--- "HOW'S CALIFORNIA, BROTHER?" sam's brother, matt, greeted him on the phone. sam was walking down the hallway of his room on the thirtieth floor of the inferno: hotel and casino. he was set up here for an extended stay for the new film he was set to work on in the next couple weeks. he was going to start working on a movie called drift about two brothers jump-starting modern-day surfing in the 70s. it was going to have some action, some romance, some self-discovery. sam was playing one of the brothers, it was going to be good. plus, all the outdoor and beach scene were going to be shot here in valkyrie, so sam knew he was going to be here for the next few months with the filming. he never actually had been to valkyrie prior to coming here to help with the earthquake relief. sam donated some money and did some public appearances, all of which his manager and publicist set up for him to do. not that he was upset or didn't want to do it. but jeez, his management team always was coming up with something for him to do.
sam put his ray bans on over his face as he reached the elevator door. "well, mattie, i'm walking outside with a t-shirt on. what is it over in the city? ten degrees?" sam's younger brother matthew lived in new york city, and had been doing so for the past several years. he was what you would call a broadway baby and he was always in the middle of some show. it was early february. he knew new york wasn't california-warm this time of year. he should know since he did call new york for a decent amount of time himself. "actually, it's fifteen degrees. i think i got a tan line." sam snorted as the elevator dinged and he stepped in. his phone beeped, signaling there was another call coming in. he first to looked to see who it was. "yo, mattie, katy perry's on the other line, i should probably take it." he heard his brother laugh. "you were never good at lying. it's mom, isn't it?" sam pressed the lobby button on the elevator. "yeah. i'll call you later." matt said goodbye and sam re-answered his phone. "hey, mom." this was what it was often like all day. he always seemed to be talking to someone. most of these people ended up being his family. what could he say? they were all a super close hollywood business family. run-of-the-mill, what could he say? "are you coming to los angeles later this week?"
the elevator dinged again and sam started to make his way through the busy lobby. "i wasn't planning on it. should i?" he heard his mother sigh. what did he do now? "you need to get fitted for the tux. we have some designer options. since you have stepped up from winning choice hottie... you can't wear a grubby t-shirt and jeans. you need to come here soon. i don't want you here the day of." sam rubbed his "grubby" t-shirt and looked down at his jeans as he walked out into the sun. "ok, ok, mom, i'll find time to come up there." he scratched the back of his head. "need you car, mr. lockhart?" sam looked over at the valet. "yes, please," he said and turned his attention back to his mom. "find time? what could possibly be keeping you so busy in valkyrie?" sam shrugged even though he knew his mother couldn't see him. "busy doing nothing. when in the past six years have i not been doing anything?" he saw his car being pulled out and he fished in his pocket for some bills. "just don't get a dui or do something absolutely ridiculous." sam smirked as he handed off thirty dollars to the valet guy and hopped into the car. "i think i can manage that. bye, mom."
sam disconnected with his mom and tossed the phone into the passenger's seat. he was surprised he hadn't heard from gabrielle yet today, or his manager, allen. about anything really, commenting on a latest rumor, seeing if he could do a talk show, an event, some photoshoot. it was all he heard from them for so long, it could make his head spin. however, sam wasn't one of those celebrities that hated every minute of well... being a "celebrity." sam like doing interviews, he likes signing autographs and taking pictures with fans, he liked going to charity events, movie premieres, anything really. he really did enjoy the "public" part of the life. but like he told his mother, he wanted to be busy doing nothing right now. and if that was taking the car out to take a drive downtown to really explore valkyrie, he would. sam hadn't really gotten a chance to go downtown yet. it from the inferno, it didn't really take that long until he was cruising along main street. he was a little hungry, so he parked along the side of the street and got out. looking for something other than starbucks. sam walked until he spotted a small cafe with an outdoor seating area right along the sidewalk. hm, looked good to him. he walked up to the host podium and the guy looked at him. then took a double take. probably trying to place him. it wasn't like sam was going to be like "yes, i'm that guy." he wasn't a tool. "how many?" "just me." he said. and he was led to a table. sam ordered a sandwich and had some water in front of him. the person before him left the daily paper on the seat so sam decided to read that while waiting for his food. people walked and moseyed on by the sidewalks, talking to who they were with, or by themselves on their way to somewhere. sam still blended in quite well. he was reading an article about the earthquake when he heard to familiar voices. that's when he looked up and no more than three feet from him were carly sutton and her daughter, lily. "carly!" he said and got up, putting the paper on the table. "strange seeing you here," he said half-joking as he smiled at her. he did know she did live here afterall.

"no. no no no. i already told you angie that i'm not going back to new york. this place is my home and it's a short drive from los angeles. that should be good enough for you. you know i'll go anywhere i need to should the moment demand it but i'm basing myself out of valkyrie now. if you don't like that i'll find someone else." |
this was not the kind of call carly liked taking. first and foremost she was out with her daughter and all she wanted was to spend some time with lily because it seemed like all she was doing lately was hiding away in her hotel room at the inferno, just waiting for the guillotine to fall and lop of her head. over dramatic? well maybe, but that was what it felt like to have this hit on her life hanging over her head. it was an unusual experience by far and not something most people could say was happening to them. of course that only seemed to be the case outside valkyrie's city limits. carly had no idea that this town was as crime based as it was. growing up she hadn't the slightest clue that the people closest to her were involved or associated with the mob and quite frankly she'd been happy in her oblivion. it wasn't easy to look around the town she loved so much and see that familiar faces had the kind of ties that would put serial killers to shame. it was terrifying. so why chose to live here? especially with a hit on her head why would she chose to stay in valkyrie? because it was her home. the place may have been more infested with criminals than it was with roaches and other vermin but they'd kept it so under wraps that carly had been none the wiser until she'd had a hit put on her for running into her old best friend so...yeah she still wasn't making a decent argument for herself. if anything carly should have run for the hills. she didn't know the town was a crime-based one and she couldn't pick a criminal out of the crowd unless she'd previously been introduced to them so the likelihood that she could get shot just walking down the street was much greater simply because she didn't know what signs to look for. maybe this was a bad place for carly to stay but she didn't care. this place was her home and it meant more to her than anyone could probably come to terms with. valkyrie had been the first place to accept her after she'd moved from keizer. she had an especially big soft spot for the town because though it was a shallow, high-class town there were some amazing people in it who would rather not judge her. there were people here who had given her a chance when they shouldn't have, employed her when it was against the law, and stood by her when her past came a-calling. this was a town full of people she would rather surround herself with. sure new york was a great place to kick off and keep a dance career. sure it was a professional and business city where dreams could come true and a place to really make your dime, but it felt cold compared to valkyrie and not just in the literal sense. yes it was february here and it was at least sixty degrees while in new york there was likely still feet of snow on the ground. that was beside the point. this place was home and felt like home despite carly only having lived there a year or two before leaving. it felt more significant to her than nearly sixteen years in keizer had and that was all that mattered. and carly wanted lily to grow up here. she wanted lily to see that there were good people in the world, better people, and she'd already seen a lot of that. no one stood out to lily more, aside from sam and flynn, than the people of valkyrie. she'd taken the town by storm after carly had gotten her back and she'd knotted every one of her friend's hearts around her little pinky finger. she had everyone in her back pocket and she knew it. her friends fawned over lily and from such she had a lot of strong figures in her life. carly's mother was a little less than receptive to lily being back in their lives but carly's father and her siblings just loved her. the turners loved lily and she had an especially soft spot for regan out of the three. that little girl was everything to carly and her growing up in a town surrounded by people who loved her was the utmost important thing. if that meant living in a crime infested town, well then that was the necessity. as long as there were good quality people here in valkyrie and as long as carly felt relatively safe, well then she wanted to live here. it wasn't the most solid of argument and she knew that full well but...this place just was home. her agent's arguments were moot as far as carly was concerned and right now they were getting in the way of some mother-daughter time. she'd taken lily out to the stores downtown just hoping to get her out of the hotel room. it was cramped and it was small and hiding away there was doing nothing for either of their nerves. lily liked to be out and about as much as carly did and it was annoying being cooped up in her room because of fear. not to mention the fact that it wasn't fair to lily to hide her away in a hotel room. children needed to get out and get fresh air and embrace life and carly was sick of holding lily back. so instead of sitting around the hotel suite and waiting for some word to come about this hit, she took lily out downtown, walking hand in hand with her as they explored different stores and just got out to stretch their legs. or at least that's what they would be doing at the moment if carly's agent hadn't called to pester her about moving back to new york. "i told you weeks ago to sell that thing. it's a new york condo it should go in a heartbeat and i'm pissed off that you keep holding up any sales because you think i'm coming back. i trusted you to take care of that and you can't seem to do