. her parents had been in one of the worst-hit places in town. even after she’d moved away and become famous her parents had still chosen to live in the shaks because, well because they could. carly may have been famous and may have offered to buy them a house in a better location in town but charles and emilia had liked their current home and hadn’t wanted to let it go. carly had been amazed no one in her family had gotten hurt that day, seeing as how the focal point of the quake was not far from her home, only a few short miles, but thankfully everyone walked away with only minor injuries. her father had fractured one of his fingers and they were both beaten up pretty badly but no one had died. that meant the world to carly.
-----the day it had happened, boy that was a day carly wasn’t soon going to forget. she’d been at home in her new york apartment, sitting around after a long day’s work the previous day. lily had been at preschool so she was just lounging about enjoying the quiet and watching some televisions show that, to this day, she wouldn’t be able to remember. all of a sudden a news brief interrupted her show talking about the quake that hit california. carly hadn’t been hugely concerned until the little red button pointing out the city was located in the exact location of valkyrie. then her heart pounded in her chest and her ears rung and she’d run to the phone scrambling to dial familiar numbers. her parents hadn’t answered at first and carly had been a wreck for over four hours until her parents had managed to find one of their cell phones in the rubble and call carly. it was the greatest moment of her short life to hear her parents on the other end of that phone. carly had gotten updates on nate and penny, who were in the area, and got an update on her parent’s condition and the condition of the house. carly immediately had called the inferno and had rooms reserved for her family, and one for herself, then ordered a plane ticket into los angeles. there was no way she was going to be staying in new york while her family went through something like this. so she packed up her things, packed up lily’s things, called her agent and her realtor and made all the arrangements she needed to because she was going home, much to the dismay of her business associates.
-----she’d been in valkyrie since the 9th, when she’d flown into los angeles and drove the short two hours into valkyrie. the traffic hadn’t been horrific and the coast guard and military that she’d spoken to had been surprisingly helpful. all in all she hadn’t expected to have been able to get in right away but she had. she’d been able to find the back roads to the inferno, parked her car, and went up to see her family. everything since that point had been cake. she knew there was no going back at this point. valkyrie was her home more so than any other place had ever been. her parents needed her, the family needed her, and most of all she just needed to be here. anything above that was moot. this place was her home and there was no way someone was going to keep her from being here now. besides, who didn’t love california even in its quake-y destruction. somehow the place still looked like it’s old self, only slightly more run down and dirty. even one month later, the town already looked to be getting back to its old glory.
-----in that time, carly was determined to get back to all those people she’d left behind to make her dream come true. wow, sounded cheesy didn’t it? but it was true. carly had gone off and made something of herself and it was time to get back to the people she missed so much now that she was once again calling valkyrie home. wrynn giovanni was one of those people. she and carly had been relatively close back in high school when they’d been dubbed the ‘trio 2.0’ as basically the next generation of badass bitches to roam the halls of valkyrie academy. carly hadn’t taken to it nearly as well as wrynn had. wrynn had loved the attention and was happy to rule the school in the stead of someone else. carly on the other hand had been there, done that, and wasn’t too keen on getting back to that shallow lifestyle. still in a way she’d succumbed and hadn’t corrected people when they thought of her that way, but it was more so because her friends were involved and if people wanted to call her a second generation anything? well so be it. but she’d gotten in touch with her old friend only a week or so ago, told her all about new york and about the fact that, surprise surprise!, she had a kid. since then wrynn had been asking to see them both and today was just a day that carly didn’t have anything to do. what better way to kill time then to go see an old friend right?
-----so she packed lily away in her carseat, strapped herself in, and headed to wrynn’s place in the valks. it was surprising just how different the valks looked from the shaks, and that wasn’t just because of the economical differences between the two parts of town. already the valks looked like almost nothing had happened. the valks hadn’t gotten as much of the brunt of the quake as the shaks had, they had more money for faster repairs, and quite frankly they had the connections needed to clean up their part of town first. it made getting around easier but carly had to shake her head at it all as she drove down the newly paved street to wyrnn’s apartment. once she’d found the place, carly parked, unpacked lily, and headed upstairs to find her friend’s room. once located she gave it a quick little knock, smiling down at lily to reassure her. a lot of things had changed in a very short time in that child’s life and carly was trying really hard not to overwhelm her with too much at once. hopefully seeing a friend of her mommy’s wasn’t too much of a stretch.