that. so here's the way this is going to work. you're going to shut the hell up and listen to me right now. i'm. not. moving. valkyrie is my home and it's where i'm relocating. if you don't like that you can find someone else to work with. if you're going to stick around, handle the real estate agent and get that place sold. i'm not coming back to new york but if i do you'll be the first to know. now i'm hanging up now. do what i asked you to do or so help me you'll be unemployed by the end of the week." with that carly hung up and sighed as she slid her phone back into her bag. she held lily's hand a little tighter now as they walked around, looking at clothes and just giving opinions about things they saw. "mommy? i'm thirsty." lily said as she stopped walking, adding a little give to carly's arm. "alright baby. we'll get you something from this place okay?" carly said as she looked down at the four year old who looked significantly satisfied as she nodded her head and started walking again. had to love that kid. all of a sudden carly could swear she heard her name. she looked up to see a familiar face standing a mere few feet away. "holy..." she said under her breath as the tiny hand slid from her own, lily taking off in the direction of the familiar face. "daddy!!" lily squealed as she ran to sam and jumped into his arms, her own little arms wrapping around his neck as tightly as she could. carly smiled as she walked up, definitely aware of the new spectacle they were amongst all the people meandering on the street or just perusing the stores as they had been. carly blushed slightly, her hand pushing her hair from her face as she noticed people digging out cameras. well this was sure going to make the tabloids. the carly/sam rumors had started a long time ago in new york and apparently people remembered those things. lily calling him daddy probably didn't help those rumors at all. carly walked forward, smile still on her lips as she hugged sam, giving him a little kiss on the cheek. "what on earth are you doing here?" she said slightly bewildered. the last time carly had seen sam had been a month or so ago. he'd been with her when she'd seen the news feed of the earthquake and had tried to calm her down to no avail. he'd left her place that afternoon for some business thing and she hadn't seen him since. that wasn't so much her fault though. carly had left to make sure her parents were okay but she hadn't left with the intention of not coming back. it was just...this town tended to have an effect on you. "it's so good to see you!" she said as she pointed to the chair opposite him. "mind if we join you?" kind of a silly question she was sure but lily had yet to let go of sam's neck and carly was relatively sure she wasn't planning on letting go any time soon. --- IT WAS RATHER ODD THAT SAM WAS IN VALKYRIE. sure, the city was only two hours away from los angeles, but to see a movie star just walking the streets was almost taboo. and right now, sam liked to think he was keeping a low profile. he wasn't attracting a lot of attention to himself, he was by himself, too, which always made a world of a difference. he had never been to valkyrie before this, and the city was really nice. it wasn't los angeles-big, or new york city-big, cities he was used to, but valkyrie had like this small-town feel even if it was still pretty big and established. and he already saw the beach, it looked like los angeles. technically, sam didn't need to be here right now. though filming was slated to start shooting later this month, they were still casting the remaining parts. it was sam's first break in years and he just wanted to relax a bit, read the script more to really understand his character and kind of coast for a bit.
he came to valkyrie earlier in january for the fishfry event. it was for the earthquake relief. but then he had to leave again for other hollywood business including a couple photoshoots, and parties he had to go, then there was the golden globe awards he took his sister to. sam had been nominated for supporting actor in a motion picture. though he had already been prepared he wouldn't win. sam was just so shocked he was even nominated in the first place, but when you are up against some of the hollywood greats, you don't expect anything. then sam books drift and found out he was going back to valkyrie for a few months to shoot the film. and a little bit after that they announced the oscar nominations. sam wasn't expecting it, and in fact, neither was his management team. but somehow one of the nominations was for him. it was flattering to be recognized for your acting. the oscars were what every actor aspired to be nominated for. he knew the odds were against him, and he was fine with that. he'd never been to the oscars before. even when his parents were nominated he watched it on tv with his siblings. he just wanted to have a good time, socialize with important people in hollywood and then party at one of the after parties. in the end, this was opening up more opportunities for new projects in the future for him, and really, that was all that mattered, he didn't want to poof off the face of the earth.
and then, as if it was fate, his two favorite ladies were in front of him. carly and her daughter lily. it was actually a very simple relationship on the surface. carly was his best friend. they met in 2009 and really had been friends since. but from sam's point of view, this was the most complicated relationship ever. you see, the thing was, sam was in love with carly. she was beautiful, she was successful, and she was kind. but, they were just friends. friends that did everything together. friends that even lived together for a little bit in new york, strolled the streets together, and attended events and award shows together. they were the subject of many tabloids. they were the infamous "are they or aren't they" duo that sadly, sam shot down rumors that they were just friends, even though he wanted to say otherwise. and with carly, brought lily, who was her daughter. she was four now, and sam had known the little girl since she wasn't even able to talk. and well, sam even loved her, too. he always loved kids, and lily was such a big part of carly's life and so, lily was going to be too. he knew he wasn't her dad, but sam really did spoil her rotten. when he was in england shooting scenes for captain america he sent out two tickets for carly and lily to visit him. sometimes his schedule could get hectic, but he wanted them to be with him. he dropped the hints, but she most not have noticed. maybe being in valkyrie now was a good thing. maybe soemthing was supposed to happen.
his smiled the moment he saw them. lily sprinted from where she was standing next to carly to his open arms. he crouched down a bit so he could scoop her up. "hey, princess. i've missed you," he said and kissed her on the cheek. lily's hands attached themselves around his neck as he started to notice people staring. carly came up to him and hugged him. with his free arm he gave her the best hug he could. she kissed him on the cheek and he couldn't help but smile. he definitely had missed her. "new movie. filming here in valkyrie. looks like you're stuck with me again. unless, you're only here visiting?" he asked. i guess he never really did think that maybe carly would go back to new york soon. "please. keep my company." he said, motioning to the empty seat across from him. as he sat down, he put lily down on his knee. the waiter that took his order came back and asked if they wanted anything. "get whatever you want. it's on me." lily looked at him and said, "i'm thirsty." sam looked back up at the waiter. "you got apple juice or something? we'll have that for her." the waiter smiled politely and walked away. he didn't pay much attention to what was going on around them, he was paying attention only to carly and lily. he bounced his leg slightly, balancing lily. "so how has it been being back? i know you told me it was nice here, but you never said anything about the people being here so friendly." since everyone was used to the manners (or lack thereof) in the los angeles and new york city area.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(http://i51.tinypic.com/290r8gj.png); width: 457px; padding-top: 30; padding-bottom: 30; -moz-border-radius: 35 35 35 35; -webkit-border-radius: 35 35 35 35;]hi » WE’RE UNDEFINED. carly's life had pretty much never been normal, ever. if you asked her to try and play the role of a normal person she'd probably screw up in some way because she simply didn't know what defined normal. people tended to describe normal as some ho-hum easy life where you pretty much had the same experiences as the rest of the world before you settled into a routine that would encompass your life, not to mention your soul, for pretty much it's entirety. carly hadn't ever been so fond of the idea of slipping into the role of some ordinary, uninteresting person because she simply did not live a life like that. not even since birth had carly lived like a normal child would and she hadn't grown up into being a normal adult either.
it all started with carly's grandfather's death. the man had been the focal point of the sutton family and he'd been the glue that kept everyone together not to mention he'd been the wallet that chrles and emilia had leaned on when they were going to school. his death had put the whole family in financial ruin. neither charles or emilia could afford to go to college in order to make their dreams a reality so they were forced to settle for jobs that they were good at, jobs they were comfortable with, but certainly not the kind of jobs they imagined themselves working long term. it was the blue collar, downgraded version of the luxurious life they would have rather lived.
instead of becoming an architect as he'd always dreamed he would be, charles got a job with a local contracting firm as a construction worker. he was forced to drop out of his last year or so of college because he simply could not afford to attend after he and the rest of his family learned about the financial ruin his father had forced them into. it was all because he and emilia were youngest. all of the other sutton children were older. they'd had their chance to go to college and make a name for themselves so they'd already been on their way to making themselves a permanent wealthy staple in the community and in other cities worldwide. charles and emilia had depended on the suttons because they'd promised to make sure they had a solid footing in the world, but of course no one plans for death to come and rip your dreams from you.
emilia had been a simple girl from a moderately stable middle class home. she had no ability to provide for her family as the suttons had promised to do and so when everything had been alright. instead of finishing up school and becoming a fashion icon the way she'd always dreamed of doing, emilia had been forced to take the only job she could with the skills she had. so she got her first job working as a tailor and that was pretty much where she stayed. emilia had her sowing skills and she had the creativity to go about making a name for herself had she had the chance to showcase her ideas but that never came. instead she worked her fingers to the bone, working on other people's clothes for pretty much all of carly's life.
they had always done the best that they could with the situation that they were in. though neither charles nor emilia had ever been looking for a handout, the people of keizer certainly hadn't looked to be good friends to them. just as the town had turned on carly over a decade after the death of her grandfather, the people had turned on charles and emilia too. no one wanted to even sponsor charles, to take him under their wing and make sure that he got those last few classes necessary. had they done so charles would have been some firm's partner and their life wouldn't have been nearly as difficult as it had been. the saddest part about all of that past work in school was the fact that charles couldn't just go to college for those last few classes and be done with it. credits had a life span. there was a point in which technology overcame the past or whatnot and the classes that you took just no longer applied. that was the case for charles. there was so much more computer technology and all that than he was used to and as such in order to become an architect like he'd always wanted to be he would have to go to college for the full term all over again.
there was nothing about any of the past or any of the conditions now that was normal and carly had grown up with that. she'd grown up knowing that if she didn't take every opportunity while it was still there that history told her it wouldn't be available to her again. knowing that carly had made a point to take her risks to try and get to those rewards she worked so damn hard for. that was what had lead her to this place. after so long and after such a strange beginning, carly was now doing something that no one had expected she would do. no one thought she'd be famous and she was sure that everyone in keizer was kicking themselves now that she was a famous, super wealthy individual. the people from that town were about as material as you could get. if they couldn't beat you in the rumor mill they would beat you in material possessions. that was just the mentality of the small town carly refused to acknowledged.
that was one of the main reasons she considered valkyrie her home town. she would have rather been born here. she hated keizer because of the entire environment that came from that small town and it was something she didn't plan on acknowledging ever. as far as she was concerned she came from valkyrie, she hailed from valkryie, and that would never change. it was why she was so prone to staying in valkyrie now that she was here. just looking around the streets you could tell that people didn't look over their shoulder nearly as much to see if people were talking about them. it was just a much more relaxed atmosphere. the city was big enough to not have that small town mentality but small enough to not be completely engulfed by corporations and whatnot. it was the perfect fit in carly's mind at least.
she wasn't quite sure just how much it fit in with other people which was probably why she was so shocked to have run into sam lockhart just on a random street. that...and the fact that the last time she'd seen him in new york and he'd seemed pretty damn settled there. maybe she just hadn't expected to see anyone from that life in a smaller town like this. unless they were at some childhood home the people in her same circles usually stuck to the big cities. they just liked the familiarity and the...smog. still carly couldn't say that she didn't like seeing sam here. it was really, really nice and she knew that lily was going to be in hog heaven even if he was only here for a few days.
she did have to admit that the ability that sam had to be so good with lily just tugged at her heartstrings. she absolutely adored anyone who fell head over heels for lily and anyone she regarded so closely. sam was definitely the first in line of the list of people lily adored. she didn't call him daddy for nothing. sam had been the most father like figure in her life and carly really appreciated that. lily had a lot of men in her life who would have fulfilled that father role for her but none better than sam. he'd gone so far is to move in with them to their apartment just so she could have that familial setting to come home to after preschool and whatnot. it was beautiful and if sam wasn't her best friend...she definitely could have fallen in love with him for that reason and that reason alone.
"you are? that's awesome babe. i'm so happy for you." |
she said with a big smile as she headed to her chair and settled down. "visiting? no this place is definitely home now. i left to make a career for myself and now that i'm back...i just can't see myself leaving." carly said with a little shrug as her eyes fell to lily. the four year old was all smiles as she leaned her head on sam's shoulder, just the happiest little kid you could imagine. "you sure?" carly taunted him with a chuckle as the waiter gave her a moment to look at the menu. "blt for me please, and a kids chicken tenders for the munchkin." she handed the waiter the menu with a smile, chuckling as he handed her a piece of paper and a pen. you wouldn't mind would you? "of course not, but only if you can keep people at bay at least until we leave. deal?" she said as she signed the paper and handed it back. you got it miss sutton. this was her home town after all. if people didn't know the home grown celebrity then they were severely out of the loop. she turned her attention back to same with a smirk. "it's just like i left it, only a little more like a jigsaw puzzle than when i saw it last. some streets are still hard to walk down and everything. it's hard seeing a place you love so dismantled but the death toll was worse. i was so lucky." she shook her head as she sucked in a deep breath. she really had lucked out with all things considered. her parent's house had for lack of a better world toppled and she was lucky that all that had happened was that her father had broken an arm and her mother had a few scratches. "but that's beside the point. i'm so glad you're here!" she chuckled as sam mentioned people in valkyrie being so friendly...if only he knew. "why do you think i love it here so much. this place is laid back and welcoming. i just love it. but you, tell me about this movie and all that. i didn't expect to see you in these parts." [/div] 1,761, outfit, TAG: SAMLY, UGH SORRY, CRAP. [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: dddddd; border: #ff6633 solid 8px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]WHEN YOU'RE ALL THAT I THINK ABOUT ALL THAT I DREAM ABOUT The Lyrics: 'goodnight moon' go radio The Outfit: here Tagged carly The Notes this is short. sorry.
--- THIS WAS WHAT SAM LIKED. whenever he had a tough day on set, or was overall having a rather shitty day, it was always when he went out to dinner with carly and lily, or played a game, or even just went back to the apartment to just be in each other's company, it always put a smile on sam's face. the past month was really hard not seeing them. mainly because he joked proposed to her, and then there was the 'american dance' season finale she danced at that sam went with lily, got nice seats, and the camera caught carly mouthing 'i love you' to lily, but it looked like to him, and the camera got it. it was just confusion on his part, of course. and then the earthquake happened and sam was still having to do other obligations while carly took off to valkyrie. sam just didn't really know what to say, he felt awkward about it. but running into them today was probably fate. someone up there was throwing him a bone. sam definitely was going to run with it.
sam cocked his head to the side when carly asked if it was ok he pay for lunch. "i'm pretty sure you and lil won't break the bank," he said with a chuckle as carly ordered for her and lily to the waiter. then the waiter asked carly for an autograph. he smiled, it was cute. he knew carly and he was always asked that question when they were out and about, but it was the hometown thing that sam was kind of jealous of. his hometown was los angeles. so you can see la didn't give that hometown feel like valkyrie did. since sam was a part of a hollywood business family, he really didn't know how it felt to go from a normal person living your life to finding success. as long as sam had been living he grew up around words like manager, academy awards, and 'steven spielberg is on the line.' for his father of course, but he was six when he went to his first hollywood movie premiere for his dad. he had grown used to pictures of him and his dad getting pictures taken at a few lakers games. not to mention, sam got the role on days of our lives because his parents were close to one of the casting directors. though every role after that was him going to auditions, sam just never knew how hard it was for some actors in hollywood. he guessed it really was true about who you knew in the business.
not that every movie he auditioned for he got chosen. he struck out many times for different film and tv roles. he took every rejection as a door that was opening for a new film. he got a pass on the reboot scream 4 but he ended up landing the social network instead, and look how well it worked out for him in the end? oscar nomination. which also brought him to thinking that maybe he wasn't going to go solo to the awards show. he could bring carly. he looked up as she told him that home was home though she hated seeing it like this. "yeah, the damage is unbelievable. i know i was never here before the quake, but no one deserves this," he said. even though main street was pretty much clear from debris and destruction, you can tell that it wasn't like that a month ago. "i'm glad you're ok," he added in. because he didn't know what he would do without her. her or lily.
"the movie? yeah. it's a surfing movie. but not lame? i read the script and really liked the story. about two brothers in the 70s modernizing the surf scene. the director really liked the beach in valkyrie so here i am," he smiled and shrugged, "it's a kind of movie i haven't done before. thought i would give it a try." he bounced lily on his knee. "and you guys will visit me on set when you're not busy?" he looked back up at carly. "speaking of busy. you got anything going on in a couple of sundays?" he stopped with lily for a moment, completely serious. might as well ask her, right? they could have a great time. what's the worse she could say, no? well... yeah. though he'd love to take his sister like he did for the globes, he wanted to switch it up a bit. call him a pot stirrer, but it had been awhile since sam and carly were seen together. though, as he looked around, he could see that people were soon going to see that they were "together" again. how would it look when they showed up at the oscars together? "how would... you like to go to the oscars with me. i got a plus one and i want to take you. it could be fun. we could walk the carpet, meet brad and angelina, have some drinks...?"

but after having won american dance, carly really didn't know what to do with herself. she had handled red carpet interviews just fine while she had been a contestant on the show but she never had expected the show to go over as well as it had and certainly hadn't expected to win. she didn't know the kind of demand she would have after the show. all of a sudden people were digging into her personal life and finding out that she had a child. all of a sudden she was being approached to star in movie roles and documentaries. all of a sudden her face was plastered on tabloids as people tried to figure out who lily's father was, what her story was, and allegations were made left and right about false stories that were retracted the minute carly's agent made a few phone calls. it was ridiculous. if it hadn't been for sam stepping in and really showing her how to handle things, carly wasn't sure where she would have ended up. it was possible that she would have rather just faded into the background again rather than facing what appeared to be newer, bigger bullies all over again. instead he'd kind of taken her under her wing. he'd taught her how to not give too much away in interviews and how best to approach hostile paparazzi. he taught her how best to keep people who either didn't want to be, people who she didn't want to be, or fakers looking to use her out of the spotlight. not to mention the effect he'd had on lily. she'd taken to him right off the bat and he'd genuinely seemed to care about the now four year old as well. carly attributed a lot of successes to his mentorship and friendship.
for one, sam was never asked to be a father figure. he'd just kind of assumed the role. carly had been hesitant to it at first, naturally, because she really didn't know how long a friendship with him was going to last and her future after american dance was a little hazy. the last thing she'd ever wanted to do was have some man in her life that her daughter got attached to who would be a no show in a few months time. there was always that what if in hollywood. it always seemed so glamorous and luxurious but what a lot of people didn't know was that the fame created a lot of competition and loneliness that just really took a toll on a person. you were away from family a lot or they struggled because you brought them along to different places. it was nearly impossible to have a normal life when you were scrutinized all the time and there were certain things you weren't allowed to do because you had to take preventative measures in order to be safe. it was hard to raise a small child in that and carly had known that coming into this life. she had always been appreciative of sam but for the first few months she really hadn't known whether or not he would have remained in their lives. she was thankful though that he had. he'd been the best of influences to both of them and carly couldn't have asked for a better friend in this lifestyle.
"weeeell as long as you're sure then." |
carly said with a mocking smile. this was a small cafe in valkyrie, not the ritz, so it wasn't like she was buying a boatload of caviar but carly still had a knack for wanting to establish her independence. she'd had to rely on too many people in her life and she didn't like feeling like she couldn't do that anymore. it was only a lunch of course but carly wasn't the type to let people fawn over her and give her things that she could just as easily go out and buy. for instance whenever she got a swag bag from an event with plenty of high quality rare stuff she usually didn't keep any of it. she might keep one or two things but anything she didn't she sold for money or gave away and anything from that went to a good cause. she couldn't tell you how many times she'd gotten thank you cards from kids in the new york hospitals that had gotten the toys and stuff she'd gotten from her swag bags. she just loved knowing that she was doing the right thing. that was pretty much the whole reasoning for her even coming home in the first place. "i got here after everything so there wasn't much cause for worry." she said with a smile before looking up and locking eyes with him. "but thanks." she nodded as sam started discussing his movie. it sounded good enough. she was sure it would be amazing if it was good enough for his tastes. sam wasn't the type to set his eyes on something sub par so that meant it had to be worth it. "i'm sure it's fantastic. i think we all know it'll be ten times better with you in it." carly said as lily tuned into the conversation and nodded her head vigorously. "mhm. mommy's right." she looked up wide eyed as sam mentioned going to the set, her gaze shooting to carly who could only smile and nod her head in agreement. "i don't see why not." she furrowed her brow at sam's question, scouring her mind to about that point in time. "no i don't think i have anything going on why? she asked as she waited for sam to continue. once he did her jaw dropped. "really? me?" she said with a growing smile. "holy...i'd love to." [/div]

THIS TEMPLATE WAS MADE BY WILMETTA OF CAUTION.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: dddddd; border: #ff6633 solid 8px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]WHEN YOU'RE ALL THAT I THINK ABOUT ALL THAT I DREAM ABOUT The Lyrics: 'goodnight moon' go radio The Outfit: here Tagged carly The Notes this is short. sorry.
--- SAM WAS ALWAYS THE HAPPY-GO-LUCKY ACTOR network correspondents liked to interview, the actor that took time to talk to fans, and the actor that didn't seem like a snobby young adult. sam liked to joke and be playful during interviews, he liked playing innocent pranks on sets, and he liked to ham it up on the red carpet for premieres. oddly enough, he was never really a party boy. he was never caught leaving the viper room at three in the morning. there were never stories of him getting in fights, or getting kicked out of clubs. for not having his start on a disney channel show or movie, sam lockhart had a pretty good image in the public eye. let's not forget to mention, for being a child star, he never went to rehab. it was pretty well known that sam was one of the good ones. not trying to boast himself up, but he'd rather it be him who had met carly on american dance than some other actors he knew that were sam's age. he had always been used to the probing and the poking. your personal life somehow becoming news. he did his best to show carly the ropes, the good friend that didn't want to see the big bad hollywood completely destroy. sam had seen that happen before, and he didn't wish that on anyone.
and here sam was, probably someone who had everything at his fingertips and could probably get anything he wanted if he really wanted to, and the one thing he did want was sitting right in front of him. close enough to touch, but so far away. sam had fallen into a role of the best friend. the one that was there, the one that she could lean on. not that he didn't like it, but he remembered when he flat out told carly that they were friends. he guessed he then had made his bed, so might as well, go lie in it. he knew those words were now a mistake because did he want more with their relationship? well, yes. her and lily were two people that had grown to be like his family over the few years they had known each other. sam didn't even know when he realized he was in love with his best friend. the sharing an apartment bit in new york probably was a big factor. seeing each other everyday, hanging out, having meals together, when neither of them were working, it was a routine that he had become accustom to. sam had always been instantly attracted to her when he was the special guest judge. the friends thing came naturally. the tabloids insinuating a relationship didn't push him in that direction. maybe it was the apartment, the visits on set, the walking around new york, and lily taking so well to him. it all sort of rolled into bottled up feelings.
the shocked look on carly's face when sam asked her to the oscar's showed him that she wasn't expecting it. "well, yeah you. i mean, lily was my first choice, but it'll be wayyyy past your bed time," sam said and smiled down at lily before kissing her on the cheek. "i just had to settle with her mom," sam rolled his eyes, being over dramatic, but breaking into a smile immediately afterwards. "nah, i'm joking. but, for real, i know i'm probably not going to win, so at least i have someone there i can have fun with. besides, we'll still get good seats." sam knew how award shows worked. they kept the big award's nominees closer to the front of the stage while some of the other awards fell further and further back from the front. lucky for him, being nominated for best supporting actor landed him towards the front. sam already knew when he would tell his mother that he was taking carly, she would be rather excited. his mom always did like carly, and often questioned sam why he never asked her out. he just kept telling her that they were just really good friends. he tried to leave it at that, but mother always knew best, right? she never pushed it though, he just assumed she was just keeping it to herself. then there was gabrielle, his publicist, who wouldn't be excited about fighting off the rumors because showing up with carly at the oscar's no less, was bound to start the rumors. not to mention the questions some of the interviewers were to ask while they were on the red carpet.
the waiter came and distributed their orders and refilled their drinks. he asked if they needed anything else and sam just shook his head and said thanks and the waiter left. he grabbed the ketchup bottle from the center of the table and first squirted some in lily's basket before putting it in his own. "so," sam started, "what is up otherwise? seeing anyone yet?" sam sort of dropped that bit in there. could you blame him though? he wanted to know. was he taking some other guy's girl to the oscar's? did they care? from what sam could gather, fate put them back in valkyrie. he could be looking at this as a second chance. he could try and get with carly. he could tell her how he really felt. maybe things could be different this time around. the oscar's could be the start of it. falling back into them going everywhere and always seen together. sam missed it.

sam of course had a slight in with this business but it was pretty much a necessity in a world such as this. carly was one of those lucky few. she'd been skyrocketed to fame because she had the talent to back it up though making it as a dancer in this world was far different from making it as an actor. there seemed to be a whole hell of a lot more aspiring actors and actresses out there than their seemed to be dance opportunities and american dance had really been the boost carly needed. the show had not only given her a great starting point with the prize winnings, the guaranteed tour dates, as well as a built in fan base that came along with everyone who had watched and voted for her to win on the show. that had been the best part. since then when she went to auditions she was running into choreographers that she'd met either through the show or through choreographers that had been on the show. she'd been approached to do fitness advertisements and what not. basically it had been her springboard into this life. she'd been one of those cinderella stories you didn't hear much about though people didn't care so much about the dance world or her talent anymore. not nearly as much as they cared about the rumors or the idea that carly and sam were dating. it was kind of sad almost that their talents were overshadowed by their rumored romances. but that was the way this life was. the fan base didn't tend to want to live through you because you were talented and because you got good deals or you made great movies. they tended to only care about you if they felt they could live vicariously through you and that meant that following famous would-be romances was more important than say, seeing if they were touring with a famous recording artist or something so they could see you performing live.
but hey. in a world like this you could either accept that that was why you really became famous, or remained relevant, or you could try to ignore it or push it aside and fade into the background. in all reality carly didn't really care about the fame portion of things other than the fact that it lead to more connections and more opportunities. that was what this business was all about. one success was great but a string of successes were even better right? a career didn't mean much if it just ended with one dance competition or one hit blockbuster. a successful career was one that had the ability to last you a lifetime right? carly knew that she couldn't dance forever but that wasn't the point. she would dance until there wasn't much else out there she could do other than starting a dance studio and molding the talents of new dancers out there. but barring a serious injury that was a long ways away. she didn't like thinking about that anyways. dancing just meant too much to her to think that at some point she would be leaving it behind or putting it aside. it wasn't like she'd be giving up on it completely but not going up on a stage and expressing your emotions through movement was like cutting her knees out from under her. she would just hope that when the time came that she had to progress from dancer to choreographer or something along those lines that the transition would be a little easier. one could only hope though. like the way her and sam's relationship had transitioned so far in such a short time. he'd gone from acquaintance to a surrogate father to her child in nearly no time. that alone hadn't been something carly had ever been open to a few years back and look at how things had changed because her perspective had changed. there was always room for it, yeah. dancing was just hard for her to give up on is all.
she really hadn't expected him to invite her to the oscars. carly had always watched it on television and she'd always tried to make a point of watching the movies that were showcased but she'd never thought she'd actually be going. the oscars were for serious movies unlike though action packed super hero flicks that were good during the summer or whatnot. not to mention that it was an awards show for actors and she was a dancer. it had never even crossed her mind that she would ever even go to the oscars, let alone going with sam. she knew he'd gotten the nod from the academy but wasn't that the kind of thing you took family or significant others to? still to be even considered made carly smile. "oh well if that's the case then i'll just have to go and enjoy it enough for the both of us. right lilybug?" |
carly said as she looked down at the four year old who just looked back at her mother and smiled. god you had to love that kid. there was just no other way about it. "now don't you go doing that. i'm sure there's a great chance you could win. but regardless i would love to be there." she had a tenancy to stop conversation when other people came around so she politely smiled when the waiter stopped by, dropping off their food and bowing out. she looked over at sam taking care of lily's plate. god if they weren't friends she would be in love with him. the easiest way to her heart was through lily's and it meant everything to her that sam was so good with her daughter. "well i wouldn't call it seeing." she said with a shrug. there wasn't a definition for what she and jamie were, if they were even anything. they were confusing. "i don't really don't know what to call it. either way, he's kept me safe so i guess that matters." she said as she broke off a piece of bacon and popped it into her mouth. "you? you've been without dating rumors and a four year old for a few months. there's got to be someone right?" [/div]

THIS TEMPLATE WAS MADE BY WILMETTA OF CAUTION. --- AS HE LOOKED AROUND VALKYRIE, he could sort of see himself settling down in a place like this. eventually. right now, he almost had to live in either new york and los angeles. come to think of it, he pretty much lived equal times in both cities over three thousand miles apart. but when you are as young as he was and still very new to the industry compared to most, it was better if he was more accessible. he knew a lot of celebrities like brad and angelina had houses in france, and lived in london, or lived down south here in the united states. then again, his parents were very successful in their own careers, though they had lived no where else but los angeles since they moved there to make a name for themselves. but you never know, this oscar nomination was catapulting him, according to his agent and manager. they said he can be taking on more serious roles, which was what sam wanted to do. teen genred movies was what had made him famous, but he didn't want to stay in there forever and fall victim to getting typecast in every future movie he was going to be in. that was why sam took this new movie drift. he never had done something like that, so he just wanted to do it, and hopefully find success with that.
he knew he just got here, but already he didn't want to leave. ninety percent of that reason because carly was now here. it was almost sad how much he cared for both her and lily. he now could see that he had compeltely taken their time in new york for granted. sam had known that leaving in new york wouldn't last forever, but he wished it had lasted longer. he probably would have maybe done things differently. eh, well... no, he probably would have done it the same and still be hanging his head in embarassement. well, it made him human. it was the unintentionally mixed signals he had been receiving up until he joked that they should just be getting married. the 'american dance' season finale was what did it. when carly looked over at lily and him after she danced and said 'i love you.' sam and whichever camera panned to him for the nation to see, was assuming she said it to him. instead, she was saying it to lily. secretly, he wished that she was saying it to him. sam doomed it all anyway when he said they were friends.
sam was over the moon that carly wanted to come with him. since he and carly became friends, he had never been invited to the oscars personally. he had gone because of his parents, but it's different when you are personally invited, than when your parents are pretty much invited every year and they bring their family. but now, it was the big time, he was invited, he could bring a guest, and he'd be sitting close to the front of the stage since he was up for one of the bigger awards. maybe, if he was lucky, he'd be made fun of in the opening monologue. he could take a joke. call him cheesy, but walking the red carpet with carly seemed better than the show. he was a super animated guy, so the interviews, the fans, it was all going to be great for the best night in hollywood, and now, he basically had his best friend coming with him. sam shrugged, "i'm a rookie compared to the veterens i'm with. if i'm not expecting to win, so when i don't, i won't be disappointed," sam said after the waiter left. but, it was the truth, there were a lot more seasoned actor's in his category. his agent even said, it will probably help his career if he doesn't win. he said that that is the case with a lot of the other young hollywood actors that find themselves nominated for an academy award, it helps their career if they don't win. "but thanks for being my date. i missed going places with you."
sam grew quiet when carly answered his question. she wouldn't call it seeing? then what would it be called? "oh," he managed to say as he took a sip of his drink. so... there was another guy. seeing him or not, there was something there that made her think. sam was disappointed, he wasn't going to lie to himself. he was hoping that if they were both going to be in valkyrie here, maybe he could do what he was too nervous to do in new york. sam did frown when she said he was keeping her safe. "safe? i didn't know you were in some sort of trouble." if he had known that, well.. he didn't know what kind of trouble she was in, but sam would like to think that he could help her if she was in some sort of trouble. carly then directed the question back at him. he laughed and shrugged. "surprisingly, not. well, besides the rumors that either a.) you left me, b.) i left you, or c.) the father figure role has been too much for me. all of which are not true," sam said and kissed lily on top of her head. he looked though around them and people were still probably looking at them. it was safe to say that the break-up rumors would be done and the 'getting back together' rumors would be picking back up. "but who's this guy, what is he like?"

carly was the settling type. despite all her moaning and groaning about relationships and whether or not she wanted to have them, she was still the settling type. the way carly saw it was that she didn't need a man to make a comfortable home. and who would in her situation? carly was pretty good mother, or at least she'd like to think that she was. she didn't pawn her child off on her parents to go out partying 'til two o'clock in the morning every night. sure she needed a free night here or there but what parent didn't? carly hadn't ever heard of parents not taking a little time for themselves on occasion. that was what babysitters were for was it not? the only people she'd ever seen gone the longest without were her own parents but even then they'd always liked the occasional night out with a cheap picnic under the stars. after all during the days when all four kids had needed babysitting, the suttons were still in a world of financial instability. still they could still go out on very little change and have a good time. charles and emilia made fun on a dime an art form. carly had never felt deprived as a child and she hoped with everything that she had that lily would not come to feel the same way in the future.
carly was the first to admit that when it came to romance or relationships that she was beyond faulty. she was bias from the nuclear bomb that had been her first relationship and she'd never really recovered since then. but the thing that worried her the most was her outlook toward men rubbing off on lily. the last thing carly ever wanted was for her daughter to never give love a chance simply because it hadn't worked out for her and had scared her out of anything further. because it was true, aside from the fact that he was superbly dangerous and the fact that he was equally shaky about the foundation they had with one another, carly still couldn't say she was ready to dive into any relationship with jamie. she'd always been that way since her pregnancy screw up. she'd always been hesitant and by the time she'd thought she was ready for something or had gotten over the past enough to try something, no one was there to...take the bait. that was a terrible way of describing that when she wanted a relationship no one was available to her. those times were rare. oftentimes carly was more likely to talk herself out of a date rather than to go on a date and she really hadn't been concerned with it for a number of years. it was only now that the need or desire was getting more and more prevalent.
there were a lot of factors to look in to as well. carly had more than just herself to think about here. anyone she chose would have to not only be good for herself but would have to be good for lily. she couldn't be stupid like she would have liked to be and just go out with some guy who only wanted to have fun. even at twenty years old she needed to settle down and look for a guy who would be willing to take on more than just about any guy would want to take on. that was nearly impossible to find in guys her age. who wanted to surrender their youth to play the role of father to a kid who wasn't even theirs? the pickings were slim which was part of the reason why carly rarely tried anymore. instead she'd found best friends who took on that role of father figure simply because they loved both carly and lily but had no real responsibilities to them. that was a good enough start, she assumed. at least lily didn't have to go without male influences in her life and at least she hadn't reached that age where she would take to asking about where her father was. cain archer hadn't been in lily's life ever and carly didn't necessarily want to change that seeing as how he hadn't wanted either of them in the first place. it was safe to assume that cain would never want to be a father which was beneficial to carly because she never wanted to deal with him again. the man had made a train wreck of her life and inviting him back into it was like begging for trouble, trouble that carly wanted no part in.
sam on the other hand was one of those good influences. if she'd had a pick of the men she knew now that she could have wished was lily's real father, sam would have been at the top of the list. he'd taken her on as his own and he was carly's best friend, what more could a girl ask for. sam had gone above and beyond so much so as to even move in to be a stronger force in lily's life. he was the kind of guy carly wanted to keep around not only for herself but for her daughter which made him all the more important in her life. jamie, well, carly wasn't sure if the same could be said. there was a connection there that she felt so strongly it scared her but at the same time he was dangerous to both herself and lily, he had yet to even really meet lily, and he wasn't someone carly could see as father material. she wasn't knocking the guy in any sense, she just didn't know him even now as she told sam he might just be in her life. she was so unsure about everything in regards to that...relationship, she just didn't know what to really do about it. "hey it's not a problem at all. you know i'd be there to support you any day of the week." |
she said with a smile as she pulled a hunk of bacon out of her sandwich and popped it into her mouth before she leaned over and broke up lily's chicken fingers to help them cool faster. "there you go munchkin, yeah a lot of stuff happened that i didn't expect, i can't really tell you out in public with so many people listening in." she said as she looked over her shoulder and the couples around the different tables leaned back into upright positions, making carly chuckle.
"well i'm glad that last bit's not true. i can't tell you how much i appreciate you being in lily's life the way you have been." she looked down at lily with a smile before sam's question perked her up once again. "so far he's not really anyone. his name's jamie. he's a bit of a brooder. he's nowhere near as gifted with kids as you are and he's only met lily once as a 'friend'. i don't know. i mean i have to look out for more than just myself now and i don't know if he's right for me, but i have been hanging out with him." she gave a slight shrug as she finally said everything she was concerned about aloud. "i don't know if anything will come of it really, it could just be a passing fancy, but...jeez i'm not sure." there was a whole lot of confusing there which made it all the more difficult to vocalize. --- SINCE BECOMING A FULL TIME ACTOR, sam had never really used status of his celebrity to get what he wanted. at twenty two he was still very young in hollywood, but he'd be an idiot by not acknowledging his 'heartthrob' status. when he was still a teenager, yeah he had a lot of fun being photographed places, being invited to nightclub events, and still being a teenager in a grown-up world. he never took advantage of the fact that he was a young, attractive bachelor in hollywood. after all, he did have a surfboard at his new york place that proved he was a 'hottie.' with all this added attention you'd think he would be swooning the girls, taking models to his premiers, and hanging out with girls at after parties, but he was never like that. the only girl he wanted to swoon had dubbed him her best friend. that... sucked. but now, carly was telling him about this new guy that he never even knew about. what was so special about this... brooder? this was the one time where sam wanted to use his status to let carly know, she'd never have to worry. he could get lily whatever she wanted. he could give carly security, which was maybe what she needed if she was in some sort of trouble.
he smiled when she told him that she appreciated that he was in lily's life. sam reached across the table and held her hand. "carly, i will always be here for you and lils. if you ever need anything you can always come to me." ha, beat that mr. mystery guy. sam squeezed her hand before letting go. sam had never really felt so competitive when trying to win someone's affections. maybe because he had never dealt with someone else before. but dammit, if people were taking pictures and this was going to be the next story on e! news or perez hilton, then he wanted to let this other guy know who sam was and he wasn't going to bow out so easily. not this time. even when sam and carly lived together in new york, they never had to deal with 'other people.' mainly because the gossip mag was so wrapped up in the relationship that wasn't between him and carly, and sam would never bring some girl back to the apartment he shared with the girl he really had his heart set on being with. and now that carly was going to be going to be his date to the oscars? he wanted to show her everything he had that this other guy didn't.
carly already told him that sam was better with lily than the other guy, jamie, was. sam loved lily. the way he treated lily was completely genuine and he never faked liking lily for carly's sake. he admired carly for taking on the role of a teen mother and becoming as successful as she was at her age. sam had no idea how he would have been able to do what she did. being a mother while finishing high school and becoming successful after graduation was someone to look up to. and even if sam was only twenty two, he did like how he was some sort of father figure to lily. he didn't know much about lily's real father. carly never really had gone into specifics. he was ok with that. it wasn't his place to prod. carly was expressing some doubts about this jamie guy. "well, right. got to be looking out for your family. i mean, if he's the reason you might be in some sort of trouble, maybe you should rethink that. you know, for lily's sake," he told her, even though he was sure she was already probably thinking of everything. him echoing her thoughts just might help her make the right decision.
several more minutes passed and the waiter came by with the check. sam gave the waiter his card and continued conversations with carly. the crowd of people didn't exactly die down, but it wasn't an obvious crowding either. "i'll give you a ride?" he asked carly as the waiter came back with the receipt and sam added a generous tip on the tip line. "where are you guys staying?" sam asked and got up, pulling lily up with him and plopped her back down around his shoulders. she laughed and sam was getting smiles out of carly. it was like old times when they were in new york and they'd roam through the streets shopping and hanging out before either of them would have to go back to work, or practice, or anything else that they had to do that day. those were the days when they were attached at the hip when they were together and sam just stood hopelessly by wishing that they were more than best friends. it was worse being in the public eye and seeing himself next to her in pictures or in interviews together. he could see his want and admiration towards carly, but everyone else failed to see that. they were just blinded by the fact that they were secretly dating. huh, he wished.

though carly hadn't known sam for very long, that didn't mean that she felt in a similar fashion. when carly looked at him, when she smiled with him, and when she saw him with lily it was honestly like he'd been there forever. sam didn't feel like someone she'd met only a short while ago. he didn't feel like someone she should be the least bit hesitant of around her child. he was the perfect man. carly honestly couldn't have asked for a better person to want to step in and take up the role as father figure in the life of a child he hardly had even known at the time. carly couldn't blame him though. even as her mother carly had a hard time sometimes when it came to disciplining lily or even just telling her no. looking into those big, blue-green eyes that looked so much like her father's carly could hardly even utter the words no but she knew for a fact that no one would benefit had lily always gotten her way. carly tried desperately to be a good mother to lily. there had been so much time to make up for and so many things that she'd missed that she felt she had to compensate for, but carly couldn't help all that had happened in the past. it hadn't been her fault that her mother had taken away her daughter and passed her off to a family of responsible adults who could take care of her, and at least her mother had done just that. carly would probably never have forgiven emilia if lily had ended up in foster care or with a family who didn't take care of her. carly had been fortunate to find a lively, bouncing baby girl when she'd gone to check out the family who had adopted her little girl. hell they had been nice enough people to let her into their home and, at some point later, take lily back. carly had never expected that. she had always hoped and dreamed that had she ever found lily again that she would get to see her and maybe even get to touch her or say hello to her. in her wildest dreams she had always gotten her back or had never been separated from her in the first place. to see that four years after having given birth and gone through the ordeal of having her ripped from her hands that lily was back in her life and didn't seem to have some sort of bad reaction to all the change, it was all incredible. the past few years with her had been like a dream only this time it was one she was living.
seeing how happy she was while they were here with sam was just like her two favorite dreams being meshed together into one. because while carly's first dream had always been to get her daughter back and be happy, one of her others was that she could find someone who could not only love carly for who and what she was, but someone who could accept the fact that being with carly meant that there was a child involved and really had no problem with that. there weren't many people her age who would volunteer for something like the father's role that sam had inserted himself into. most men would look at a toddler or a small child and would only see the bad. they would see those nights where they would have to call a babysitter for some freedom or that the finances for the baby came before their miscellaneous wants and desires. men tended to look at children at just about any point in their lives and in some way see their freedom running screaming for the back door. even men who had worked with their wives for years trying to have a baby would at some point take into consideration the sacrifices that would have to be made for the sake of the child. if you weren't attached to said child in any way, either through marriage or simply through biology, then carly couldn't fathom why a man would volunteer to step in. granted she had no complaints. she knew that sam was beyond the definition of a good man and honestly if he'd shown some interest back in new york they never would have had this issue in the first place. carly would have simply been with him and nothing else would ever matter. that of course wasn't the case and sam had only been interested in being a father figure for lily because he was a friend to carly. made sense. he was around enough when lily had been growing up that she'd just kind of slipped one day and called him daddy and since that moment it had pretty much stuck. of course lily was a little better about calling him that now because with more maturity came more of an understanding of the situation between sam and her mother, but lily still pretty much considered the man like a foster father or a stand in. he was better than all the rest and pretty much everyone knew this already. carly knew he was the best because she'd witnessed it firsthand. no one was a better non-father than samuel lockhart.
she knew as he spoke that he really did make a good point, as much as she didn't like talking about it. she didn't know what this thing with jamie was or even if it was worth being called a thing in the first place. right now he was an aquaintance who she really liked spending time with but, as sam had mentioned, that really wasn't enough. it wasn't worth getting hurt over or putting her family in danger. someone just needed to tell her brain that, or her body, whichever one it was making the decisions that he needed to stick around. carly didn't know why. the attraction was just there and so far there had been no fighting it and no hiding from it. "i know. there's a part of me that just wants to be the slightest bit selfish and be around him but i know it's not safe. if i was smart i'd cut all ties." she shrugged a bit. through her mouth was talking sense the rest of her wasn't as much in agreement and that was obvious in her body language. she fidgeted just as she did with the idea. it wasn't something she would decide on in a moment. she just needed time to mull it over, as difficult as that may prove to be. they had a brief moment of silence as the waiter came around and carly debated on throwing in a portion of her cash for the meal but she knew it was a futile battle. when sam set his mind to something he did it and that usually meant that no matter how kind the gesture she made, she would always get turned down when she offered help. instead she cleaned lily up as he paid and suddenly they were all ready to go. "yeah that would be great sam, thank you." she said as she stood, watching sam lift her to his shoulders as they headed out of the cafe. "we're staying at the inferno. my parent's place kind of turned to rubble in the earthquake so i put them up so the place can be rebuilt. it's the least i owe them for everything they did for me. she rested her hand on his arm as they walked along, heading in whichever direction sam pointed them in.
it wasn't long before they had ended up back at the inferno and were stepping off of the elevator, carly's room key ready in her hand as lily took off toward the room. "quiet missy. other people live here too." she reminded lily who waited patiently for carly to open up the room so she could take sam by the hand and drag him around to see everything from new york that they had brought back to valkyrie. carly liked the little hotel room. it was like a little house packed into smaller quarters. there was a tiny wash room, bathroom, kitchenette, and living room as well as the two beds in the bedroom off to the side that carly and her daughter shared. it was nice and it was big enough for the two of them. heck carly wasn't even sure she wanted to leave the inferno when her parent's place was finished. "this is our cosy little place and missy it's nap time for you." she said as she finally got lily's attention who hopped up off the couch and headed back into the bedroom. "wanna tuck her in?" carly asked as she extended a hand to sam, inviting him to join her. once up carly headed into the bedroom and settled lily in to the tiny twin sized bed that was actually three times her size. it was the biggest bed the four year old had yet to use and she loved it. "night lilybug." she said as she tucked the sheets around her daughter and gave her a kiss on the forehead, stepping back so sam could have his turn and leaning against the doorjam to watch their interaction and smile. once he was done and out of the room carly closed the door to sequester lily and make sure that she got some shut eye. "you don't have to leave right away if you don't want to." she said just above a whisper as the bedroom doors latched. "i think all we had is disney movies but i'm sure we can find something to do."

--- ATTACHMENT WAS A WEIRD THING TO HAVE, especially when you lived a fast-paced lifestyle that both of them did. sam had friends, of course he did, but when it came to the tv shows or the movies he did and spent as much time with co-stars as he did people sometimes grew apart. there was the filming where he spent long hours with directors, actors, and other crew members. then there was the break between the wrap-up of filming and the promotion of the movie. sam had been on a lot of sets over the past ten years. he had met a lot of people, and probably only a handful he ended up being close friends with and others where if they happened to be going to the same event, smile for the cameras and play catch-up. the film industry was very tricky, maybe because he felt like people were always trying to get ahead. he had "friends" where he would open up an issue of a tabloid that said this and that about him. some rumors, of course, but others had been true and the information was given by a "trusted source" or "close friend." he knew sometimes, he got screwed, but he tried to not let it get to him. his parents always taught him to not let it get to him and being so much in the public eye, he would learn who his true friends were. but, one person he really completely trusted was carly. ever since he first met her on american dance he knew she was just different. she wasn't fake, or attention-starved. she is probably the most beautiful, genuine, and honest person he had ever met. sam wondered if he would have eventually met her in the hollywood or new york circuit, but he wouldn't have been optimistic about it. it had really just been the opportunity of having a movie to promote, being on covers of magazines, and the dance show to just happen to having a challenge about acting and telling a story. so, sam had been an ideal and current choice for a guest judging spot. it was wild to think how everything fell into place.
then it was getting her number and hanging out. you'd think it sounded like the early stages of dating, but no, they were just hanging out, sam getting to know lily, and really? just getting to know each other. they had more in common than he thought. it wasn't until they had been seen in public that the rumors started blowing up the blogs and magazines. a few pictures snapped at outdoor cafes or shopping on rodeo. little things like that the got attention. and then, people just jumped on it. the winner of american dance and one of hollywood's younger bachelors. of course sam saw the appeal, he felt like one of the fans, wanting something to happen between the two, and then it just never did. but even though he missed out on that opportunity back then, he didn't want to this time around. once again, their paths were crossing again in a lucky way. the movie he signed on for was filming here in valkyrie and she was back in valkyrie for the time being. sam wasn't sure who was working the fates up there, but he felt like he was given a sign. it was his second opportunity to make things the way he wanted to have them the first time around. so, carly might have someone on the side? it didn't seem like that much of a commitment if she was unsure about it. sam didn't go after women that were involved with someone else, but even carly said it, she wasn't sure about this guy. and? he sounded dangerous. and sam was mr. likeable. to him it was no contest, and even though he was a little worried about it, he just had to push those thoughts away and focus on what he was going to do to let carly see he could be more than a friend. he just hoped that the years of being best buds wouldn't obscure her thoughts on him.
when they headed out of the cafe, carly mentioned that she was staying in the inferno with lily. he looked down at her when she touched his arm. he smirked and cocked his head. "well, what do you know. i'm staying at the inferno as well." the place was massive, it beat some hotels that were in los angeles, but he wouldn't have guessed she'd be staying there as well. "looks like you'll be stuck with me even longer," he joked. it was funny, considering that they had shared an apartment together in new york. besides carly, there was always one other person he could never lie to. his mother. and when he started to hang out with carly a lot, his mother knew immediately that sam viewed carly more as a friend. like any mother, she was a little skeptical of the relationship, (more or less,) between them. but when sam had carly and lily over for dinner with his family, his parents fell in love with her as well. even though sam wasn't in high school or a child anymore, his parents really liked that he was spending so much time with someone that was so grounded.
the three got into sam's car and drove the short distance back to the inferno. he dropped the suv with the valet, tipped him and they all went inside. sam followed carly, though he was getting tugged along by lily. they went up the elevator and down the hall where, once carly opened the door, lily had to show him every room in the large suite. it was sort of like his. he didn't have two bed in his bedroom, but when you had the money, you got basically an apartment in hotels like this. carly announced that it was time for lily to take her nap. "yes, definitely," sam told carly when she asked if sam wanted to tuck her in. lily ran to the bed and got underneath the covers. sam made sure he pulled the covers up and closely underneath her chin to where she giggled. and he promised her that he would see her later. carly closed the door behind them and said to him, "you don't have to leave right away if you don't want to." his spirits lifted. "good. because i don't want to leave yet." he smiled at her and rubbed his hands together as he made his way over to her dvd player. "let's see what lily was watching last." he pressed the button open and saw that it was the little mermaid. he looked over to carly who was sitting down on the couch. "the little mermaid? my favorite," he said, turning the tv on and pressing play. sam grabbed the remote and settled next to carly on the couch. even if technically he was trying to get with her, they were always comfortable with each other, so wrapping his arm around her as they watched tv, but why was he slightly hesitant to do that now? sam did it anyway, pulled his arm around her shoulder as the movie started. he probably saw this movie a thousand times, all those times with lily. "you know? i really miss living with you and lily in new york. i know we've both gotten busy these past few months, but, i missed you a lot, carly."

carly had to wonder if people thought that what she had with sam was strange. it hadn't ever seemed strange to her but maybe that was because she had seen him as not only a good friend but as a roommate with benefits. not many men would want to step into the role of father if there was nothing in it for them in the end but sam had just stepped in like it was nothing. carly hadn't ever slept with him, hell she hadn't even kissed him except on the cheek and still he'd stayed with her. with them. there had been nothing in it for him other than gossip, speculation, and hanging out with them and that seemed to have been enough for him. how it was, carly would never know. it almost didn't make sense. he could have gone out into the world and found a woman who was perfect for him. a woman he could marry who wanted to give him little girls of his own was the natural choice right? but sam had chosen carly and lily and he'd wanted to be there for them in ways that even carly hadn't expected. he didn't just want to deal with them when things were picture perfect and ideal. he didn't want to just be around when things were all smiles and playtime. sam had volunteered to be there for everything and be there he was. when lily had fallen down and scratched up her knee sam was the first one to rush to her aid, give kisses, and clean it up. when she got sick and was throwing up sam stayed up and cradled her in the bathroom, giving her support as she cried and vomited into the toilet. he was there for the parts that weren't that pretty. and of course he was there to experience the god parts as well. sam seemed to be as into raising lily and carly had been he'd been through the bad only to see the good and how much of a reward it was to witness her smile. of course she was a mother. she was allowed to go gaga over things like this but sam? sam wasn't lily's father and yet it seemed so natural for him to just be involved.
it wasn't fair of carly to allow him to insert himself into her world like that but how could she refuse? he was such a good man that she couldn't seem to tell him no when he wanted to do something good for her or her daughter. because lily was more important than anything else in this world and sam seemed to appreciate it. it wasn't about getting to lily so he could get in her pants. he'd never seemed to want that. he just wanted to be someone trustworthy that both carly and lily could rely on on that much really was the case. she loved that he was there when lily was being tucked in. in had been so long since he'd been there to do so that carly had felt for a long time that she was depriving lily by moving her out to valkyrie. this place had been her home. it was where things started to go uphill from her rock bottom moment in keizer and it was where she'd made a majority of her friends. valkyrie was where things had turned around for carly and if it could happen here for her then carly would like to hope that things could be just as wonderful, if not more so for her daughter growing up here. carly was a big star and she was in demand almost anywhere so there was lots of flying in her line of work to begin with. so did it really matter just where the plane was taking off if she ended up exactly where people needed her to? carly didn't think so. she had pretty much made up her mind the moment that she'd come back that valkyrie was likely going to be her place of rest for a while. carly only had to wonder about the crime life in valkyrie. hand to god she'd never realized how much crime there was in this town until she'd gotten back to it. being...somewhat involved with a guy in the mix didn't help.
after tucking lily in carly headed into the living room, noticing that sam had left in the dvd from earlier. lily certainly did love her disney movies which was fine to carly. she would much rather her watch movies about talking animals, princesses, or nostalgic old people before watching any movie that included blood, guts, and dismemberment. lily was only four but carly would admit that she wanted to keep her little girl as innocent as possible for as long as possible. she didn't want her growing up too fast and she certainly wanted to point that out to her later on as she began growing up under the pressures of her peers and whatnot. carly didn't want to be a grandmother at thirty something. she didn't want lily to have to go through her mistakes either so teaching her right off the bat what was right and what was wrong was important. ingraining wholesome messages into her head was much easier to do when there was an animated film that taught it for you. she slid onto the couch next to sam, snaking her arms around him as she leaned into him, getting her cuddle on because it had been so long since she'd done so. jamie certainly wasn't the cuddling type. then again carly also didn't know what the hell was happening on that front. all she knew was that she was now here with her best friend and everything now had felt as right as it had back in new york. this was the way things were supposed to be. so she tucked herself under his arm, smiling as she did so as the movie began. "i missed you too sam. and lily missed you like crazy. i can't tell you how many times she asked when you were coming down or when we were going back. i know i took her away from you suddenly and i'm sorry. that really wasn't fair to you seeing as how you've been a pretty big father figure in her life. hell she even calls you daddy." carly swallowed hard thinking about how much lily had asked about it and the few tears she'd shed when she'd realized what it meant. "i never should have done that to either of you." she said as she looked up at him, her brow furrowed.

--- sam knew that he was a father figure for lily. he didn't complain. there were probably a dozen other guys that if they were in his position, they couldn't handle it. and at only twenty two, he was fine with the added responsibilities. though recently, he hadn't been around as much as he wanted to be. work got crazy with promotions for the social network and the award buzz that surrounded it. sam was actually surprise it had gotten as much attention as it was. we he signed on to the project, he knew it was about the creators of facebook, but it became more mature than a teenage movie. when he got the nomination for the golden globe, he was caught so off guard. he had been nominated for the mtv movie awards, so he wasn't expecting much more than that. he was a presenter at the crictic's choice awards and those were the first awards shows of the year, and he just thought since he wasn't nominated for that, he was done and he could focus on the next movie. but then, the golden globe nominations were released and he was on the ballot. it had been a surprise. his parents had been so proud of him. sam had never been nominated for one of the "big awards" in hollywood. and maybe he was secretly really wanting to win. but, he didn't, which was fine. he wasn't sour about it. he was up against some seasoned veterans. now that he was nominated for the oscar, he was mostly just proud he accomplished it. he wasn't really expecting it, but he wasn't going into the night hoping he'd win. his manager even said just being nominated was going to be opening numerous doors for bigger projects with bigger names. sam was excited for that, because that was what he was striving for since he began acting. you wanted to "make it big." sam already felt like he had, but now, he was just becoming more mature in his choices of projects to be in. his agent told him that he couldn't do high school stuff anymore. sure, sam could probably pass as a high schooler if he wanted to with the right wardrobe, but he already sailed that ship. he knew drift wasn't a teen role, so he was taking the steps to become more of a respected actor. filming hadn't even started yet and his agent was already sending scripts to his hotel room just so he could "look them over" and see if any "caught his interest." sam didn't want to be a one movie a year actor, so he appreicated that his agent cared so much about his career. sam didn't complain, he had a team handling his career that he enjoyed. they weren't mean, didn't make him do anything he didn't want to do, didn't take advantage of him, and they were... nice. a hard characteristic to find in hollywood.
but somehow, between all the craziness, sam managed to be a little bit of lily's father. he celebrated birthdays with her, walked her to preschool in new york on mornings that carly had to go into work early, he probably spoiled lily a bit too much, but what the point was money if he couldn't share it? lily had gone from calling him sammy to daddy and that was a shock to him. only because lily knew he was just carly's friend that was with them all the time. all the time. sam knew they were very young, but sam didn't mind. he liked that he could be that guy that was in lily's life that she could rely on. he might be head over heels for carly, but he felt like if he didn't act on his feelings soon, he would lose his chance forever. and he still wanted to be something in lily's life. be there when she got older. sam truly wanted everything, even if carly didn't want the same things as he did, but could he make her see a different side of him? one that was more than just a friend? even if he passed the proposal off as a joke, he would say that it logically did make sense. sam thought... that they could be a family.
carly wrapped her arms around him as she settled next to him on the couch. it was like old times. just hanging out waiting for work to disrupt them. his arm crossed over her shoulder. he leaned farther back into the couch, getting comfortable. carly told him that she was sorry she took lily away from him. he shook his head and squeezed her shoulder. "don't be sorry. work called us at an... awkward moment," he started saying, referencing the proposal. "but, we're both here now. you're happy, i'm happy, lily's happy. i mean, i'll be here for awhile. it can be like old times, you know?" for being able to do interviews and be in front of the public eye, he still couldn't find the right words with carly. they sat in silence for part of the movie. it was kind of nice to just relax, even if it was a disney movie. at some point though, they were just pictures on the screen because sam started looking down at carly and attempt to start the conversation about them. "so, you got me thinking," he told her. "i think there's a better guy out there for you than this criminal," sam was going to hit the ground running with this one. he shifted himself on the couch that made carly look up at him. "and maybe this is a complete long shot for you, but i think i can be that guy for you carly." his hand reached out and cupped the side of her cheek, a gesture he had done thousands of time with her already, but right now, it just felt more intimate. "i'll fight for you, carly. i will."
